    First Light Hybrid Hooded Jacket

There's nothing better than getting first tracks while the rest of the world is still eating breakfast, but no one said getting up at 4 a.m. for a dawn patrol was easy. Heading out into the frigid morning air can be tough, so Black Diamond created the First Light Hooded Jacket to make that first step a little easier.

The First Light hoodie is Black Diamond's most breathable insulation piece, with PrimaLoft Silver Active technology that keeps you comfortable whether you're cruising up the skintrack, traversing a wind-blasted ridge, or hoofing it up a bootpack. The helmet-compatible hood is quick to flip up when the winds pick up, and lightweight stretch fabric allows full range of motion for tricky maneuvers on the ascent. The jacket stows into its internal chest pocket with a carabiner clip loop so you can clip it to your harness or stuff it in your pack when the weather changes abruptly.

Not a fan of the fit

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: XS
    • Height: 5'4"
    • Weight: 110lbs

I was so exited about this jacket! I wanted a synthetic mid layer for fall/winter sports and outdoor adventures, as well as something warm and flattering to wear casually. This one is not for me, mainly because the fit is so big!

It looked rather man-ish on my body..I had to double check to make sure i ordered a women’s! I have a short torso & arms. As the other reviews said, the jacket is long in these areas, so I ordered and xs, the arms still stuck out when I tried it on under my goretex shell. The elastic hem around the bottom wanted to hike up to my waist with any body movement creating a puffy muffin top look, I felt compelled to constantly pull it down to keep it flat against body & butt.

    Great winter trail running jacket

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium
    • Height: 5'4"
    • Weight: 150lbs

I mainly bought this for trail running, snow shoeing and biking in the cold, but now I wear it as my all around mid layer and I love it. It's comfortable, warm, light weight, and I can be active without over heating or sweating through layers of down.

    Great Mid-layer

    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: Small
    • Height: 5'4"
    • Weight: 125lbs

Love this mid-layer! I was looking for a good mid-layer for appraching winter rock climbs and this is it. The material is super durable and holds up well on the rock, so no worries with scraping. I wear a polartec fleece base layer and this hoody climbing throughout November and feel warm. Runs large, size down and you will be happy with the fit.

    Created for movement

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: Small
    • Height: 5'6"
    • Weight: 130lbs

Unlike other reviewers, I ended up sizing down (from medium to small) and still have room for a sweater or sweatshirt the runs on the slimmer side. The fit is long in the arms and torso but with plenty of room in the shoulders for movement. This is also my new favorite jacket for anything between 30 - 60. I also appreciate the color options that Black Diamond provides - flattering and timeless instead of flashy and overstated.

    Replaced my down puffer

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: XL
    • Height: 6'1"

After trying on the regular First Light jacket in a large, I decided to order this in an XL. Definitely glad I ordered up a size, the length is at low hip, arms are long enough to have no gapping when worn with mittens/gloves, and the shoulder width lets me maintain full mobility.
This jacket has insulation on the front through the core, in the hood, across the shoulders and through the top of the arms ending about 6 inches from the wrist. For as light as the insulation feels, I was impressed when I was able to wear this as my outer layer in 22-degree weather over a fleece, and a wool base layer and stay comfortably warm while I made my first turns of the season. The power-stretch type knit on the back and underside of the sleeves is extremely soft, and stayed dry even as it began to snow.
Super impressed with this jacket, and I would definitely buy it again. I've even started wearing it instead of my down puffer when I run errands and schlep around campus.
