Black Diamond Fritschi Vipec EVO 12 Bindings

The Fritschi Vipec Evo 12 is the ultimate weapon of choice for tackling big objectives and ripping them to shreds on the way down. The heel-locking lever gives you the confidence and security you need to crush the lines you just battled your way up, while a front-lateral release provides reliable release values in both ski and walk mode for added safety when you're skiing or get caught in a slide while skinning. Weighing in at just over a pound per binding, the Vipec EVOs keep it light on the skin track, while a three-level heel riser accommodates changing slope angles as you skin across flat meadows, mellow aprons, and steep headwalls.

Not functioning correctly

The toe does not open when pressing the toe lever down making it very difficult to transition. Have to either use another ski pole or somehow bend down to push each side of the toe pins down to release the toe of the shoe. Works fine once foot is in / out of the boot but I would recommend a different binding if you’re in need of transitions in any sort of difficult location or terrain. I know it’s not the boot- tried it with a different boot as well.

Quality when it Counts

As always, Black Diamond delivers quality products. When purchasing gear that you are relying on to the extreme extent, they function at peak performance and endurance.

Best compromise

If you are looking at these, then you are probably struggling with the compromise between inbounds, backcountry, safety, and weight. These are smack dab in the center of the venn diagram. The heel is lighter and smoother in operation than the tecton model (another great choice). The toe piece releases when it needs to in a unique and confidence inspiring manner.

Skis great! Yours better

Breaking trail with fritschi toe pieces is a dream! The pivot point is further back and that makes all the difference. It is noticeably less effort. And when it’s time to head down, the lateral suspension in the tech toe means way less chatter feedback from the skis. They tour like tech bindings and feel lit resort bindings on the way down.
