Backcountry x NEMO Chigu Sleeping Bag

We know a thing or two about spending nights under the open sky—it is in our name, after all—and if there's one thing we're unwilling to sacrifice in the way of portability, it's comfort. That's why we've teamed up with NEMO, well known for its propensity for luxurious campground experiences. The Chigu is wider than your average mummy bag, particularly at the waist and knees, giving side-sleepers like us the wiggle room we deserve, and because it's modeled after NEMO's Riff, its backpacking-forward design means it's still lightweight and packable enough for longer excursions.

Keeping Warm in Winter-like Lands

Familiarity:
I've used it several times
Size Bought:
regular

I was given this product by Backcountry, but this review is my personal opinion. The first two times I used this sleeping bag was while car camping in the Tetons and backpacking King's Peak (Utah highest peak at around 13500 feet). Though it was September, it was cold. (FYI, I'm from Texas. The weather where I was using the sleeping bag was like winter where I'm from.) The Tetons was in the low 40s. The bag was perfect for that condition. However, it felt a little tight b/c I had my sleeping pad in the bag. On the other hand, the spoon shape allowed for my hands to be comfortably in the bag when fully zipped up, which is not the case in my mummy bag. When I used it to backpack up Kings Peak, it was in the low-mid 30s. I used it over 2 nights. The first night, my feet got cold. For the second night, I slipped down to the bottom of the bag b/c lots of bag tends to have a thicker layer at the bottom to keep the feet warm. Thank goodness it was the case b/c my feet were fine during the second night. I slept like a baby and was rested for the hike home.

WARM - When you need it most!

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Height:
6' 5"
Weight:
205

We took this camping in Eastern UT. The temps dipped down to the mid 30's our first two nights using these. Night one I bundled up on clothing layers expecting to have to shiver through the night instead I was SWEATING the entire night. Night 2 I slept without any extra clothing and was nice and warm. So this baby can keep you toasty through early Spring season weather. It's a mummy bag - so be prepared for that (you either love that cozy feeling or it's the worst thing ever as you toss and turn all night) - but if you need a mummy bag to keep you warm through 3 seasons of weather AND you want some additional features (hello double zipper and blanket draft insert!) you are in the right place!

Happy Side Sleeper

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Size Bought:
Regular

I'm a notorious side sleeper who has been confined to a mummy bag since I was a young boy. Tried square bags but they let too much of a draft in. When I found of Backcountry partnered with Nemo I had to do some research. I pulled the trigger and am not disappointed. I'm about to head up into the Catskills for a couple of nights and just for a comfort trial I spent a night in my yard in less than ideal conditions. It's comfortable, just as compact as my old mummy, yet lighter. The vents do their job and I was able to effortlessly sleep on my side without feeling like everything in the bag was twisted and knotted. Very pleased costumer and will continue buying Backcountry collaborative products.

Warm and Light

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I was lucky enough to be one of the Gearheads tasked with giving ideas to our product team and NEMO to help design this bag, and also got to mess around with it during a photoshoot a few months back. I love NEMO already and it was a no-brainer to build a bag with their help. The spoon shape helps you stay warm while still cutting weight, but isn't as constricting as a traditional mummy. We went with a synthetic fill to help beginner backpackers not have to worry about moisture as much, while also keeping the cost down, and were still able to keep it light! Also the extra vents in the top allow for easy heat dumping in the middle of the night without having to expose your whole body, freeze, and have to warm the bag all up again. Starting out backpacking? Here's the bag for you!
