Helio 76 Ski

As the lightest, narrowest ski in Black Diamond's ski mountaineering-oriented lineup, the Helio 76 Ski is designed for fitness laps, long slogs, skimo races, or any mission where you need to move quickly and efficiently. The 76-millimeter waist cuts out those extra ounces you'll find from a wider ski, resulting in a nimble ride on the descents without holding you back when you're crushing the ascents. An early rise tip and tail make the Helio 76 able to handle some softer snow should you find any, but its svelte profile leans more towards firm conditions.

At the heart of the Helio is an ultralight engineered balsa flax wood core, which is responsible for the ski's impressively low weight and gives it a fun, responsive personality. Pair this with the carbon fiber layup and ABS sidewalls for improved torsional stiffness, dampness, and a better edge hold, and you have a smooth, precise ride all the way down. Black Diamond equipped the ski with integrated skin clip tabs, too, to keep your skins securely in place and prevent unnecessary wear from skin clips.

Fast, Light, and Versatile Mountaineering Ski

Took them out on there maiden voyage early Spring day with a great hard pack base with about 6 inches of powder on top. Skinned up the mountain, excellent ski to skin up, light in weight due being 76 to 106 mm. The ride down is everything Black Diamond advises. Excellent ski for late season skiing. For what I can tell it will make a good downhill ski on groom slips as well.

Solid ski

I have been riding these little skis for a couple of weeks in the Wasatch and I am still learning about them. So far I am very impressed by how well they ski for their size and weight. It is certainly not the lightest ski available, but that may be a blessing in many cases, if good riding in different conditions is important to you. I have tried them on crusts, groomers and dense powder. They ski well, but it may take more skill and effort on some surfaces. I will not take them out after a sizable storm, though. Their greatest advantage is how light they are and how fast you can move uphill on them. It takes getting use to them but it is worth it.

Pleasantly surprised

Purchased the Helio 76 half way through the 18/19 season to replace my previous lightweight set up! I expected it to be light, fast, and responsive, however I didn’t expect it to ski so well... and not just for a touring ski!! Although purchased for stacking vert, checking out some further out zones, and a few local skimo events. I found myself skiing it way more this spring than I thought I would, even over my go-to helio 105. On hard pack and baked snow the grip is excellent, the ski balances stiffness and liveliness very well. It is responsive, easy to turn and smear, and surprisingly stable underfoot. The only thing the Helio 76 does not excel at is float in deep snow - not surprising given its dimensions - but it is still capable of tackling softer conditions a few days after a storm or those dust on crust days! Although it may not be the lightest ski out there I’m glad it has a full wood core with a carbon-fibre layer and rubber to produce a high-performance, low-weight ski, it inspires confidence unlike other skis in this category. Overall I can’t imagine another ski this light skiing this good.... well done BD!!
