Why We Like The Expedition 2 Pro Ski Pole

Black Diamond's Expedition series of poles are best-sellers among backcountry skiers, and the Expedition 2 Pro Ski Pole pairs the same best-selling design with Black Diamond's FlickLock Pro locking mechanism. We really like it because it's lighter, stronger, and easier to use with or without gloves on.

The only problem I have

The only problem I have with them is that sometimes, because they are adjustable, they don’t stay in place and shorten when I am skiing

Less than what I hoped for

3 things after one season. 1) I have noticed that one of the lower sections is slightly bent; this without any major incident, I did have a couple of minor falls during the season, but nothing I can remember that would have contributed to this (I have not bent a pole in 20 years) 2) when unlocked the sections can easy be separated, there is not stop at the end. I had to back track over a run to search for a section that fell out. I was carrying another persons poles at the time, so I did not notice. Cost me an hour and I was very lucky to have found it. 3) I would have liked a larger bump out on the handle below the top grip section, when you are not using the straps your hand can slide down the pole pretty easy.

Baskets are annoying

I rarely write reviews but I'm writing one so maybe I can save others some trouble. This is a sweet looking pole, the FlickLock mechanism seems pretty sweet, and they're light. I received the pole with the baskets already on them. Luckily I was testing some new bindings out at home and noticed one of my baskets on the floor after using the pole to pop my boot out of the binding. I then noticed that the baskets popped off very easily as other reviews have mentioned. I'm at least glad this didn't happen on a tour and lose the basket forever. Apparently you need to not only screw the basket on, but FIRST you need to soak them in hot water for 30+ seconds, then use an absurd and concerning amount of force (like I was worried I was going to slip and stab myself with the pole) to get the basket past the thread point and snug against a piece of plastic further up the pole. The good news is it works, the bad news.... why. Like, no other ski pole I've ever encountered required this nonsense. Finally, I happen to have touring bindings where you can use your ski pole loop to pull upward on the binding when transitioning from ski to tour mode, but the safety feature on these just causes the loop to pop out of the handle if I try to use them that way. At least that gripe is just an imcompatibility between pole and binding features. The basket thing, however, *side eye*.

Locking feature is super easy

Locking feature is super easy to use and locks tight. Baskets come off and go back on less than a minute. Overall give these a 10 out of 10.

Seem like a solid pair of poles

While I haven't used these yet (it is still September), they seem super nice upon receiving them. BD's flicklock tech makes adjusting them really easy, and I love the extended handle. That was actually one of the reasons I chose these poles. The handle can come out of the pole if enough force is applied, which is another cool feature. However, I'm not sure how much I would trust it in avalanche terrain. My only complaint is that they don't pack down very small, but since I've been using fixed-length poles up until now, it shouldn't be that big of an issue. Overall, they seem like a solid pair of poles. I'll have to see how they withstand to wearand tear

Light, long

Great poles. Only challenge is they don't collapse very far. If you're looking for a set and forget length, these are stellar. If you want then to collapse small for packing, splitboarding, etc, be aware they don't shrink up too much.
