Why We Like The Recon Stretch Ski Shell

It's darn near impossible for ski companies to incorporate stretchy material into a ski shell that actually fends off winter's weather, but Black Diamond's Recon Stretch Ski Shell seems to keep snow out while we ride through the backcountry's deep powder.

Unlike most ski jackets, the Recon Stretch incorporates four-way stretch fabric into a waterproof, breathable membrane that shields you from snow whether you're skinning through snowfall or skiing through face shots. We love that there are ventilation zippers under each arm in case you get too warm, and a helmet-compatible hood and removable powder skirt to keep you covered in case you get too cold or wet.

Great shell

6’ 190. Medium. Bit tight in the arm pit. Not very stretchy through chest but great arm length and overall construction. Great color. The blue one. Really a great jacket and it’s going to get a lot of use.

Bomber jacket!

Excellent jacket for skiing! Love the durable stretch material that is also waterproof and breathable. Similar jackets sell for significantly more money. I would give this jacket 5 stars for quality construction, durability and roomy fit for layers. If I had to suggest one improvement, it would be to add 1 zippered pocket on the inside of the jacket rather than the 2 mesh unzipped pockets. While I also own the Pro version of this jacket for the coldest of winter ski days, this jacket is preferred by me for most skiing conditions.

Great shell!

Used in conjunction with matching pants, material does not any loud annoying sounds when it rubs against itself. I for reference am 5’11”, 195 lbs athletic build and the large was perfect. I was able to wear a waffle top base layer and arcteryx atom lt jacket underneath with room for an additional layer if required.

Clean and well made

This jacket is nice, clean, and well made. I had to order a LG to fit my shoulders/chest so the sleeves are a little long. Im 5'9" 190lb with wide chest and shoulders. Using the measurements in the fit guide were helpful to select LG over MED as well as the "fit" description.

Great jacket

Amazing all round ski jacket shell. I’m 5’10” 180 and a medium fits great through chest and arms. A little snug through the hips.

Too small

The recon stretch PRO medium fits me perfect. The regular (non pro) recon stretch in medium is noticeably smaller for some reason. I’m 5’10 170

Great jacket

Comfortable, quality material. The coldest I’ve worn this jacket was around 20F and it was warm and breathable. Never too warm while putting in effort on the catwalks and never got cold waiting in the lift.

Warm not wet

Performed great in the first wet “Sierra Cement” storm of the season. As expected it was breathable yet kept me dry!

Great shell

Keeps the moisture and wind out. I’m 5’10” 175lbs and the medium fits perfectly. Feels and moves right with everything from just a base layer on warmer days all the way to when I’ve needed some heavier layers on really cold days. The pocket layout is just right for me as well.

Great Multi-purpose Shell!

I've worn this jacket about 5 times, and I really like it. I wanted a Shell for use on the resort and for light Side-Country touring, and this fits the bill perfectly! I am 5'8" and 160 LBS, I bought a medium, and it is a bit loose, but will have room to carry skins and other essentials if I don't have my pack. I like the powder skirt, pit-zips and Helmet compatible hood. The jacket stretches a bit as well which is a nice mix between a soft shell and a hard shell. Overall I am very pleased.
