    Winter thriving.

Day 3 of the snowpocalypse. Your supplies are running low, so pull on the Basin and Range Women's Blizzard Down Maxi Coat and venture out. You brace yourself as you open the door to the outside world, expecting piercing cold, but find that you feel cozy. The 550-fill down insulation's high warmth-to-weight ratio means you stay super warm without being weighed down as you walk to your neighborhood market. The long length of this coat extends down past your knees for extra protection from wind and cold. A two-way zipper enables you to customize the coat's closure for easier walking.

As you go, you notice that everything feels a little more magical when it's frosted with snow. So you slow down, enjoying the moment. The hood of the coat keeps your head nice and toasty, while the removable faux fur trim helps protect your face from blowing snow and adds a pop of style. Rib knit cuffs are extra warm and keep the wind out as you go. You reach the market calm, composed, and warm. You appreciate the way the coat's sophisticated silhouette and metal zipper pulls make you feel stylish. Before leaving the store, you text your roommates to let them know you might be longer than expected, and then stash your phone in the internal zippered pocket, pull up the hood, and enjoy the walk back home.

Got this for the grandma. slim and flattering. light weight, and pretty warm.

Not warm enough for below 35 degrees

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: Medium
    • Height: 5'4"
    • Weight: 135lbs

I was really excited about this coat, and it is indeed beautiful -- however, it is not as warm as described and is much more thin than I expected. I live in Boston where it's regularly below freezing in the winter, and this is not warm enough to keep me comfortable. I wish I had known the temperature range this coat was best for before purchasing.

    LOVE THIS COAT!

    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: L
    • Height: 5'1"
    • Weight: 145lbs

I was a bit apprehensive to order this coat because (1) I am very picky and (2) I wear all different sizes. I like to try things on before I purchase -- especially given the price of this coat. But, I read the reviews and figured I couldn't go wrong. I am relatively short, 5'1". The length of the coat hits right below my calf -- which I love. I got a size L, but am contemplating returning for a M. The coat is very warm, yet lightweight. I am going to wear this primarily for commuting. The color is beautiful and the texture is very nice. I called customer service because the coat went on sale after I purchased it. The gentleman I spoke with was extremely pleasant and professional. I will definitely order from Backcountry again -- and most definitely will purchase another Basin and Range, I'm sure.

I gave this as a Christmas gift just in time for the snow to arrive. She loved the style and the warmth was perfect. Very happy with this purchase.

    Great fit and so fluffy

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: XS
    • Height: 5'2"
    • Weight: 116lbs

I think this is a great stylish jacket for temps in the 30s.
i am 5' 2". I weigh 116lbs. I ordered the XS and I loved the way it fit and how long the jacket was. It also felt like i was wearing a big fluffy blanket.
My only gripe with the jacket is that i wish it was warmer. don't get me wrong- this is a warm jacket. However, i live in Boston where the temps dip down to single digits. And i also commute to work. I need a jacket that i can throw on and be completely toasty in when it's 0 degrees outside. This jacket is warm and perfect for 30s but not single digits.
For comparison- i also own a Canada Goose Trillium. Now that is a jacket that i can wear in freezing temperatures.

    Surprisingly warm and flattering fit

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size

I have to admit when I ordered the blizzard down maxi coat I thought it would either be exactly what I have been looking for or hideous. I just couldn't tell from the pictures if it was the right shape. I have had trouble with other coats being tight across the shoulders or hips and when I sized up the midsection was too bulky. I had also read reviews of coats that allowed wind in from the bottom because of their "A-line" or "Bell" shape at the bottom. Happy to report the coat is a keeper. This coat is long and narrower at the bottom which prevents the cold air from entering. It fit perfectly and still allowed me to layer underneath. When the coat arrived I was concerned as it was less puffy than my daughters Patagonia down with it parka and I feared it wouldn't be as warm. Pleasantly surprised that it is very warm. It kept me warm while watching my daughters alpine ski race in -15 degree weather (I live in Minnesota where life doesn't stop for cold weather). I did have multiple layers on but was much warmer than having those same layers under other coats. The hour glass silhouette eliminated a lot of the bulky feeling I experience with other down parkas.

    Awesome go-to winter coat!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Small
    • Height: 5'6"

After extensive research I bought this coat online with only a few reviews and zero experience with the brand. Good call! From the pictures I could tell that the length and cut would be flattering —and they are! The weight is perfect, cozy like a sleeping bag without the bulk. The finish is a charcoal/black with a subtle linen pattern, nice sheen. There is a double zipper (top down/bottom up) so if I need to ride a horse or run hurdles I think I could do so handedly while staying toasty. Nice deep pockets with zippers, good height on collar and a hood that stays put! Sturdy loop for hanging up. The faux fur collar snaps off—good for laundering. I’ve run through wash and steam refresh and it held up like new/without issue. Nice compliments from friends and strangers alike when out around town or walking the dog in sub freezing weather. Would buy again! AND...excellent customer service from backcountry: I called as there was an additional discount after I had received my coat. Uugh, I decided to call after reviewing their sales policy online only to engage in the most straight-forward and pleasant customer service phone exchange I have ever had where I was promptly credited the difference. Big fan!

    Great Coat!

This coat is warm, comfortable, stylish and has the best hood ever! No hat required and keeps the snow out of my hair and off of my face. Have recieved many compliments and the price is right!!

    Heavier, warm and great cut

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: XS
    • Height: 5'3"
    • Weight: 107lbs

This keeps you warm. I wore it around town in 20 degree weather, and it kept me nice and toasty. The sleeves hit me just right, while the is cut around the torso is just perfect. I am petite, at 5'3" 107lbs, and the XS is perfect... the length goes to mid shin.

    Mom's Favorite Winter coat

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Extra Large
    • Height: 5'4"

I bought this for my mom last Christmas and she loves it! We go up to Mammoth a few times a season and this year it was really cold and snowy each time. She felt warm, comfortable and stylish all at the same time when we'd go out to dinner after skiing. The removable fur on the hood is a nice touch too (she likes to keep the fur on the jacket). She wears a 16 in women's clothing and she's kinda busty. The XL jacket fit her well but a little tight in the chest. She's 5'4" and the length of the jacket hits just above her knees. Overall she's really happy with it and she's more enthusiastic about leaving the condo in a snow storm.

    My Wife's Go-To Jacket

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

My wife lived in her maxi coat all winter! She loves the feminine cut and that it isn't overly puffy! Considering she is always cold, she stayed super warm wherever we went. She loved wearing this jacket around town and even out hiking the trails. A great everyday, every occasion jacket. I honestly don't know what she would do without this coat.

    Is it waterproof?

    Hey Amanda,

This jacket is not waterproof but you can add a DWR treatment to the jacket like our Nikwax Down Proof Solution (item NIK0037 on our site). If you have any further questions feel free to give me ring at my direct number 801 204 4694 or shoot me an email, kswistak@backcountry.com.
