Great belay device

I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This is a great belay device. I like the serrated grooves because it grips the rope better for taking and lowering. I also like how big the carabiner is.

Great Belay Package for All Climbers

I've put it through the wringer

The ATC-XP by Black Diamond is the go-to tube style belay device for any climber. I prefer the XP rather than the regular old ATC because of the added friction for the brake hand. It is super simple to lower, and I'd recommend this device for all beginners. It is really easy to use for rappelling as well.

Awesome Belay!

I've put it through the wringer

This is a great belay for sport climbing for both in and outdoors. It's help up to a lot of use, and I get use out of it when I go canyoneering as well. Definitely a must have for any climber's arsenal.

Handy Belay Device

I just bought another one of these, because they are really handy to take up climbing with me. I mostly use an ATC for repelling, because it's so easy to set up. I used my first ATC while repelling with a pretty small canyoneering rope, and it worked pretty well. I would be a little concerned doing bigger repels with a smaller width rope, because it was a bit hard to hold the rope, but that was expected using a small rope. It works perfectly for toprope belaying, and I would recommend newer climbers to start with this belay device.

Take climbing a step further

I've used it several times

When I was just starting out, I didn't have a comparison. I used a standard belay device -- also by Black Diamond -- that didn't have friction to it. The rope moves freely through it and you end up bearing a lot of that weight. Not with this one. The biggest advantage with this one is that you feel like you have more control when on the ground, no matter the size of the climber. The friction is like an extra set of hands helping you out. It can make a world of difference when you're starting out and still feeling unsure of yourself. For not much more, this has been a well-worth-it purchase for me.

Solid belay device

I've put it through the wringer

The jaws on this make it super easy to hold your climber. its solid metal so its tough but its super light. Ive used it 4 times a week at the gym and outside and I have no complaints or issues. I had a climber fall while I was pulling slack and before I could pull the rope down to lock in fully, it was already stopped. Its super safe when used correctly. I'll buy one again in a couple of years when this one blows out.
