    Prepare for takeoff.

Rest assured that Black Diamond's ATC-Pilot Belay Device will help you catch whipping lead climbers like any other assisted braking device. Unlike most assisted braking belay devices, the ATC-Pilot doesn't use any moving components to ensure a secure brake; instead, the device's unique geometry makes the rope pinch itself whenever the rope tugs too hard on the climber side, ensuring a naturally reliable catch every time. This is Black Diamond's first attempt at making an assisted braking device with increased security and safety, and climbers can't help but admire its compact, lightweight, sleek design that could only come for Black Diamond.

    Great Beginner Device

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Super easy to use and lightweight, this belay device offers auto locking technology and a very low price point. It's great if you're just getting into climbing.

    Unique take on assisted-braking Belays

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I ordered this after i lost my ATC and have been STOKED on its performance. Although it does take some time to become familiar the friction based assisted braking as well as the lowering.

This device is great for belayers who aren't as tentative and enjoy the added safety feature. I found that larger Black Diamond GridLock Screwgate Carabiner (Item #BLD00HD) is best suited for this device to limit choppy rope releases. The pilot is best suited for top roping but can handle lead belays with ease. The lowering takes time to dial in but is among the smoothest and most controlled you can find for the price.

    Great for the gym

I got one to keep in my gym bag because I kept forgetting to grab my grigri and my gym just instituted a requirement for auto locking belay devices. I still prefer the grigri but I think this would be a great choice for a new gym climber, it is cheaper and functions well.

      Great for Sport Climbing

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

So far I have used the pilot belay device in the gym and I have been very impressed. It is a smooth and easy learning curve from a traditional ATC device. The lowering system is the smoothest of any belay device I have used. Overall, great purchase if you are looking for a single pitch sport route belay device.

Good for top rope, not so good for lead

This belay device works well for tope rope, but I found it difficult to use for lead belaying. It was just too jerky/not smooth when giving slack out. I ended up returning it. Nice for when the climber is hanging, but overall not for me.

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Does the job, but not the best belay device on the market. The plastic is a bit loud and clunky, and the lowering seems to have a bit too much friction on meandering routes, but is very smooth on straight routes. Works best for very vertical routes or top roping. Feeding rope is incredibly fast.

Easy transition from using an ATC

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have been using the Black Diamond Pilot consistently for about 6 months and have been very impressed. For someone who prefers to use an ATC belay device, this product is a great transition. The combination of being light-weight and the familiarity of using a tubular device, the Pilot is not far off. The assisted breaking along with the reliability of feeding slack makes this device a fantastic product.

        Excellent single-pitch belay device

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Considered that it is a single pitch belay device, it hasn’t the same multiple use that a tubular device has. It makes this job excellently as giving rope is quite eased, whereas the blocking system is semi-assisted, what gives more safety to belaying. I myself prefer this than the gri gri.

It does the Job. No-more, No-less

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I understand the reason behind the device and for that alone it is a good product. If you own a Grigri and are efficient at using it, there is really no added benefit to this device. However, if you are newer to the sport, on a budget, or you're just old school and overall like the tubular style devices better, this would be a great product for you.
It is exactly what you get. no-more, no-less.

        Single Pitch ALL DAY!

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The Black Diamond ATC Pilot is a sweeeeet device for all your single pitch needs. With this device you get a great Assisted Breaking Device for a great price. This is a bit of a one trick pony as you cannot belay a second from above on any multipitch routes. This is an ideal device for single pitch cragging or working sport routes in the gym.

        Very Impressed

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is my third Black Diamond belay device and couldn't be more satisfied. I previously used the ATC Guide and always wanted a auto-braking or assisted braking device. The ATC Pilot is by far my favorite device. It's easy to use and is just like a regular ATC but the lowering is a little bit different. When belaying lead it takes a little getting used to how to give out slack and can be a little weird at first. However, after a couple of climbs it becomes really easy. I found that the device locks pretty quick and you always need to pull up on the rubber hold to pay out any slack. My only two complaints are pretty small. First, the plastic at the bottom of the device feels very thin and I feel like it may break if someone stepped on it. . I think the device is probably built a lot stronger than it looks and wouldn't give out but It still feels a really thin. Secondly, I find lowering to be either very fast or extremely slow, it's very hard to regulate in my opinion.
All in all would recommend for any sport or gym climber. Not for belaying a second though.

Wow , the first word I️ said prior to using the ATC pilot . Black Diamond does it again with this chiefly superior assisted-braking belay device . The device feels amazing and smooth in the hand, the payout for single pitch leading situations is flawless and much smoother than other comparable belay devices. The thumb loop placement is perfect and allows for comfortable lowering and rope payout . The only thing to watch out for is trouble with lowering and thumb pain when the lowering climber weighs a lot . Overall this device is amazing , lightweight , easy to use , and good looking . Highly recommend for people looking to get the most out of single pitch read or sport leads

Very Nice Device, just one small thing..

          • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

The Most recent addition to the competitive world of assisted breaking devices is definitely a winner. As highlighted by other reviews it is very small and light weight. The assisted breaking works very well. Like any belay device there is a little learning curve but it is very easy and intuitive if you have any experience with a traditional ATC or basically any non mechanical belay device. the only reason I did not give it the full 5 stars is the way the rope feeds out the front of the device. It is not a big deal at all but the position it forces you into with the brake hand out in front of you just feels a bit funny and uncomfortable to me. Overall i like the device and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a great sport climbing belay device.

Great Belay Device for Single Pitch Rout

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I love this ATC Pilot. It is very lite, easy to use and you feel like your combining an ATC with a grigi but without the weight and much more ease of use than the grigiri alone. It is very easy to get rope out to a lead climber and belaying someone down is its real selling point. I showed the Pilot to my friends at my indoor climbing gym and the next day the local REI sold out! I have used the Pilot outside twice since getting it a few weeks ago and it's perfect for working projects and simply climbing any type of single pitch route.

          Unique Design

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The Black Diamond ATC Pilot is lightweight and is easy to use. This device is very similar to a regular ATC but you have more leverage when someone is top roping or leading. This helps with less hand fatigue and a overall more comfortable belay! I'm in love with it!
