Highway to anywhere.

The Route 95 Ski is Black Diamond's daily backcountry driver that stays strong for seasons and rides well in most conditions. It shares the same dimensions as Black Diamond's Helio 95 Ski, except BD switched out the carbon for fiberglass laminates to bring the price down and maintain torsional rigidity. Although it checks in at a backcountry-friendly weight of six pounds per pair, the Route still weighs about a pound more than the Helio so it's not quite as light as its carbon counterpart.

A mid-fat 95mm waist transitions from firm snow to soft with equal performance. The rockered tip helps you set the skin track when the snow's deep, and it plays with the tail rocker to help you enjoy the deeps on the downhill. BD also added some camber underfoot to hold an edge when you're cruising down firm snow. Black Diamond's flat-top construction employs durable sidewalls that are easy to tune season after season.

Great all around ski, does it all!

The Route 95's are my first experience with an AT setup. I've been on tele skis since 1990. So far I've skinned multiple times, toured, skied the area, and gone on a hut trip. The skis have met and exceeded all my expectations. They are so much fun in the powder and the trees! They also ski like I am on rails on the hard packed. I am very happy with the choice I made.

Great backcountry ski!

Purchased these skis in the hopes of using them for most of my backcountry trips in all conditions. So far I have not been disappointed. You can definitely find lighter skis, but the Route 95s have been stable and fun in both fresh powder and variable snow/crusts. The tails feel a bit softer than on other skis, as others have noted, but I have appreciated them not grabbing in poor conditions. The bases seem quite durable as well. A few times I thought I had put some more serious scratches into them going over the early season snowpack, but there are only some very light marks.

A Hidden Gem

The Route 95 is the ultimate sleeper ski - it performs well in ALL conditions, is durable, easy to tour with and features immaculate construction. I first picked up a pair of Route 95's for a trip to Antarctica where I wanted something with a bit more dampening (wood core), but the more I skied on them, the more I kept picking them out as my regular Go To ski. The wood core not only makes the ski more durable as far as bouncing over early season logs, rocks and dirt, but it also plows through mixed snow conditions much more predictably than an ultra light ski. I've got over 200 days on my Route 95's and each time I think they are done, I give them a wax & tune and they fire right back up. Great skis!

Great one-quiver ski!

Bought two pairs this season (after an unfortunate rock shot to the first) as I was happy enough the first time around. Haven't tested in deep pow (and probably wouldn't be my first choice for only deep pow skiing). Good in variable backcountry conditions, used at the resort (no chatter on groomers)... have had some snow gather on topsheets on warmer days, but I've never found a ski that completely solves that issue.

Truly Impressed

I bought these skis in their 183cm length for the 2017/2018 season to replace an ultralight pair of touring skis (which I hated). I am a fairly aggressive skier, clocking in at 185lbs without any gear (so 200+ with an avi pack, etc). First impression: Cautiously Optimistic. These are well constructed, with a strong feeling topsheet and ptex base and nearly fully length sidewalls (tapered near the rockered tip), which I felt were a must after losing confidence in cap constructions. They are quite stiff feeling and consistent through the entirety of the ski. With a fair amount of rocker in the tip and a subdued amount of rise in the flat tail, I was cautiously optimistic that the skis would handle themselves well in a number of conditions. Plus, they looked good! I learned pretty quickly while warming up at a resort that the skis reward a "neutral" stance, versus the aggressive forward lean I grew accustomed to on my old Volkl Mantras through this dry season. Pushing the skis too hard resulted in the back half of the ski washing out and the planks informing you (kindly) of their lack of appreciation. Once I learned how to ski them, though, these things really held their own. Surprisingly for such a light setup, by mid-afternoon I was bombing down mogul runs and arcing big turns down open runs at speeds I would never even consider in a backcountry environment. Second Impression: Surprised/Impressed. My first full-value trip was a multi-day hut near Copper Mountain, which delivered days of fresh snow and up to knee-deep+ powder (a surprise for this year). Given how light these skis are, and their friendly backcountry shape, they crush the skin track similar to how my ultralights did, even when breaking trail in deep snow. They are well balanced for kick-turns, and I appreciate the skin clip at the tail. To my surprise, despite these Routes only being 95 underfoot, they ski powder incredibly well. Somewhere between the waist width, the amount of subtle rocker in the tip, and what I found to be a truly impressive tail, they made me forget what a relatively small ski I was on in knee-deep conditions. With the right stance, I found the tails would pop me out enthusiastically for every turn, and achieved a great balance between pop and slarve-ability. In essence, they were fun. Like, really fun. Final Impression: Totally Impressed. Now that the season out here has turned (albeit early) toward spring mountaineering, I finally got to put these skis in the element I intended for them -“ long tours, spring snow, and steep couloirs! My wife and I made a pilgrimage to Rocky Mountain National Park to ski Dragon Tail Couloir over the weekend, and in true style, the snow was "œcharacter building" at best! A couple inches of fresh powder on top of a consolidated/icy variable base. To my surprise, these skis made those conditions FUN, and I was able to rocket both tight and larger-radius turns down the Tail. Being able to engage the edges on command and depend on the stiff sidewall construction was exactly what I wanted - confidence inspiring!

nice but brittle top sheets

I really like the stats on this ski. 183 length 95 underfoot and 7# is a really nice do it all ski. And this ski can do it all. It tours really well and is nimble on the skin track. I have them mounted with the radical 2.0's and have skied them at the resort no problem. They are very fun to ski. They carve reallllly well. I haven't skied them on a deep day yet but I'm sure they're fun. Because skiing powder is fun. I'm sure it's a durable ski... but the top sheet is very brittle. It gets knicks and chips very easily. This weird thing happens where the interface of the top sheet and sidewall peels like string cheese. They look pretty beat up after 20 days. It's disappointing considering the marketing claims on this series even though it's only cosmetic.

Good ski, scratch easily

Intermediate skier. Have used these on resort about 5 times but haven't had a chance in the backcountry yet. The skis feel great, strong and flexible, and hold an edge really well. Only complaint is that after my first day I noticed a scratch that caused the top layer to come off the ski a bit. I am guessing my skis crossed and cut this up. I sealed this with epoxy and that seems to be doing the job. In general, the tops of the skis scratch easily.
