    Refuse to compromise.

More often than not, the ascent is only half the battle, and when you’re met with technically demanding terrain and variable snow conditions after a harrowing climb, you need aggressive downhill performance you can depend on. Devour vertical feet on the ascent and descent with the voracious Helio 95 Ski—the mid-width offering from Black Diamond’s new, technically-focused ski mountaineering line. The pre-preg carbon fiber layup provides torsional stiffness and progressive, balanced flex that’s forgiving in soft snow, but can still stand up to hard pack. An endlessly versatile 95mm waist width is complemented with a medium turn radius that’s just as comfortable in tight couloirs as it is on sprawling, untouched powder fields.

The Helio's profile consists of a rockered tip, raised tail, and camber underfoot to give you a sense of levity in soft snow and reliable edge hold on boilerplate steeps. An ultralight engineered balsa flax wood core, titanal mounting plates, and ABS sidewalls keep the ski staggeringly light and strong so you can propel yourself to the most remote objectives with the least amount of drudgery in the skintrack. To simplify transitions and prevent wear and tear on the ski tail, the Helio features an ABS tail protector with integrated tab to secure skin clips.

    Lightweight and performs well

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I'm super happy with the Helio 95s. I've got a pair of Dynafit Radicals on them and it's been a super solid setup for touring all over the Wasatch as well as a couple hut trips in BC and Colorado. It floats in the powder when conditions are soft and handles crud and firm snow super well. It's lightweight on the uphill which is great, but doesn't feel like a flimsy touring ski.

    Great Lightweight and agressive ski!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I have to say I was not sure of the design of those skis at first. I'm an aggressive skier, who feels in control on stiff and stable skis. Most of the lightweight skis are not stiff enough for me, so I normally use freeride style skis with tech binding. For a ski mountaineering trip, I borrowed the Helio 95 from a friend. The objective was to ski steep lines around Mt. Katahdin. We had all sorts of strange weather from freezing rain to deep snow (25cm + of snow).

I have to say I was surprised at the first turn. The Helio 95 is stiff and responsive. You really feel the support of the skis all the way during the turn. Those skis can easily navigate through wind affected snow and icy conditions. It's not a deep snow ski, it's not the weapon of choice for the dump of the year, but it works well over fresh snow and soft spring corn.

Skiing Mt. Katahdin mean you have to make a 17 miles approach (the main reason why I borrowed those skis...). But the Helio95 are light enough to make it almost enjoyable. It's real backcountry skis, but with the capacity to ski like a great alpine ski.
