Why We Built The Slickrock Bike Short

When we're riding technical lines in Moab or Sedona, we need a short that won't restrict movement and that can keep us comfortable through the tightest sections. We built the Slickrock Bike Shorts using a stretchy synthetic blend, providing excellent freedom of movement so we can maneuver through the Porcupine Rim Notch, or just the line for a post-ride burger and shake.

I love this material. It is light weight and breathes as good as any MTB short out there, which has been essential this hot humid east coast summer. It also is more durable than my YETI Teller shorts (my previous favorite for high temps). The plastic belt closure feels a little small and cheap, but has performed very well. The ventilation holes in the leg turn white when close to my leg, which some might not like, but I am glad for the breathability. My only grip with these shorts, and what keeps them from being an awesome deal at this price for a hot weather riding short is the pockets are right on top of the my legs when I am riding. No way I am keeping anything in them on a ride. Please put them on the sides so there is no risk of the contents stabbing me as I pedal. The empire shorts have very nice side pockets, and I don't need hand pockets and side pockets.

For an inexpensive, light, pair of shorts with few pockets, these were great. I use them for cycling mainly but they also work in the pool, around the house. Love them. Nice colour, I went with Burnt Orange.

Bought these shorts because of the light weight material and price. Unfortunately they have been a bit of a disaster. The seems on both pockets have opened up rendering the pockets useless and due to the light stretchy material the crotch gets hung up on my saddle every time I lean back a little. Love backcountry but these shorts, not so much.

My husband wanted these shorts to 1. Store his phone in a zippered pocket and 2. ride a more comfortable, shorter pant for long days on the XC bike. Loved his first pair, so bought all three colors. They really look nice, have a nice material, and meet his two goals. Previous reviews said they ran small, and after buying a large and XL, decided to go with the XL. So, would recommend you buy a size up.

I purchased to pair and am really digging the fit. Not too baggy or tight and not too long. Not sure about durability yet as I've only worn them twice so far but I'm hoping for the best. My favorite MTB shorts I own so far.

These shorts are much better length than many other MTB shorts such as Patagonia, Pearl Izumi, Fox, etc. which are all down to my knees and I don't have short legs for my height (6'0" and wear a 33" or 34" length jeans). They do seem to run a little small in the waist as I normally wear a medium in most other shorts such as (Lululemon size M, Eddie Bauer size 32", Patagonia board shorts I wear a 33", etc.) but in these I was a large, especially since they go over a traditional cycling short or at least over a liner short. Would like to see more colors as they were sold out of the gray.

I wear these all the time! Biking, climbing, getting in the river, and for cocktail lounging. These are very light, and really stretchy. On the saddle they feel great when paired with a solid Chamois. These are a sweet hot weather short, as well as a great multi-sport short (feels good under a climbing harness too). The only thing I would change would be a more backwards oriented pocket for keeping your phone, snack, or tool secure while riding, but with the zippered pockets you won't loose any goods.

I wear a size 42 waist and the XXL was way too small. Could not even close at the top. These run way too small

I got a few pair for $55(ish) and after paying $75 for crappy Ether 9s (Zoic) I'm ecstatic with the Slickrock short. Inseam perfect, material is durable and comfortable. Closure works quite well and I'm glad there's no snap or button at the fly...the Ether 9s broke on first ride. I've logged 100mi and a few 1000s of feet with these shorts A+++

I like the fitted but not too slim cut and the weight and texture of the stretch material used. Well suited for moderate trail riding, but you'd probably want something more durable looking if you are riding with a full set of pads. I have a 36 waist and was able to wear with a padded liner short. I don't love the use of a small strip of Velcro at the waist closure. Obviously this only is meant to hold things in place long enough to close the belt, but it's not even really up to that task if your waist is making use of the stretch to fit. A simple snap or button would be better or just a more substantial amount of Velcro. Overalli I think these will be my go to shorts for riding this summer.

Great shorts!

Lifelong roadie here, these were my first pair of MTB shorts after my riding buddies wouldn't stop making fun of me showing up to the trailhead in lycra... I like everything about them, except they are about 1" too long for me (the Zoic Ether 9" are perfect in that sense). And I also don't love the velcro waist closure instead of a button. Other than that, they are well-made and lightweight, and they have been comfortable and durable. I used my actual measurements for waist and hip and they fit true to size. Highly recommended if you are looking for some nice shorts that won't break the budget!

I was given this product by Backcountry, but this review is my personal opinion. I got to demoed last year's version of this bike short and this version they improved it by fixing the 1 bad thing about the previous version. The added built-in belt-lock has helped tremendously with the fix. Once again, the short's material feels amazing (I can sleep in this material) and really light weight. The material dries really quick, so when I got wet on my ride, I was dried by the time I got back to my car. I rode in the mountains early in the MTB season when there was still some snow and mud. When my ride was over, I was covered in mud all over my skin and shoes, but no mud was found on these shorts. I was amazed!

Big fan of these, material is stretchy and very lightweight. Full on summer isn't here yet but I rode on an 85degree day and they felt a lot better than the other heavier shorts I own. slightly shorter inseam fits a little above the knee on me. measured 10in inseam on size large. only issue I could see is the pockets don't feel super durable, if you ride with your phone or something heavy in there. will see how they hold up

I took a chance on these shorts since it seems I constantly need a new pair. The fabric is great. Stretchy and light. It will not protect when you crash but it will be really nice on the marathon XC rides on hot summer days. The fit is excellent and seems to match well with the sizing chart- at least for the medium shorts. (I wear a size 34 in Fox Ranger and a size 32 in the TLD skyline shorts for reference). I like the style. The pockets are nicely done and my giant phone fits well. the zippers are reasonable quality. Stitching looks good. The silicone keeps the shorts in place at the back of the waist. So far so good but-- A couple of thoughts. Since stretchy MTB shorts often fail at the buttons, Backcountry opted for a velcro closure where a button usually sits. No buttons. No big deal- just wasn't expecting that. There is also an integrated woven belt with a very flimsy feeling (but so far effective) plastic clasp. Looks like it came off my Jansport backpack from middle school. Also no big deal for me since it still looks OK (Jansport is cool) and the shorts fit me so well that the belt is not needed to hold things in place. As long as the velcro / plastic buckle closure system lasts I have an awesome pair of shorts. I'm very happy with the purchase and performance and at this point I would buy them again. But I took off 1 star because I'm a little concerned about the long-term durability of the closure system. I'll try to circle back in 6 months with a longer term review

Hey there, the small should work for you. the fabric is very stretchy.

Do these come with a liner?

Hey Andrew, These shorts do not come with a liner. We do make a covert liner bib short that you could buy to compliment the slick rock bike short.
