Why We Like The Blacktail 2 Tent

When the trail's calling, there's no time to wait; so we load up our pack, grab the Big Agnes Blacktail 2 Two-Person Three-Season Tent, and leave civilization behind. Just because we leave the comforts of home for the mountains doesn't mean we'll be roughing it, seeing as the Blacktail's a lightweight, tough, and waterproof shelter that's downright luxurious.

At just 4.5 pounds, the Blacktail easily lets you enjoy the protection of PU-coated, seam-taped shelter, with two doors for easy access and dual vestibules for plenty of dry gear storage. You only need two lightweight aluminum poles, too, so pitching and packing are a breeze. Media pockets on the inside have cable routing so you can catch a few minutes of alone time when your partner's getting on your nerves, and the reflective guylines and webbing reduce the likelihood of accidentally tearing your tent down on your nighttime wanderings.

A great tent with just a couple of flaws

I've been looking for a medium lightweight tent for general camping and shorter backpack trips and the Blacktail seemed like a good fit. I bought it in fall and put it up in my yard for several days to test it out. It went through several days of rain, including a legit downpour and some wind. I spent several hours in it. This is a really good tent and I like it a lot - but a couple flaws were important enough that it wasn't a good fit for me. Here's what I like: 1. It's an awesome balance of space, comfort, durability, and weight. Not a lightweight backpacking tent but a good bit lighter than most in its category and could be taken on shorter pack backing trips no problem. 2. For the price point, these are the best tent stakes I've seen. Lightweight, hug into the ground, stay put, and Big Agnes actually gives you enough stakes to properly stake out the tent. Tip of the hat to you, BA. 3. The fabric. While it doesn't say ripstop, I can feel the quality of it - a really good balance of durability and weight. Like perfect for what I'm looking for. 4. The shape, design, and color is great. Actual privacy and wind protection around the bottom of the tent body. Thanks BA, we like this a lot. Plenty of head and hang out space for two, good sleep space for two. Well made, taught gear pockets up top, out of the way - hallelujah for no sagging gear pockets. Two doors and and two vestibules of reasonable size. 5. Great idea to put the two vents at the top. However, this leads to one of the issues, see below... What I didn't like: 1. During a heavy rain (common in my region), the top vents did let some rain in. To note, the vents were open - and you may think it silly to leave them open but it was to minimize condensation and keep air flow inside the tent. If you caught it in time and were willing to close the vents you'd probably be solid. But if a rain came while out trekking or sleeping at night, it would be a bummer to wake or come back to wet sleeping bags. I believe BA could easily resolve this issue by extending the fabric about 1/2 inch on both the top and bottom of the vent. I hope they try that. 2. The zippers. I've never used a tent with such loud, not-smooth, inconvenient zips. Considering how fabulous this tent is, with good thought and care put into the design, I'm baffled BA chooses this design and type of zippers. It's a two zipper design, they meet in the corner. You have to use both hands, and have to work them to snug them into their meet-up spot, and get your body in the right angle to get the zips going smoothly. And they are so loud I imagine the zippers waking up not just your tent mate, but folks in a nearby tent as well. I'm genuinely perplexed and curious why BA made this choice. 3. Lastly, common with many tents, just a smidge of rain sits in some places on the fly, particularly the slight indented area created by having the vents open. The fly isn't very taught just below the vents and gets pushed into a very slight dip. Rain didn't leak through so that's great. And if you tap the fly it rolls right off. But I feel this could be resolved easily with the above mentioned extension of fabric to the vents and slightly tightening below vent area. Overall I'm really impressed with the Blacktail 2, many high quality elements and a great weight for the price. But I live in a rainy climate and I could see the vents and zipper issues being a problem especially if using the tent for more than a couple of nights in a row. However I do recommend this tent - the zippers may not bother some folks at all, and if you're not using it in heavy or windy rain it's got great air circulation and lots of room and is very comfortable.

Blacktail Series

The Blacktail two, three, and four-person tents are light enough for the backcountry, and strong enough for the front country. A tried and true shelter with excellent value for backpackers who want a super comfortable tent after a long day on the trail. The Blacktail series of tents offers spacious sleeping areas with easy access through two, side-entry doors and vestibules, making early morning entry and exit with a tent-mate more stealth when nature calls.
