Momentum DS Harness

Black Diamond designed its Momentum Dual Speed Harness to keep you comfortable whether you're a beginner at the gym or an expert on a moderate multipitch. Its Dual Core Construction consists of two bands of webbing that split around the waist in order to allow maximum breathability and weight reduction without any pressure points. Black Diamond also slid OpenAir EVA foam padding and an abrasion-resistant mesh panel between the nylon shell to optimize the harness's comfort and durability. Two Forged Speed Adjust buckles have raised side rails that help prevent abrasions from the webbing, upturned baseplates that allow an easier lift for loosening, and a rear kick down on the top plates that eliminates any slippage while you climb.

The Momentum also features TrakFit slide adjusters that cinch across your legs securely and simply without the need of bulky buckles. You can either adjust or release the elastic rear riser for an ideal fit and optional drop-seat use. Four pressure-molded gear loops give you plenty of space for quickdraws and cams, and its haul loop is rated at 12 kN in order to ensure you can bring what you need on long climbs.

The best

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This harness is a perfect fit and really high quality. I like how you can always have additional support attached. These are totally the best harnesses.

Great for sport or trad

Second one i’ve owned... -Great gear loops -Double buckle is great if you need to layer up -Can’t beat this price for an all around harness

Way Comfortable, Super Adjustable

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I got this harness to replace a Petzl Corax I gave away to a double amputee young man who comes to my gym and joyfully belays anyone who asks him to. He said rental harnesses hurt his legs near the hips; and was delighted to have his own personally adjusted harness... I would say the Momentum DS compares favorably to the Corax, feels a little lighter perhaps. However, on my first time out today, the Momentum DS feels MUCH more comfortable in the legs than the Corax did. I am almost to the max in the thigh adjustments, but that just makes dialing them in easier = no changes needed = on and off in a breeze. And the double buckles on the waist band make centering the belay loop a no-brainer. All in all, completely satisfied and recommend highly. Obviously haven't used it enough yet to perhaps affix the final star. Update and Answer to Emily's Question: Added Star #5 = terrific, so glad I got it! I've now used it several times and the leg straps definitely are more comfortable than those of the Corax; I'd urge folks to consider spending the extra $10 to get this harness over the Corax. As for fit, I'm not going to reveal my waist size, because I am embarrassed; but the sizing chart is accurate and there's a TON of range in both the waist and leg adjustments!

Hey George, thanks for this review! Would you say it fits true to size, according to their size chart?

Adjustability

Familiarity:
I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

Bought this harness for my friends birthday. I personally have the normal BD Momentum and unsurprisingly this one has way more adjustability. If on the fence about sizing I would definitely go up rather than down. All of the quality that you would expect from Black Diamond.

Fits slightly small

Familiarity:
I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

Overall it is a fantastic harness. It is very easy to adjust the size, very comfortable, and is built extremely sturdy. My only complaint is the sizing chart is a little off. I was on the middle for needing a large or an XL. I bought the XL and it ended up being a snug fit. I feel super safe on the walls though, and I highly recommend it.

bought this harness as a gift.

A great beginner harness for people just getting into climbing. Able to take you from the gym to the crag. Doesn't have a ton of space for multipitch climbing but it is very comfortable and adjustable for it's user.

First Harness

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

This is the first harness I've owned and I have no complaints about it. The speed adjust buckles are easy to adjust, but feel very secure. Very comfortable over all and would definitely recommend.

Great for my 11yo crusher

I've had a hard time finding a harness that fit my 11yo son well - this one is perfect. The double buckle makes it so the waist can be snug and comfortable.

Very nice

Great harness. I always feel very secure using it, and the straps are easy to adjust all the way around.

Great All-Around Harness

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I have been using this harness for about a year now. It works great as a gym, single pitch sport or trad climbing harness. It's super comfortable so you can wear it all day. The dual buckle system makes it really adjustable so I imagine you would be able to wear this over a jacket while ice climbing.

from my son....age 11

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I Love my personal harness because: 1.its your personal harness ( no one uses it cause its mine) 2.it has a lot of padding on the leg strips 3.it has more safety and high quality 4. you have gear compartments to storage carabineers Having a personal harness means that I do not have to share it with another climber at the climbing center. I can be certain that it is clean, works properly and is completely safe. Safety is the most important issue in climbing. I have learned how to use a harness the correct way and how to attach myself to the rope system at the climbing center. I hope to learn how to belay my partner soon that will allow me to challenge myself even more. There are many techniques that I have yet to learn that I can then teach my Dad. I think he likes climbing too but because he weights so much I am afraid that the rope might break. Ha Ha…that is a joke..but seriously..I am afraid he might break something. A personal harness gives great energy and when I climb I have a lot of vigor

Ron, I am so excited to see such an honest review from your son! Please tell him thank you so much! We appreciate you taking the time to write it! Climb on!

