Just add juice.

We've all been there—you finish setting up camp just before sundown and then turn on your headlamp to see it flicker its last bit of light as soon as you turn it on. Normally, you're out of luck if you didn't bring spare batteries; not so with the Black Diamond ReVolt Headlamp. It features AAA batteries that are rechargeable via USB, so you can charge it through your car output, solar panel, or laptop. You can even toss in some regular AAA batteries in a pinch.

Dial in the right amount and type of light for the task at hand with proximity, distance, strobe, red night-vision, and dimmer settings. An adjustable headband allows for hands-free illumination, and a tilt function gets you the right angle for seeing what's coming at you. The three-level power meter takes the guesswork out of how much juice you have left.

MAKE SURE YOU GET THE IPX8 VERSION

Buyer beware! The older version of this headlamp was only rated to IPX4 water resistance (splash protection rather than full submersion) and is woefully inadequate for hiking in prolonged wet conditions. I experienced rusting in the battery compartment and intermittent failure with the old version on a Long Trail hike in rainy fall conditions. Black Diamond has acknowledged this glaring design flaw with a "redesigned, now fully waterproof" IPX8 version, but there may still be inventory of the old model out there. Backcountry.com has two product listings, one for the old IPX4 version and one for the new IPX8 version. However, the product images on the website are backwards between the new and old version which leads me to think that Backcountry may not have their inventory correctly sorted on this one. If you order this headlamp, carefully inspect the fine print on the packaging when it arrives and MAKE SURE it says IPX8 raher than IPX4. If you get an IPX4 version I strongly suggest returning it for refund immediately.

Won't charge, brand new.

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

What a disappointment. I bought this light specifically so I could recharge it and not throw away alkaline batteries anymore. I have had it for less than a week and it already won't charge. I plug it in and it blinks red which according to the instructions means that something is wrong with the batteries. They are the new batteries that came with the light. I guess I will either be using alkaline or buying a new set of black diamond's special batteries. I'm sure there is a warranty and I'm sure that Backcountry will take care of it for me but it's a bummer that it doesn't just work the way it is supposed to.
