    Pfeifferhorn Jacket

The Backcountry x Flylow Pfiefferhorn Jacket was born from our 20-plus years of collective experience as Backcountry Gearheads, the long winter days we spend touring in the Wasatch Mountains, and the product design expertise of Flylow. A pillar in our touring collection, this shell is built around Polartec's NeoShell membrane, which shields against everything from biting winter winds to wet spring storms with boosted breathability for back-to-back transitions on the days when the powder is too deep to call it quits and the solitary gloom of a dawn patrol gives way to a brightening winter morning.

NeoShell is a convective membrane, meaning it actively expels excess heat and moisture without requiring an internal accumulation of either. Those gains in moisture management and breathability during periods of exertion (read: earning turns) do entail barely perceptible tradeoffs in windproofness; however, Polartec still credits the Pfeifferhorn's NeoShell as 99.9% windproof, but the added benefits of increased breathability recommend the material for applications like touring, when reducing the risk of clammy moisture accumulation between transitions can make all the difference.

Including a membrane in a touring jacket is an obvious choice, but when we provided our feedback to Flylow, our goal was to identify problems we have with the status quo and solve them with innovative solutions. For example, women's touring jackets often have smaller pockets, making it impractical to easily stash our skins out of the elements during descents. The Pfeifferhorn features larger pockets that fit skins to keep them warm between laps so the glue stays sticky and transitions are quick and easy. The pockets are also higher to avoid a backpack's waist belt, eliminating a common barrier to pocket access in another win for convenient transitions. An athletic, articulated fit is a final confirmation of the Pfiefferhorn's touring pedigree, and we asked Flylow to cut the jacket a bit trimmer than the typical alpine-specific models for a sleeker profile on the skin track.

    Breathable

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: medium
    • Height: 5'8"
    • Weight: 135lbs

I have only tested this jacket. I wore it in a storm and in warmer weather, to test the breath-ability. It was great for both! I used it on a sunnier day and I stayed comfortable while skinning uphill. So, it's got my vote. I like the fit of the jacket in a medium, but like the bibs in the small. I'm wearing the medium bibs in this photo. I am a schmedium though, which makes it hard to fit me in general.

It's very comfortable and quiet, which is important when you are ski touring, since you are moving so much in the otherwise quiet mountains.

I'm one of those people that doesn't intend on buying new jackets but somehow I end up with a couple new ones every season. They all serve a purpose but most are always missing something. So far the Backcountry x Flylow Pfiefferhorn has met all my needs as a backcountry skiing shell. The athletic fit and length are my favorite parts of the jacket. It's long enough that I can wear a harness with it and snow doesn't creep up my backside. The pit zips are extra big for when I get too hot while touring (which is all the time) and the hood is helmet compatible. So far it has withstood PNW weather and hasn't wetted out on me. Really happy with this shell!

    Spring Spring Spring!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is the perfect spring skiing shell! When it's 40 and sunny on the mountain all you need is this shell and a t-shirt. Very cute and perfect fit for skiers or snowboarders.

    Show STOPPER

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Love this light jacket, smart design, cool style, great price and has enough features to make it a legitimate contender, but simple enough for practical use in (and out) of the backcountry...STOPS water, STOPS wind, STOPS heat & moisture buid-up (this describes what NeoShell really is--very breathable and protective at the same time). I'm between sizes and the smaller of the 2 worked when I was touring and didn't have puffy layers under to speak of, just some lighter thinner insulating ones; when at the resort, I felt I needed the larger of the 2 sizes to have room to layer without any constriction. I'd go for the larger of the 2 in order to keep it versatile if you're looking for one shell that does most everything.

    Great functionality, super waterproof!

I got this a few weeks ago. I've taken it on some test tours and it's been great to layer with. The pitzips are easy to use with mittens on, so you can dump heat quickly, and the greatly oversized pockets are great to stash all the things from cameras to ski skins. My only qualm is that the inside phone pocket is on the right and not the left, which makes it a little awkward for right handed people like me to access my phone, but would be great for all you lefties out there. The arms are nice and long, as is the waist, which is so important when wearing over a down jacket so the down doesn't poke out. The hood fits great over a helmet, and was a major reason why I bought it. Yesterday, I took it out to Park City Mountain Resort where it was raining at the base, and snowing up top. I had to call it early when everything else had mostly soaked through, but this jacket was still mostly dry by the time I went in. The only spot rain was not beading up and sliding off was where my backpack chest straps hit the jacket, which is far better than expected. When I got in, I checked where my shoulder straps hit and even that was still dry. My helmet, goggles and neck buff were pretty dry too because I had my hood up over my helmet most of the day. My pants and gloves however, were completely soaked all the way through.

