Insanely difficult to assemble and cut

This review is about the assembly and trimming process only as I have yet to use them. I've never written a review about anything but I've never been so frustrated by something that should be so easy. I recently assembled and trimmed a pair of BCA skins so thought I'd have no problem with these. I watched 2 different youtube videos that were easy to follow. My issue is with having to affix the skin into the bracket and then screw 3 screws through the skin and the bracket. Screwing the screws in was insanely difficult. I ended up stripping the screw so badly I couldn't get it in our out. Then the head of the screw broke off and left half the pointed end sticking out and I can't break it off! See picture. Something that should have taken me 20 minutes took me much longer and I didn't complete it! What is worse is now I have to pay someone for something I should have been able to do myself. I didn't get to go skiing and can't until they come back from the shop.

Still like 'em - but need a new tool BD

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

My husband got these and he says: I heard BD changed their skin glue and people dont like it as much. So far I am still very happy with these skins. I have a pair of these that are about 4 seasons old, bought new skis and got a new pair. I have only used them on 4 tours so far, so cannot speak to the glue break down but so far so good. While I am very happy with the skins function, I used a G3 skin cutter to shape these. 4* because BD is still making us cut our skins like its 1999.

Great choice!

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

One of my all time favorite skins. This things work great and hold up really well over time. The glue is top notch and holds up well after many uses/seasons unlike some other brands. Also these are very easy to trim to get you on the hill without tearing your hair out.

How do they perform with respect to traction on steep uphill climbs?

Love these!

I picked up a pair of these to replace some old skins and I just wish I'd done it sooner! These gave great friction and pack down much smaller than the full nylon version.

As good as advertised

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I bought the Guidelite to use for the Grand Traverse as I wanted some skins that glided a bit better. Having trained on them for a number of adventures they work as advertised. They were easy to fit and trim, they glide really well and so far only one slip back on a skin track. Good product

like a chairlift but with beer!

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

Boy howdy! I'll tell you one thing, in this modern day and age with heated chair seats and high-speed detachable quads., there certainly remains some magic with human powered ski recreation. Perhaps a large portion of that magic has to do with the freedom of open containers, lack of lift-lines, and no screaming children to push over in the snow. As every magician needs his or her favorite magicians top-hat, you as a snow magician will need your snow top-hat. Or in this case, the Black Diamond Glidelite Mohair Mix Climbing skins. These bad mama jama's will flatten all your approaches and make you the king of the mountain. They go up, they go down. they go up, they go down.... and of course, they go up, and.... then they go down. Stick it to those chumps who paid for a lift pass, shake your fist at the bourgeoisie and their helicopters. Stand up proud and earn those summit beers and earn those turns.

Light packable traction

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I went from a really old pair of Ascension Nylon's to the Glidelite Mix and couldn't be happier. I was concerned about losing traction on the up, but have been plesantly surprised by how good of grip these provide. What really blew my mind was when I was able to fold them up and tuck them in my jacket. I never used to understand how friends could do this and I love the time savings this provides. The BD skin cutter works, but consider shelling out another few bucks for a G3 skin cutter and you'll forget about how cutting skins is a pain.

Awesome skins

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

Very packable and grip well. Have held up through 3 seasons of touring and are half way through their 4th. The glue is getting a a little gloppy but that is the only wear sign. Still work like a charm.

Great skins

I bought these for my girlfriend. They are a bit lighter than her old pair and the glue holds up for multiple runs.

Skin Cutting Tips

Right amount of glide

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I love these skins. They are easy to trim and easy to use. Measure twice, and cut once! It is really difficult to readjust the length once you have cut them, then break the screws out. You will have to cut the skins, then puncture new holes with a different small screw, then put the old screws back in through the new holes. The Grip is more than enough and the glide is Sweeeeeet. The mohair makes gliding a breeze. They are also so light. It is hard to tell that they are on the ski or in my pockets. Check out BD's video for cutting tips. https://youtu.be/6QuDebcSMco

Improper tip loops

Great quality skins. HOWEVER....Not sure why 140mm skins come with a tip loop that fits 85-105mm tip. Sucks to shell out another 20$ to get the right size.

Hey John, I too have the 140 mm skins and they have a feature that allows for you to adjust the loop size a little wider. I was able to widen mine out to fit my skis which have 141mm at the shovel width. I will say, I had a difficult time sliding off the adjustment cover though. Here is a good link that may help with any other questions on those. http://starthaus.com/wordpress/2014/10/22/how-to-fit-and-trim-black-diamond-ascension-nylon-sts-skins/

Great Touring Skins

Great skins for touring. Nice for gliding and the climb. I've found that trimming is a cinch too.

Tried and true

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I've hiked these all over the Wasatch and some of the Cascades. These skins are great. A great balance of weight and durability. I've never had an issue with them not sticking to my ski or the snow. Be sure to keep them tucked in your jacket when descending if you know you're going back up. Warmer skins are easier to put back on your cold skis.

The Standard by Which I Compare All Skin

Familiarity:
I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

These skins are the best! I have been using some version of these skins since the beginning. They are light, grip, glide and stick to our ski base like, well, glue. The new tip attachment is much easier to install than the old fold over one.

Loving These

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

Just a repeat of what has been said but I love these! They glide very well and also have excellent grip. The glue seems to do very well in a range of temps. Very easy to trim and set up. These are by far my favorite skins i have used so far.

How to trim your skins

Here is the video BD released on how to trim your skins and make sure you get the correct size for your skis. These are designed to be a single length to be trimmed to fit most ski lengths instead of coming in different lengths like some other skin brands. The dimensions listed in the size drop down are by width.

Grippy

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

These skins are as gippy as any I've tried. I've yet to have any trouble on steep skin tracks. Of course, the packability, weight, and glide are awesome. I wouldn't go back to the bulky nylon ones.

Slidey - AND GRIPPY

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

These skins, woooooweeee they glide like nobody's business! What a hoot! You can look like Slo-Mo at Venice Beach! BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!!! They are grippy too! Despite the mohair mix, these skins do their job, especially if you maximize surface area under your skis. Depending on the profile of your skis, these may be hard to cut neatly, but apart from that, they are wonderful nylon/mohair skins!
