Looks and feels great, love the slim fit

Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    Fit:True to size
    Size BoughtMedium
    Height6` 3"
    Weight175 lbs

I just received this item today, so can't comment on long term durability. But like other reviewers said, Backcountry seems to have really knocked it out of the park with this one! Unfortunately mine arrived with some marks on the shoulders. They look like oil or dirt or scuff marks, so I'm going to contact BC customer service to work on an exchange. So I knock 1 star off for that, otherwise it would be 5 stars.. But other than that, I really love the fit and style. The fit looks just like it does in the photos: slightly fitted, with enough room for a T shirt, long sleeve T, or your favorite wool base layer underneath. And what's great about it being slightly slim fitted is that it looks very sleek and stylish for around town, but then you can easily throw a shell or even a lightweight insulated jacket on top for more warmth, like an Atom LT or First Light Stretch. I love functional pieces that do double duty and can be worn around town, but also out in the sticks for my adventures. The thumbholes are AWESOME! Thank you Backcountry for adding thumbholes! And if you decide to wear it without using the thumbholes, it still looks like regular sleeves and regular wrist cuffs. Really nice! The hood is nice and comfortable. It's slightly fitted and doesn't droop or sit too baggy on your head. The interior fleece of the jacket is very soft and comfy. And having not only 2 zippered hand pockets but ALSO a zippered chest pocket is just straight awesome! Zippers are smooth and easy to operate. Stitching looks solid inside and out. I'm 6'3" tall, 175 lbs (tall and thin) and the Medium fits me well. If I could change anything, I'd add an extra inch or two in length to both the torso and the sleeves, but it still looks and feels very good as is, this is just me being a tall person. For everyone else it's probably perfect. I would definitely recommend this feature packed piece. I will come back at a later time and re-review once Backcountry sends me an exchanged piece and I've put it through the wringer. But so far, good initial impressions.

If I were only built like a model....

Very nice hoodie, well made. But definitely intended for a tall or slim fit, not shorter and stockier builds. Had to return it, afraid to get the large as I suspect it will go halfway to my knees.

I like a more technical fit so the Medium works great for me. I have no doubt that someone with my build could wear a Large if they want a more relaxed fit. That being said this thing is warm. I used it to ski tour on an overcast day in the mid 20's and it was too hot. I would think this would be a great Alaskan mid layer. However, for resort storm shredding this layer was perfect. It kept me warm and dry until the last chair. This jacket simply rocks.

    Awesome Fleece

I've been wearing this fleece as an active piece and it works great! The mountain that I broke this piece in on is the namesake of the jacket. Mount Timpanogos is the 2nd highest peak in the Wasatch and if a local favorite. My buddy Tommy and I choose to do a more technical route up the front face that is also known as the Everest Ridge where a group of Utahns trained to climb Mt Everest on. The Route goes from Utah valley to the summit at 11,750 ft. With nearly 7,000 ft of elevation change in under 5 miles you break a sweat, I choose to use this jacket as a mid-layer as we were moving the entire time and needed something that would keep me warm and comfortable while moving. This jacket did a phenomenal job at just that. I've continued to use this jacket on lots of hikes as its a great piece and still looks good for when you're in town. The thumb holes that this jacket has been amazing and keeps your hands much warmer on those chilly days. All in all an awesome jacket that is comfy and is a workhorse!

Only wish? It was about an inch or two longer. Light and breathable when needed, yet keeps you warm and dry when the temps drop. Love the thumb holes and fleece lining. Functionality pairs perfectly with style. A multi-sport piece for any adventure.

The Timpanogos is more jacket than midlayer which I like a lot. The look is great as a stand alone jacket without looking overly "outdoorsy" like some tech fleeces. I really like this piece for everyday wear at the ski resort, on the hill as a midlayer and around the base area at work. With all the features I like from so many companies packed into one. The hood fits nicely under a helmet, thumb loops are out of the way when you don't want them and don't pull down on the arm when you use them. Pockets are in perfect location and all large enough to hold a phone (S9). A face fabric that doesn't catch on everything and inner fabric thats soft against the skin. Its been perfect for backcountry touring over just a baselayer and fits nicely under a puffy and shell for resort snowboarding. I'm excited to put this to the test alpine climbing this spring if it ever stops snowing. No pilling yet might be too soon to tell for long term durability.

