Cirque 45L Backpack

Despite being one of Black Diamond's lightest, the Cirque 45 Backpack boasts plenty of space for day-long backcountry tours and ski mountaineering missions. Designed for minimalists and ski mountaineers, the Cirque features only the basics but still retains a full-featured design. It carries skis diagonally or at an A-frame, as well as your helmet, avalanche safety gear, ice axes, and even a climbing rope.

Although streamlined for minimalists, the Cirque still sports innovative technology that doesn't add a whole lot of weight to your kit. The SwingArm shoulder straps and stretch waist belt provide active suspension and a streamlined fit. The Cirque is compatible with Black Diamond's AvaLung and SilNylon lid pocket for added safety and capacity when traveling in avalanche terrain.

  • Black Diamond's ultralight backcountry pack for ski mountaineering

durability concerns

I really want to like this pack, but on my first outing with it for a summer ski objective, the thing tore and stitching started coming undone in the reinforcements for an A-frame ski carry. I’m really careful about avoiding unnecessary abuse on my gear (i.e. like not taking a pack off and dragging or dropping it on cheese-grater granite etc.). That the pack would show this much wear from one outing in its intended use—i.e. A-frame carry—was really disappointing. I’m hoping the one I received was defective and they’re not all this fragile. Backcountry set me up with an exchange, which I appreciate, because I want to give this pack another chance. Hopefully my impressions change and I will be able to update with a positive review. Otherwise, it’s features are great and highly functional; I appreciate how easy and accessible the helmet carry and avy pocket are; the zip on the side makes accessing items on the bottom of the main compartment very easy. My only complaint besides the durability concern is that pack could use load lifters on the shoulders and a waist belt with a smaller range (even in the medium / large); after a while with a day’s water, food, essentials, plus skis&boots in A-frame carry, the pack keeps more weight on the shoulders than I’d like, even when cranking the hip belt down practically to its smallest.

Versatile bag!

I've used it several times

All in all I am very impressed with this bag! It's lightweight, durable and comfortable all at the same time. I've used this bag now for some ski touring here in the Wasatch mountains and it's been a dream. I've also used it for some day hikes in the desert and I find it to be exactly what I need and nothing more. I plan on using it for climbing and some overnight hiking trips once the weather warms up. The only fault I really see with the bag is that the "Avalanche" pocket doesn't seem to have the most intuitive design, the slots that they have there are not especially useful for a probe or a shovel. It seems like that could have been designed a little more thoughtfully to hold your rescue equipment.

I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Bought this for ski touring and it's a very light pack. The sunglass pocket on the hip strap is pretty convenient. Although, I it's tough to also fit a hardcase for glasses inside of it. The side zip access pocket is a bit small, but better than only relying on top access. There aren't a lot of small pockets for organization, but there are enough.

Finally a great ski pack

I've used it several times

why do I love this bag? well its extremely lightweight, but still has plenty of well thought out pockets and straps to store your gear. Loops for ice axes, separated avy gear pouch, side access to the main compartment. I've been very impressed with this pack and highly recommend it to friends!
