Alpine FLZ Trekking Poles
Your knee can handle the first six miles of the trail into Wind River's Cirque, but the last six miles will require Black Diamond's Alpine FLZ Trekking Poles. These poles fold into three sections so you can strap them to your backpack for the flat part, and Black Diamond's SlideLock secures the poles so they don't collapse on you midstep. FlickLock adjustments let you lengthen or shorten each pole to tackle various degrees of steepness, and both the tips and baskets are interchangeable for powder baskets if you want to take these poles skiing.
- Trekking poles collapse so you can hike flat terrain barehanded
- SlideLock keeps the aluminum shaft solidly connected while hiking
- FlickLock allows quick-and-easy adjustments on the trail
- Included baskets and tips designed specifically for rocky terrain
- Item #BLD00SC

Sturdy and well thought out
I have used and abused these on several climbs in the Cascades, both as hiking poles with a heavy pack on approaches, and paired with a piolet while climbing snowfields. They're holding up fantastically. The folding design works great, and is easy to operate with gloves on. When folded up, they take up a bit more space than telescoping poles, but this is more than made up for in durability. The locking systems on these hold up much better than fully telescoping poles -- I haven't noticed any slippage/compression even after long days. There is one telescoping section, but once you have that dialed in to your preferred length, you never have to readjust it -- you can keep that section in place even when it's collapsed, and the extended grip below the cork lets you comfortably choke up on the poles rather than adjust the length for steeper terrain. I would definitely buy these again -- though I don't think I'll need to anytime soon.

I'm a larger guy (6'3/230), and these poles feel incredibly sturdy. The cork grip is very comfortable - I ordered these and the carbon FLZ poles, and the comfort provided by the cork is worth the extra weight to me. The foldability combined with the adjustment make them versatile and easy to transport. I only have one 10 mile hike on them so far, but I can tell they're great.

Great for me and the wife
I have the fixed length version of this too, but what is nice about this version is that when out for a hike with the family, the top end fits me perfectly for when I am carrying the two year old and the lower end fits the wife perfectly when she is the one doing the heavy lifting. Also, even though these are collapsible I never feel like performance is compromised.

Packable and Sturdy
I ordered these poles for a backpacking trip and was curious to see how they would stand up to five days of heavy use in varying conditions. After a week on the trail, I was blown away by their performance. The SlideLock mechanism made them feel incredibly sturdy and the carbide tip performed great on snow, mud, and dirt. For trickier sections that required scrambling or the use of an ice axe, I was able to fold these up and stash them in the side pocket of my bag, then pull them out when needed and reassemble them in seconds - often faster than others in my group with traditional poles! The cork grip really helped keep my hands dry during sweatier parts of the day, a big improvement (for me) over rubber grips. I'm excited to swap out the baskets and get these out for some ski touring this winter! For reference - I'm about 5'10" and went with the 120-140cm. After some extensive use, I found that 120cm is my ideal length but I'd prefer the option to go shorter in certain situations. I would recommend the 105-125cm for others my height.

the Tech Specs say the grip is FOAM. Is that right? Previous models had cork grip with a foam lower grip for steeper terrain. Still looks like that in the icture.