I generally run pretty warm, but on days when temps dip to the teens this layer has been my go to touring layer. The fleece wicks moisture if you're working up a sweat, but will keep you warm when you turn and head downhill. The DWR is a nice touch, but I wouldn't wear it in anything more than a drizzle, but it's perfect for when there is a light snow on the way uphill.

I can honestly say that this is the best jacket I have ever worn. The Backcountry Brand team clearly took the time to ensure the Timp was one of the best tech fleeces on the market. After a long search to find the best tech fleece for touring, it came through with the win. The versatility of this jacket ensures you are comfortable in all conditions, whether it being an aggressive tour or walking around town on a chilly morning.

I'm so impressed with the comfort, quality, and versatility of this piece that it has quickly become one of my all time favorites. It looks great and fits like a second skin. The uses for this hoodie are endless. I wear it traveling, both driving and flying, as a ski base layer under a shell, apres, around the house. It goes on. Now that Spring is here, it functions as a light jacket, perfect with a tee underneath. I've also washed this piece several times (hang dry) and it comes out like new with virtually no wear.

This is great feedback, Greg! So glad that you love your Timp Tech Fleece hoodie!

    Warm, Comfy and Ninja Approved

The Timpanogos fits not like a glove and is not baggy. Nor does it give me a muffin top or make me look like I’m wearing a box. It fits perfect. I’m 5’9” and 160lbs. Went with the medium in Army Green. It’s extra stretchy and ultra soft on the inside. Light and fairly thin but still holds warmth. All the pockets have zippers, which I love, and both the lower pockets have that super soft fleece to cuddle up those cold hands in. The upper chest pocket can be a great spot to keep your cookies or extra socks. I think what I like most about this fleece, is the hood. It cups the noggin with delicate perfection. When the whole package is zipped all the way up, ninja mode is turned on as much of your face can be stowed away behind a curtain of protection. I wore it the other day on a mild, spring afternoon out snowboarding. I had Backcountry’s Spruces Merino base layer underneath and a shell on top. Nailed the layering.

Got this as an additional layer for spring time climbing, but when it showed up I realized I can probably wear this everyday for work as well. I got a Large size, I’m 5’10 and weigh 175lbs with slightly broad shoulders and chest from climbing - and it fits beyond perfect. Not baggy, but comfortable. I’ve had a tough time finding a stretchy layer for climbing that actually had some wind blocking properties without being weird in the shoulders or length. This jacket nailed all of these for me. The pockets are also nice and big, which I’m finding is coming in handy while traveling. I got the granite/pavement color, and the gold hits are really nice with the grey. The hood is fairly large and fits over my climbing helmet. It also zips up above my lips when I have my helmet on which has been great for the wind. Honestly have yet to find a bad thing about this jacket. The versatility is quite nice. Zero regrets.

I find that this fabric drinks water and isn't very wind resistant. Is it possible that the DWR was applied poorly or not at all?

HI Jordan, This style does not have a DWR application, we'll get this corrected.

What's the difference with the Pressure Drop Fleece in terms of warmth and windproofing?

Alan, the Pressure Drop and this Timpanogos Tech are made of the same materials and proportions of Nylon, polyester, and spandex. They will be similar if not the same in terms of windproofing warmth. There are differences in the styles as this one has a hood and one pocket on the chest while the Pressure Drop has two chest pockets and no hood. Consider what you will be using this for and if you need a hood, this is the way to go. If only using as a baselayer, then the Pressure Drop might be what you need!

How would this stack up against something like the OR Ferrosi hoody?

Hey Chuck, They're similar in weight, stretch, and silhouette but their use is slightly different. The Ferrosi is a softshell meant for light wind/weather protection and abrasion resistance but doesn't have any insulation of it's own. The Timpanogos is a hard-faced fleece meant for warmth and lighter wind resistance. You'd most likely wear them in similar climates/temps however they are built for slightly different purposes. The two together could also be a great system where you could weather Timpanogos for warmth while moving and if it gets a little windier you could toss the Ferrosi on top for more weather protection without the loss of mobility. Hope that helps! Ben

Is this jacket windproof at all?

Hi Ryan, This jacket will be more wind resistant than a traditional fleece because it is made with a hard face construction, however it is not a windproof item. Ben
