The all-season option.
The Bern Brentwood is designed to go seamlessly from bike commute, to skate park, to ski resort. It’s nicely-vented for summertime activities, but add the winter liner (sold separately), and you’ll be warm and nicely protected when you’re shredding the halfpipe, too.
The Brentwood uses a PVC shell with a Zipmold liner, which is a bit lighter than traditional EPS foam helmets, and it’s something you’ll appreciate after a long day on the bike or in the park.

- Q & A
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
I love this helmet. So so much! Bought it to replace an OLD protec helmet from my teen years. So glad i did. I was concerned about the visor but that ended up being an amazing feature. up in the afternoon to vent airflow towards my face and keep my glasses fog free, down in the morning to keep the sun out of my eyes. the MIPS is fantastic. the pads, minimal, are super comfortable. i have a RYLO camera on the top and it holds up fine. MIPS keeps it tight on my head without shaking or moving, sweat is seldom an issue, bottom line i LOVE THIS HELMET. ive never had anything but ProTec from the mid to late 90s and holy moley this is so much better. great color, great feature set, superb comfort.
10/10 would suggest. i am a bern fan!
good design, rugged
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
Initially, I felt my temples being sqeezed by the helmet/liner. Breaking-in and adjusting the liner relieved this irritation.
The helmet is rugged, great for 3 season use (not summer). In winter, I pull out liner and use a had under the helmet.
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
This is a light helmet with great ventilation. The protective foam is injected and fused to the pvc shell. The design actually channels air up over your scalp and out the top and rent vent holes. The fabric brim gives it a nice aesthetic and also shields your eyes from glare. If its affecting your line of site it can be tipped up and out of the way or removed entirely (an excellent cleaning option) I intend to try this out on the river.. a little more fabric than your typical river runner but we shall see how it fares.

Good fit, cool design
I needed a new helmet and wanted one that wasn't quite so aggressively bicycle-y. The Brentwood fit the bill. I enjoy the fold up/down brim on it. It really helps if it's raining or too sunny. Fits great. I haven't had a reason to use the rear dial adjuster yet, but I like the idea.
Sizing and new multi adjustment knob
- Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
I have a 6 7/8 head. The 2013 small/medium with velcro adjustment is too tight to be comfortable. The new 2014 medium/large has an adjustable knob. This addition, since it sits outside the shell, causes the adjustment mechanism to sit low on the back of the neck restricting a looking up attitude and potentially acting as an unwanted lever to the back of the neck during a fall. Poor design.
So I have dreads which make my head a tad bit bigger when it comes to hat/helmet size and I'm sitting right at the 23.8 inches (top of the L-XL range) when wearing a beanie. Is this still the recommended size range with a liner in the helmet plus a beanie? I'm also wanting to use it for summer season sports so I want it to fit over just my dreads too. Any recommendations? I would prefer to not have to reorder another size.
I think that the L-XL would be the right choice. That would ensure that you can use it as a summer helmet too. It might be a little snug with a beanie on under there, if you're going to do that I would try and get a beanie that is really low profile.
Remember... that helmet is never going to be any smaller than the first time that you put it on.
although mike d's picture shows an adjustment dial, the helmet looks different than the one(s) above. does this helmet actually have a dial?
yes for 2014 they now have the dial adjustment as shown in Mike's pic
is the visor removable??
The entire liner pulls out! Bern makes replacement liners that are season specific (winter/summer) and others with audio kits - some with and others without brims. You'll see people riding without the liner at all but its probably more comfortable to keep one in there. If you do replace the liner just be sure to snag one that is size/fit compatible.
When the size is L/XL, is it closer to L...
When the size is L/XL, is it closer to L or XL? I've seen this helmet sold at individual sizes elsewhere.
Its the hard hats that are sized separately by Small, Medium, Large and such. These zip molded helmets are sized with the combined sizes and should accommodate the full range within the sizes listed in the size chart.
