I have used this headlamp several times now while walking/jogging with my dog on icy roads and trails after dark. I love it! It's much brighter than my cheaper Black Diamond headlamps and the rear blinking light gives me great confidence that I won't be hit by a car or a cyclist. The strap that goes over the head can be removed and the weight distribution with the battery in the rear is well designed and it is very comfortable to wear (I don't even really feel it on my head anymore). If you have a son or daughter who likes to run, cycle or walk after dark, please buy this for them! I live in Boulder CO where so many students walk around town and cross streets in dark clothes with no reflective gear and they may as well be invisible. There's nothing more frightening than being surprised by an "invisible" pedestrian or cyclist in the dark while driving. I was able to purchase this on sale but TBH it's worth every penny if you have to pay full price. It's the cheapest insurance policy you'll ever buy!

Heads up: if you buy this headlamp, know there is a piece of plastic in the lithium battery compartment that will prevent it from charging. This is not in the instructions anywhere and I returned 2 "defective" headlamps to Backcountry and was about to return the 3d one when I decided to call Black Diamond directly. The customer service rep knew right away what the problem was and acknowledged it should be in the instructions. I will add more to this review once my new headlamp is fully charged and I finally get to use it! Stay safe and happy holidays to everyone! 2021 and the vaccines are right around the corner--YAYYYY!!!

Does this come with it's own rechargeable battery, or do individual AAA batteries need to be installed?

Hi David! This headlamp comes with a rechargeable battery, but it uses "duel fuel" meaning it can run off of the Black Diamond 1800 rechargeable battery OR take AAA batteries.
