First Light Insulated Jacket

Being cold zaps your energy quicker than you can say dawn patrol. Black Diamond designed the First Light Jacket for frigid alpine starts and teeth-chattering transitions, but you'll be rocking it on knife-edge ridges and cozy yurt trips too.

PrimaLoft Silver Active makes this BD's most breathable insulation option, dumping excess heat during high-output ascents. Light enough to please weight-conscious alpinists and compressible enough to fold into itself and clip to your harness, the First Light is a no-brainer to accompany you on your next big objective.

  • Lightweight insulation for big days in the mountains
  • Water-resistant fabric keeps you dry when the weather rolls in
  • PrimaLoft Silver Active breathes during high-output activities
  • Lightweight stretch fabric maintains a high range of motion
  • Stows in internal chest pocket and clips to your harness
  • Black Diamond has been developing high-quality climbing and ski gear since 1957

Awesome Jacket!

Familiarity:

I don't usually write reviews, but couldn't pass up the chance on this one. This jacket has quickly become my favorite. The fit was perfect for me - I'm 6'3" and 205lbs with long arms. It's extremely comfortable and lightweight. The highlight of this jacket is its warmth. I routinely wear this in sub-freezing temps with just a short sleeve shirt underneath and I'm perfectly warm outside for 10-15 mins at a time. Can't wait to take it climbing/hiking/camping. I think it will be great hanging out around camp on a chilly evening. I liked it so much, I bought it in 2 colors!

Arm holes too small

Familiarity:

Runs small

Im a completely average sized person, not buff whatsoever, the armholes are just too tight. If you wear a long sleeve under it or a hoodie, its very constricting. Sleeves are too long as well, thats usually the case but because of the unique cuff, unlike a patagonia that is tight around your wrist, this one allows the sleeve to hang down and get in the way of using my hands. Overall just a frustrating jacket because it looks great and is well constructed but the arms ruin it. Other then that its a good jacket.

Perfect Jacket

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Medium

I was very impressed with this jacket right off the bat. The fit was absolutely perfect for me. I'm 5'7" , 165 lbs and the medium was snug but not tight and not bulky at all. I like that the tail of this coat is a little longer because I wear it cycling and it covers when I'm hunched over. It's lightweight and fits in the pocket as described. The pocket even has a nice felt on one side if you needed to use it as a pillow in a pinch. As usual for BD, the construction is well thought out and doesn't have any flaws as far as I can tell. The green color is a little more muted than it appears on the website which was also a nice surprise. This jacket will not keep you warm on its own probably below about 30-40F degrees. It would however, be perfect for layering with a waterproof layer and a long sleeve or sweater. It has great mobility as well.

Just got this and really liking the function and form. The jacket fits great (The sleeves are on the long side, but that's good for me), the insulation without bulk is amazing and the articulation from the stretch is perfect.
