If there's one thing every avid outdoor enthusiast has hanging in their gear closet, it's a dependable layering piece like the Backcountry Synthetic Jacket. This one draws inspiration from our previous hybrid version, now with more insulation around the torso to keep you warm, but still body-mapped for breathability. Clean lines make a minimalist appearance if you're simply wearing it around town, while the slim fit slides right under a shell if you're out in stormy weather.

Good jacket, misleading sizing
- Size Bought:
- XL
- Height:
- 6' 1"
- Weight:
- 190
Got this jacket for cold days at the crag and approaches with some light bushwhacking. I followed the guidance of the reviews and item description and sized up to XL. I was looking for a slim fitting layering piece with minimal bulk and this jacket ended up being bigger than expected. In hindsight I would have stuck with a L. Will probably be returning the XL and hope L comes back into stock soon. Otherwise this seems like a solid jacket, even with the zipper being on the left side. I don't think the sizing runs small, it just has a slim fitting which may not work for some bigger guys. If you're a lean build and looking for a slim fit jacket, don't size up.

I actually just opened this up and have only worn around the house. It’s been almost 90 degrees here lately so it might be a bit before I can get a true sense for the quality and warmth of the jacket. That said it’s a very sharp looking and good fitting jacket, perhaps runs a bit small. Will be good for layering underneath a shell but not a ton of room for much more than a flannel or crewneck sweatshirt underneath. I’m 5’7”, 165lbs and the medium seems like a comfy fit. Compares more closely to the north face ventrix but also similar to the Patagonia nano air with more insulation, although a bit stiffer material. My biggest gripe is that the zipper is on the left rather than the right like every other brand. I have another Backcountry jacket with the zipper on the left and it makes no sense to me, will take some getting used to. Every other brand I’ve worn, TNF, Patagonia, Mountain Hardwear, Stio, 686, Burton, etc. all have the zipper on the right for mens wear. That said, I’m excited to get out and start using it soon.

I followed reviewers advice and sized up from XL to XXL and the jacket fits perfect. Entirely similar to the Patagonia Nano Air Hoody with MUCH friendlier price tag. Not sure why the zipper is opposite the usual zipper orientation. I had a tiny bit of trouble with it getting stuck at first but after some careful considerations I am now enjoying the jacket with no troubles. Since the zipper can be opened from the top or bottom one should just keep that in mind when dealing with the zipper on this jacket.

Very strange fit
- Familiarity:

- M & L

I'm a slim medium and ordered this both in medium and large based on reviews indicating it runs small. The medium length was good all around, the chest fit pretty well (maybe a little slimmer than typical medium), but the armpit was really tight and yet the sleeves were quite wide/baggy. The large was definitely too big and long except the armpit, which strangely was uncomfortably tight despite the rest of the jacket being way too big. Overall it seems like this jacket has a disproportionate cut/fit. I returned both. The regular price is also ridiculously high for the fairly basic jacket this is -- I got it on flash sale for $80 and, strange fit aside, I really couldn't justify paying anymore than $125 for it. I suspect Backcountry brand apparel might be intentionally way overpriced so they can do frequent "sales". Questionable quality and pricing = less inclined to consider Backcountry brand apparel in the future.

Pretty good

First, the jacket runs small. I'm 6ft 2in and 205lb and the xxl is a slim but decent fit. Any bigger than me and you're probably not going to fit in this jacket. Overall, the materials and durability feel good. I like the 40g on the back and underarms...a better compromise Tha. The arcteryx or patagonia version. However, the fabric isn't near as soft or packable as the patty nano air, but I like the hood better than the nano air or proton. However, this jacket is NOT very stretchy...will make ice climbing a bit restrictive compared to its competition. I'm a climber and mountaineer and will be using this jacket often. I got it here on sale for $99 and that is am excellent deal! Ant more than $150 and I'd say pony up for the patagonia nano air or arcteryx proton/atom. But, for $99 I have a sweet, comfy jacket who's minor downfalls compared to pricier competition can be ignored. Hoping to put it thru the ringer and not care how badly I destroy it along the way....which probably means this is the right jacket for me

Nice Jacket, Runs Small

- XXL

I ordered this for my husband who fits into an XXL in most brands, including Patagonia. But it definitely fit like an XL. It's too bad, because it's a really nice jacket, but we're sending it back and it's not made in a larger size.

Everyday Wear
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
This is the one jacket I reach for no matter what the weather man says. Warm enough for those chilly morning that make you thankful for heated seat. Tough enough to take a beating while out and about. But most of all it is sleek and comfortable to pair with just about anything in your closet, or maybe laundry basket.