Thanks Kayla for the feedback...your comments mean a lot to the little guy and serves to encourage him to ...climb on. Thanks again.

Great first harness

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I've been using it for 3 months and it's been working really well. It's my first harness so I cannot really compare it to other harnesses (although I've tried the BD Solution, which is more comfy and lighter than this one, but unfortunately it doesn't have my size). I use it in the gym, 3 times per week. So far I've been really happy about it!

Nice harness, but Makes my back hurt.

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

This harness looks and initially feels very nice. The wide adjustable range is impressive. While it does not feel uncomfortable while using it, my back hurts the day after using the harness eveytime I have worn it. There is something about the geometry that causes it to tweak my lower back. This has never happened to me in another harness in 23 years of climbing. I had to stop using it as a result.

Great Harness

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

This harness was exactly what I wanted. I am 6 feet, about 170 pounds, usually wear a 32 waist and the XS/M fits great. I would not have wanted to get the next size up as I would be afraid it would not tighten enough. Climb on!

Speed and Momentum

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

Durable and light, gear loops are great, extremely adjustable, metal buckles are a plus, just an all around excellent harness. Great for all types of climbing, and makes you wonder why people buy those silly sport-only harnesses. Had the standard momentum before, this one is slightly more comfortable and adjustable, but just as solid as the standard momentum.

Cant go wrong

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

This harness has all of the classic features of the ultra popular momentum harness with a couple of added features. One of the nice things about this harness is the ability to adjust the waist quickly and with a more customizable fit with the two slide adjusters. Another nice thing is having the slide adjusters on the leg loops. The plastic adjusters that come on many other harnesses can crack and break fairly easily, but these metal adjusters will not. With these metal adjusters, this harness is also well suited for high lining.

Great all around harness

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I've been using this harness for around a little over a year and its been with me through my first days of climbing and doing 5.4s in the gym to redpointing 5.12s. It has a great adjustment system so it can fit well with shorts on or thick pants and a down jacket. it feels well padded and i can hang, climb and fall in it for long stretches of time. Even though it's a pretty barebones beginner harness, I wouldn't hesitate to purchase another one.

Pretty much perfect

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

Fully adjustable as you gain fitness and shed a few pounds or for adding layers in the colder months. Perfect all-around harness. Like the gear loops far better than the Petzl Corax (has floppy loops) but they could be bigger.

Versatile Harness

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I spend a lot of my time climbing both indoors and outdoors. I usually climb outside about 3 times a week and indoor up to 5 times a week.(Weather dependent) This harness is great for a person who wants one harness that can do everything. It is comfortable enough to wear for long days on the wall or just for days spent at the crag. The dual buckle system makes the harness very comfortable. Gone are the days where your harness is rotated around your waist as you try to get it situated properly. With the dual buckles now the belay loops are always in the center of you body! I am 6'2 175lbs with 33in waist and wear the XS/M

Great gym harness

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I climb at the gym 3-4 times a week and outdoor sport climb 2-3 times a month. I've used this harness every time. PROS: Its light, durable, and very comfortable. The price is what drove me to get a new gym harness to play around with/have an extra for a buddy. It was very cheap but the quality is way above the price. Its perfect for they gym and beginner routes outdoors. I'd say its the best "first" harness for the noobies because of price to quality ratio. 10/10 for gym. CONS: After using it outdoors, I'd give it 8/10. Only because the top of the belt frayed a little after some hard falls. Nothing to damage the belt to the point its unsafe. Just cosmetic. It rained a little bit at the first pitch and it absorbed a little water and I felt the weight. But then again its not an alpine harness so that's expected. Overall: Great beginner/backup harness. I'll buy this again when its almost time to get a new one.

Im right on the fence when it comes to sizing, I have 30 in waist with 23 in legs, according to the chart either one should fit but Im not sure if I should opt for the xs/m or the L/XL, what do you think?

Josiah, For your waist and leg measurements I'd recommend the XS/M. Jared D. Expert Gearhead 801.736.4336 jdowns@backcountry.com
