Black Diamond's Crag 40L Backpack is a smaller version of the ever-popular Creek Backpacks, designed for climbers who dig bolted crags over splitter cracks. Its massive 40L capacity still holds more than a couple quickdraws, and with a rope strap outside the pack, you can get a picnic's worth of snacks and water in there along with the climbing essentials. There's a pocket at the top flap for guidebooks, and the internal zippered pocket protects your wallet, phone, and valuables in crowded crags. Rigid padding shields your back, shoulder straps, and waist belt from bumpy quickdraws so you can tackle trails longer than your average crag.

Carries weight very bad
- Familiarity:

Great pack for the capacity and full length lateral zipper, but It carries weight very poorly due to having little to no padding in the waist belt, with a 28in waist I had to fully crank the belt and it bearly transferred the load to the hip. My Mountain Hardware scrambler 25 (old version) carries the weight of a double rack of cams from .3 to 3 a single 4, a set of stoppers, 10 alpines, PAS, Harness and anchor material way better with just a slim nylon strap for the waist belt. If you're looking for a crag pack I wouldn't recommend this one. Wish I could return. Once I get a new crag back this will become my gym climbing bag. I wouldn't recommend, carries weight poorly and lacks load lifters. That said if you only go sport climbing for $100 this pack might just be enough, but it's not enough for a true crag pack.

Niche purpose
I bought this pack with the intention of hiking in for climbing. Using a few times, I am dedicating it for gear with a moderate hike in and setup a base where I will climb for the day. The pack looks awesome and durable like bd’s larger haul bags and I see it could be used as a junior haul bag. Beware there is no outside water pocket, an inconvenience if you have a considerable hike and need to a swig to rehydrate. The bag will hold gear for the day and I like the access from the side zipper. Gear may get jumbled and become a rats nest

Fantastic bag
This bag fits everything I need for the crag. I am able to fit all 12 of my quickdraws, a 60m rope, helmet as well as small snacks and accessories such as tape, file, etc. Shoes can be clipped to the outside of the bag for convenience as well.

Excellent
Great size for a day out at Shelf or similar. Single big pocket is great if you like to dump things or use individual organization on your own. Great pack and feels like it will last a lifetime

Nice but high waistbelt
I really like the pack but the waist belt rides super high, like around the middle of my stomach. I plan to exchange mine for the larger size. If you're unsure of sizes, I recommend sizing up!

Okay crag bag but great oversized gym bag
This is a decent bag but not quite ideal for my uses. Got it to use as a crag bag but didn't quite have enough space or organization for a day of sport climbing. I switched to a Stone 45 which I much prefer for my outdoor climbing and now use this bag for they gym were it's a little too big but otherwise works great. Overall quality and construction is great, just wasn't a great fit for how I like to pack my gear!

Great day pack
The best thing about the bag is the top to bottom zipper that allows you to either open the bag all the way, or just unzip the bottom portion to reach into the bottom of the bag without disturbing the items in the top. It has three nice handles spread about the bag which allow quick and convenient carry. Recommend this pack for day trips out to your spot.

Solid crag bag
This a solid crag bag. Comfortable for short approaches, solid design, and has everything you would expect for this type of pack. Tough, packs well, and handles being a bit wet.

Great pack, easily fits 60m rope, full standard trad rack or sport rack, two helmets, and some extras with no issues. Feels well balanced while hiking and construction is bombproof.
