Why We Built The Backcountry Notchtop GORE-TEX Active Bib Pant

Because we know the snow rides better when we work for it, we made the touring-ready Notchtop Bib Pant. We trust GORE-TEX to keep us protected from harsh winter conditions, so we chose the versatile GORE-TEX Active for its reliable weather-proofing and its sporty breathability. Unlike our bomber Cottonwoods kit, this bib was made specifically for high-activity tours. The shell is soft, packable, and incredibly lightweight, and we outfitted it with full-length zippers to efficiently dump heat or quickly swap layers.

Freak sizing

I really was stoked when these showed up. The 3layer material is great feeling. The cut of the pants also looks really promising. But the size medium I ordered makes no sense. I am 5ft-7, about 150lbs. The inseam is too short and the waist is too tight. I thought the sizing for Patagonia is weird, but this takes the cake.

Using these for touring. They are lightweight, breathable, and well-built. For me the sizing is fine. I'm 5-10 about 145 - built like a slimmish trail runner. I normally wear small, however I got the medium because I'm wearing a base and midlayer underneath. I think true to size would have been fine for me if I planned just to wear a baselayer underneath. All in all I'm happy with them; they move well and keep me warm and dry while earning my turns

Awesome fabric, WEIRD fit

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Size Bought:
XL
Height:

Weight:

The gore Tex active fabric on these is stretchy but seems just the right amount of bomber to survive full use in the backcountry. The fit is crazy. I’m 5’6” 180# with typical skier sized legs and I typically fit either a medium if I’m okay with some tightness around the thighs or a large if I want plenty of space. With these I went two sizes up to XL and they’re okay. At XL I have room for my thighs but the calves could fit two full ski boots. The inseam is extremely short. I’m very short and the XL inseam is probably an inch too short for me. The zipper provides convenient access to my belly button and I have to believe was a manufacturing defect.

Poorly designed

I read the reviews here including concerns about design and sizing. Still, I took a shot, hoping for the best. Maybe my body or needs would be different from other reviewers'. But no luck. The material is fantastic and the build quality seems top notch. Everything feels like its high quality. I'm 6'0" and 155-160 lbs. Waist is 32 and chest is 40. I'm a skinny dude and generally wear size Medium ski outwear (pants and jackets) with no difficulty. The legs of these pants fit me fine. I like the roominess without being baggy and I think the length is about right for ski boots. But that's where the good news ends. The bib section here is ridiculously tight. It's like wearing a corset. The material doesn't offer much stretch. I'm pretty skinny and was feeling tightness all around with only a light shirt underneath. I don't think I'd be able to take it with a real layer or two underneath or when breathing heavily. Then there's the side zippers. One side has a pretty great zipper vent option. The zipper runs from the waist to the bottom of the leg. You could easily unzip the top down to dump heat. But on the other side the zipper goes all the way to the top of the bib. This is necessary because you need to unzip in order to get the incredibly tight bib past your legs and hips. But this makes that zipper useless for venting. You can't unzip it from the top because the zipper (a) would start well above where you can reach under a jacket and (b) the bib section kind of fall apart when you unzip it. I guess you could unzip from the bottom but it would be a mess when skiing or skinning with the lower leg unzipped. Sad to say, these are going back.

Needs Serious Sizing Help

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it
Size Bought:
L

I wanted to like these so bad but as others have said the cut makes them unusable and its really unfortunate. I wear a 32x32 normally so I went with a size L, the the legs on these stop a good bit above my ankles. I'm not looking for a super baggy park look by any means but these are basically the capris of bibs, unfortunately I had to send them back. Backcountry if you're listening, add a few inches to the inseam and you've got your self a killer bib On the plus side if you're creek crossing and you fall in, your pants wont get wet!

Not usable as touring pant

Familiarity:

Just as others reported, the sizing is weird, but that didn't stop me from trying. I'm a Large in most other brands, but this one didn't fit at all in Large. I couldn't even get in, let alone close it. I did like the material and also the quality seems quite good, especially given the price, so I ordered a replacement X Large. However, once I was finally able to put on the pants, I noticed an important detail missing which to me is the reason this product doesn't work for me at all: While it has full top to bottom zippers on the left leg, the zipper is not constructed in a way that you can open part of the leg for venting. My other pants (Arc'teryx Rush and OR Hemisphere Bib) have the same material, are twice as expensive, but do have three way zippers. For the Backcountry pants, the only way to vent them is to open the zipper at the very top or the very bottom. That just doesn't make sense for ski touring. I am returning the product.

If you have a slim body type then these pants will work great, just order a size up from what your normal pant waist size is. If you have a bit of a belly then these pants will not work. Other than that I love these pants and I have worn them about 15 days this season so far. The Gore-Tex active fabric is incredible. It's lightweight, very stretchy/flexible, breathable, waterproof and windproof as well. I wore these on a resort day when we had over 24" of new snow and it was dumping the whole time. Stayed completely dry all day. I have worn these while snowmobiling and was very impressed with how well they blocked the wind at speeds of +50mph. Even wore them ice climbing and the tight, flexible fit was perfect. The full length side zippers are a game changer on warm days. A few friends have commented on how nice they were while they were wearing Arc'teryx bibs with much less ventilation options. Anyways can't reccomend these pants enough!

Great pants but I returned it

Size Bought:
M
Height:

Purchased size M, fit pretty good as a spring skiing pants - can only put in a pair of legging or smartwool base layer. The reason I returned it is the calf section - it is notoriously wide, wider than my size L arcteryx Sabre LT bib pants. With the slim fit thigh section, the whole pants look weird. You can tell that in the model picture. They really should narrow down the calf section.

Weird sizing as people have said. The upper torso bib part is very narrow. If you are tall and skinny these fit great and are a good deal! if you have belly or a larger waist line they are probably not a good option. Great deal for the money if they fit.

Poorly conceived

The build and construction on these pants are generally okay, but whoever designed them seems to have a misinformed notion of human anatomy and the distribution of size and shapes of humans. I usually wear a medium for most things, but purchased the large version of these pants for a little extra room, and I'm glad I did because any smaller would have been insufficient and restrictively slim. I measured the inseam of the pants to be 30", which I would expect to find on a size small or extra small. Consequently, the legs do not entirely cover my boots and any amount of powder will cause snow to go up into the legs. The zipper for the crotch is in a very questionable position, with the top being located somewhere near my belly button, and the bottom being located where I would expect the top of a normal zipper to be. I need to wear the suspenders as loosely as possible to try to compensate for the short inseam and odd zipper placement. On the positive side, they do seem to be constructed well and I do like the placement and size of the pockets on these pants. While they can technically be used without major consequence, there are enough negative things to say about these pants that I would not recommend them to anyone over 200 lbs or taller than 5' 6".
