Cold zippers - really wanted to LOVE it

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: large
    • Height: 5'3"
    • Weight: 140lbs

Fits well and true to size, love the style and the inside snaps to make the jacket more fitted. i added a packable down sweater to test for size, and was very comfortable. I think anyone will look good in this jacket. Zipper only goes up to a few inches above the bottom of the upper thigh high jacket, cold air may flow upward. The zipper to top rests on your chin, so its cold and not comfortable - with that said, great metal zippers, very smooth. I also did not like the large hood, the fur felt cheap and not soft, zip off the fur, and the coat becomes quite plain. Unfortunately I had to return it.

    Almost perfect

As a few other people mentioned in their reviews of this jacket, the fit is a bit weird. No room at the hips and really big in the shoulders. I tried XS and S - small was reeallly bulky and the sleeves were very long. the XS fit perfectly at the top but could barely zip around my hips. I'm 5'3" and 124 lbs, fuller hips and small top. Other than the fit, the jacket is beautiful, well designed, looks durable and especially warm. Would be great for a different body type but not mine. Bummer!!!

    Classy and Cozy

I really love this jacket. I've used it in the snow and in the rain. I love the many pockets and removable "fur". Being able to take the fur off during rain and put it on during the snow makes a ton of difference. I appreciate the waist strap on the inside that makes the coat a little more fitted. The cuffs also extend past the end of the sleeve and help keep me warm! The material is great and feels high quality. It's a really great coat and I get a ton of compliments on it! :)

    Pretty Good

I really liked this coat. It does run large though. The annoying thing about is however is that the when the coat is closed, the zipper is cold and sits on your face which is kinda annoying when its cold out.

    Odd Fit

    • Size Bought: Xs
    • Height: 5'2"

I was really excited that this coat had a durable shell. I bought it to replace my down coats that I wear throughout the cold Michigan winters. I am 5’2” 110 pounds so I went with xs...and it was too big in some areas, too small in others. Overall the fit was just weird. I had to squeeze my legs together to zip it at the bottom and it was uncomfortably tight waist down. However, from the waist up it was baggy and way too big. I’m sad that it’ll have to go back. I did really like the details and that it felt warm and high quality.

    Super Warm, Figure Flattering!

I've been eyeballing this parka for quite some time -- I have a lot of technical puffy and shell jackets, none of which are a neutral color or go past my hips, so I wanted something more casual that I could wear as an every day winter coat without colors clashing.

After comparing several other parkas and coats, I finally decided to bite the bullet and purchase the Wingate. Price was ultimately the deciding factor along with reviews/looks, and I'm really happy that I chose this one!

This parka is hands down one of the warmest coats i have ever worn. The down insulation helps regulate heat, and the outer material is excellent at repelling wind. Plus the sleeves on the inside act as an extra insulating layer/comfy factor. The length of it is another reason why it's so warm -- my legs and bum have zero complaints about being covered up!

I am not a huge fan of a fur hood, so I was really glad to have the option to remove it. There are also loads of pockets -- I do wish the ones on the outside were just a little less wide but otherwise they are great for stowing my iPhone and wallet (I hate carrying a purse)!

Along with all that, I've gotten compliments from women/men alike on a daily basis! So you'll be feeling cozy warm and confident in the Wingate for sure.

Cons: This jacket definitely runs larger than I expected it to. If you have small shoulders like I do, the back of the arms will sit out a little bulky. And if you are short like I am, the sleeves will be just a little long but if you push them up a little they tend to stay in place -- the hem also sits closer to the knees than in the model photo. Though, after asking many people including those who have complimented the coat, they've all said that it doesn't "look big" and that it looks like it's supposed to be a long/trench coat style. So it's not a huge deal as it worked out for the better, but I think Basin and Range should definitely consider people with smaller frames when they make the next model of the Wingate!

(Side note: I purchased this in Navy and I love the color. It stands out a little from the traditional black coats and it's a really sleek tone. One thing I noticed was that in the model photo for the Navy colorway, they forgot to remove the white protective paper from the pullcords! So they won't be white -- but black like the Khaki and Charcoal colorways).

    Super Warm, Figure Flattering!

    Great, but not for me.

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I am pretty impressed with this jacket. The color I got was the charcoal one and it's super cool. The material is spot on and it seems to be pretty warm. My only complaint is how it fits. I found that it does run big. The pocket jet out at the waste which isn't the most flattering and the shoulders were quite big for me. It just didn't fit me well, so I'm not hating on it. Impressed with Basin and Range, especially for the price point.

    Crossroad of cost and Quality

This jacket is a little cheaper than some of the competition. but it sacrifices nothing. The quality of this jacket is awesome.

    Gorgeous Toasty Cost

    • Height: 5'7"

I love the color of this coat and the pocket and zipper details. I never worry about being cold when I have this coat. The hood is adorable. I wear a medium and the only thing I have noticed about this coat is that it is snug around the hips. I have to pull it up to zipper and button it but once I have it done up, I can pull it back down and it fits great. It makes the coat snug and toasty.

Good but a could use some tweaking.

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs small

I have been looking for warm, affordable winter jacket for a couple of years. I got the olive and I love the color. It is a good weight and I love that it is long so it covers my butt. I live in the northeast so we have some brutal cold this winter. I am 5” 9” so a lot of the jackets I looked at were too short. I ordered the XL. As with someone else’s review, I find the sleeves are tight - I am active and I have a little bulk in my biceps and I have broad shoulders. Again, I find it pretty snug across the shoulders. Not really any room for layers comfortably underneath. The other thing is that the hood is very deep which is good but the fur gets in my eyes so I may have to trim it - yes I know I can remove the fur but I like it. I have had several people compliment me that the jacket is stylish. So far it has kept me toasty warm. As I mentioned, I wish they had added a couple of inches across the shoulders and the sleeves were a slightly roomier but overall I am pleased with it. It also helps that I got it on sale.