Attached photo for sizing. Also because it's probably one of my favorite photos. There was about a 6" of new snow on the ground, but conditions were so wet I barely broke through.

    Great functionality, super waterproof!

    Great snowboarding jacket!

I used this while snowboarding in Park City, UT and loved it! I prefer riding with a shell such as this so I can layer and control my temperature better. I was not worried about getting wet as this protected well, even with falls! I loved the length of it, I do not love shorter snowboarding jackets and like that this covered my butt. Also loved the pink color, super cute!

    Great snowboarding jacket!

    Quality without the cost

Fantastic shell. I love how long it is. The taped zippers look and feel like the arc'teryx shell zippers. I have used several Arc'teryx and Patagonia touring shells, and I found this one to perform just as well.

    Favorite touring shell!

Lightweight, breathable, keeps you dry even when it's dumping, and has a flattering cut! My favorite features are the length (no dealing with snow finding its way up the back of your jacket when you lean over) and the oversized pockets. And I love the beautiful "Blush" color option!

    Lives up to the hype

This jacket is an incredible asset for earning your turns. You can tell how high quality the material is because it moves with you while keeping you dry and temperature-regulated. It's a pretty fresh fit, too. Definitely recommend spending some extra bucks for this one.

    Best Ski Shell Yet!!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I have a closet full of some of the top ski shells ( TNF Purist and Fuse Brigandine, Arcteryx Shashka, Flylow Vixen 2.0 etc), but all I want to wear is the Backcountry Pfeifferhorn. Of all my shells, this one is by far the most comfortable, even more than the super stretchy and similar Flylow Vixen 2.0.

This jacket was designed by a collaboration of Gearheads and Flylow and they absolutely nailed it. First of all, it feels wonderful. The fabric is super soft and light and it feels really comfortable when wearing it. The pockets are nice and big - large enough to put gloves or skins in and are placed high enough to be harness compatible, but still low enough to put your hands in them.

It is super breathable because of the large pit zips, large ventilated pockets, and the Polartec NeoShell membrane. It also only weighs a pound, so it is very light.

The fit is true to size, but slim. I am primarily a resort skier, so I sized up to accommodate room for layers. Even sizing up, it is flattering.

The color offerings are on POINT, especially with the Rose Pink being one of the hottest colors in outerwear this season.

This jacket was designed for touring, but it is definitely still great for the resort. I run hot, so I'm super appreciative of its light weight and breathablilty. In addition to being extremely breathable, it is also very waterproof. I was skiing in wet snow in December at Canyons Resort and stayed completely dry and comfortable.

I highly recommend this jacket for skiing or any high output winter activity. I love it and am glad to answer any questions you have about it 801-204-4562 or amcclary@backcountry.com .

I've worn this jacket on several tours, and it made a great first impression. The first day I wore it it was at least 20 degrees and dumping pretty dense snow. I ended up wearing the jacket on the uptrack to stay dry, and I was truly impressed with how breathable it was, and I how I remained dry, even after 4+ hours in the backcountry.

The fit is a little more relaxed than a lot of the other touring-specific pieces I've tried, which provides a lot of versatility for layering. I like that the cut is a bit longer and more freeride-esque, too, because it really keeps the snow and wind out. Definitely fits true to size!

    The PERFECT Touring Jacket!

This is the ultimate touring jacket. It's insanely light and has breathable material that allows you to sweat without freezing! Backcountry worked with Flylow and our Gearheads to design meaningful product features that will greatly enhance your backcountry experience. For instance, this jacket has oversized pockets to stash your skins, and keep them warm while doing laps all day! The jacket also has a high collar, is helmet compatible, and has DWR treatment to keep you dry all day long.

      The PERFECT Touring Jacket!
