    PhD Superior Sock

After months of testing different socks on the skin track, Backcountry Gearheads decided on the perfect combination of durability, breathability, odor-resistance, and comfort to create the Backcountry x Smartwool PhD Superior Sock. Constructed from naturally odor-resistant Merino wool with mesh zones to promote maximum breathability, this lightweight, backcountry-ready sock features extra cushioning on the heel to reduce friction in the boot and low-profile shin cushioning for protection on the downhill. Two different elastics provide a no-slip performance fit, with more durable yarn in the high-wear zones for better longevity.

    Fit my needs perfectly!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I'm not really an outdoorsy type, but I do commute by e-bike. E-Assist on in the cold early morning, then I get a workout on the way home by NOT using E-assist and taking a longer route home. My problem? Those cold early mornings. I'm headed to a well heated building at 15-18 MPH with dressy pants. When it's too cold, I'll throw on my rain pants for the trip and that keeps the cold wind off my legs. And when it's warm enough, I don't add anything. But there's a space in between where I'm reluctant to throw on the rain pants for an 8 minute trip, but if I don't, I get seriously chilled.

These socks bridge that gap! They're light enough that I don't overheat during the day in the well heated building, but heavy enough under slacks to keep the chill off for the ride to work.

    Good touring sock!

These socks are awesome, and perfect for those long ascents! Be warned, these aren't a thick sock meant to keep your feet toasty on subzero days, but instead made for those long climbs up a sunny face.

    My go-to ski sock

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

My skiing tends to be a mix of both touring and resort skiing, but I use this sock exclusively now whenever I put on my boots. I like a very thin sock so my feet can breathe and stay warm (note - if you've always had cold feet AND use thick socks, change it up!). These socks do the trick, and I appreciate the extra cushioning on the heel for the long days when I worry about blisters. Also, who doesn't love rockin' the goat?!