I was looking for a (responsibly sourced) down waterproof parka and was about to give up on finding something affordable. Then I found this jacket and was pretty stoked, so I waited for it to go on sale then bought it.

    Pros:
    - Down and waterproof, nice colors, removable fur trim, split in back for movement, double zipper, warm material inside pockets, lots of pockets, affordable, solid construction, thick elastic cuffs, hood is great for windy days

    Cons:
    - bulkier and boxer than I was expecting*, stacked front pockets add excess bulk to hip area, drawstring at waist doesn't do much//wide fit around waist, not as warm with the damp cold**, hood snaps pop off a bit too easily, no guard between cold metal zipper & chin

I'm not sure if I would personally size down on this one, because it fits well in my (broad) shoulders, I wouldn't want it any tighter in my hips, and the length is nice. There's just way too much space in the waist (it doesn't feel very tapered to me). Good if you carry your weight around the middle, but I have an athletic build and my waist is relatively small, while my weight is more in my hips and thighs. I ended up putting knots in the drawstring to get it tighter around the waist but it bunches up because of the extra fabric. Overall I think I'll keep it because the price is hard to beat and it is nice and warm.

*there were different model pictures when I first bought it, making the jacket look much more flattering than it really is. The more recent model photos seem a bit more realistic
** I needed layers under it for a mid-30s day in Portland, OR -- but in 15-degree weather in Cleveland with a windchill, I was fine.

My favorite winter coat by far!

I have been wearing this jacket for several months and I cannot believe the amount of compliments I receive on a daily basis. The most impressive thing about the coat is the attention to detail; I especially love the 2 way zipper for getting in and out of cars. The leather accents adds a splash of color to match back to my footwear, and the faux fur trim is useful and well made. I gave one to my mom for Christmas, that's how much I love it!

    Great for tall girls...

I am returning the coat because it just didn’t work for my shape, but still wanted to write a review on the quality. This is a beautiful coat, the interior quilting and exterior shell will definitely keep you warm and dry, and the leather zipper pulls and extra strip of material inside the flap show the attention to detail. The only negative for me was the fit...although there is an interior adjustment for the waist, it was actually too stretchy, and even at its smallest, was still quite loose. For reference, I am 5’7”, 145, 36/29/40. I chose the medium, which JUST fit my hips, but was quite large in the waist & shoulders. Sleeves are usually a bit short on me, but these were a little long. I would recommend this coat for the quality without reservation...and would say it would be perfect for someone tall, with a more athletic build (broader shoulders & straight hips)...now off to continue my search for the perfect winter coat.

    size

    • Size Bought: medium

Received this coat today. I actually liked the styling and it was very well made but like every other coat/brand I've tried this season the sleeves are just way too small. Why does every womans coat I try have toothpick size arms-I want room to move. This coat would make me crazy trying to drive with it on. I had a normal size sweater on when I tried the jacket and it was way too tight. The shoulder room was actually very good-first coat I had on that the medium actually fit as I have wide shoulders. Too bad about the sleeves , this coat is being returned.

    Great Jacket

got this for my sister In-law who typically wears a Medium in most outerwear. I listened to the reviews for this coat being true to size/running large and went with the Medium. But when it arrived, the jacket was very narrow and hard to move around in when zipped up. I exchanged it for a size Large so she would have more room to layer and adjust. The Large fit her way better! Even though it almost felt a bit TOO big in this size at first, there are adjustable tabs on the inside of the coat that allowed her to fit it to your form. . Fantastic jacket, and all of the material quality feels great to the touch! Super warm too.

I bought this Jacket for my wife for Christmas and it was a huge hit. First of all the jack looks great on her. It's fitted just right that it doesn't look puffy and is form fitting but allows a sweater underneath comfortably. The Jacket is also very warm. When comparing to a 500 count North Face down jacket and a Roxy ski jacket this is just as warm or warmer. I love the grey color and seems to work well even when we are dressing up. The wife loves it which means I love it.

I spent a lot of time and "chats" with Backcountry helpers. I was favoring the Fjallhaven but did not really like the style which seemed boxy. The woman I spoke with was so helpful. She has this jacket and recommended it highly. I have broad shoulders and small hips. Fits perfectly and over the bum. I used it today in our first NE snowstorm with -0 and 30 mile an hour winds. Never was cold.
The style is more fitted and you can even fit the waist more (using snaps to fasten it rather than a cord). The hood was in my way but I don't think I used the fitting correctly.
If it makes it through this New England winter and lots of dog walks, snowshoeing I am more than sold! Less than half the $ of the other I was
    considering.

I typically wear a Medium in everything. I listed to the reviews on here and sized down to a Small and it does not fit, I cannot zip it. This is very form fitted and not forgiving, I will be exchanging for a Medium. Beautiful jacket!

    Cute

Super cute but runs a little big! The adjustable waist didn't make much of a difference in the shape of the jacket

    Unanswered Question

I'm 5'5/5'6, with broad shoulders, slightly longer than average arms, and a bottom-heavy build. I'm usually a size small but it sounds like this jacket runs pretty big - any advice on whether I should buy a small or xsmall? Thanks!

    Unanswered Question

Will you guys be re-stocking this in a size small anytime soon?

Will this be restocked in size XS anytime soon?

Hey MB, as of right now, it doesn't look like we have any XS incoming. I'd be happy to find a similar jacket for you, feel free to reach me at my direct line 801.204.4547 or my email cojohnson@backcountry.com. Best regards, Connor
