    Murdock 850 Down Jacket

The winter weather in Utah's Wasatch Mountains can turn from bearable to frigid in the blink of an eye, so we never hit the skin track without an insulated jacket in our packs. Part of Backcountry's touring collection, the Women's Murdock 850 Down Jacket was designed with input from Gearheads to create a warm, fully-featured, and impressively packable down jacket. Boasting a high fill rating, the lofty down insulation efficiently locks in body heat without adding bulk and easily compresses to a size that fits well in any pack, keeping us comfortable during sub-zero dawn patrols, gusty transitions on the summit of Murdock Peak, and frigid descents into untouched cold smoke.

We designed the Murdock to seamlessly layer under the Backcountry x Flylow Pfiefferhorn Jacket, but made it durable and weather-resistant enough to be worn as a standalone when it's flurrying on the skin track. Its rip-stop outer material can withstand snags from those early-season shrubs that haven't yet been completely covered by snow, and is down-proof to prevent any stray feathers from escaping. Water-resistant zippers keep moisture from permeating into our layers, while the adjustable hood, cuffs, and hem create a barrier that no chilly air can bypass.

Unlike most down jackets, the Murdock actually features zippered side vents so we can easily flush heat, preventing a sweaty chill. All the zipper pulls and adjustment tabs are glove-friendly, and a plethora of pockets complete this toasty package. Two fleece-lined hand pockets and a chest pocket keep our essentials close at hand, while an internal medial pocket and large mesh pocket accommodate other items like a phone and goggles.

I love this coat and it's been on many adventures with me so far. I have used this on cold ski days when a shell just isn't warm enough in Alaska, Utah, and Colorado. I've never thought it too bulky or restrictive while skiing either. I have broad shoulders so I was surprised to find that it fit perfectly. I've also used this for winter backpacking/camping and it's a dream on nights that are below zero. It's not the lightest coat to pack and carry but it's been worth the extra weight when I need to be warm. I would recommend this coat to anyone that does a lot of cold weather outdoor adventures! Bring it!

Got this for my gf as a Christmas present. It is really nice quality and fits her great. Only problem is the zipper. Had to return the first one because the zipper jammed on the very first time trying it on. Kind of a bummer, but was able to get a replacement. Unfortunately that one has a funky zipper, too. It does work though and not worth it returning again. I would hope for the price point this is at they would have not skimped on a quality zipper...

This is a wonderfully puffy down jacket, the 850 fill feels substantial and warm. I brought this on a few winter hikes and it got pretty toasty. This would be a great jacket if youre not exerting too much energy (like a belay parka), but it also works if youre doing light activity. I am typically a XS or S in down jackets and the small fit perfectly (I wouldn't want it any smaller or bigger). It is a more slim fit compared to other big puffys I have owned but this helps keep in the warmth. I love the various pockets on the jacket as well as the liner that makes the arms cuffs feel more fitted. Overall, this is a wonderful puffy and it has done a good job of keeping me warm on chilly winter days.

I've done everything but sleep in this jacket since receiving it and I can confirm that it keeps me toasty warm! True to size, I've been loving the amount of pockets this jacket offers as well as the thumb holes that keep my wrists and palms safe from the elements. The fleece-lined pockets really help to keep my fingers warm when I forget my gloves at home. I ordered my jacket in black, so it goes with all of my wintry outfit choices and is as comfortable as it is stylish.

In addition to zippered hand pockets, there is a zippered chest and drop pocket on the inside and another for a ski pass in the chest. There are vents for when I get warm from activity and it covers my bum nicely. Personally, I haven't found that the sleeves are too short. Can wait to use it more next winter!

I purchased this coat for my wife. It is definitely more cut than other down coats which looks great on her. It does fit a little snuggly though. The addition of the heat vents is a great feature lacking on most other down coats.

What size did you buy for your wife. My daughter is similar build so I'm trying to figure out if I should get the XL or the XXL

Gift For Partner: I'm 5'8" 160 lbs. and the medium, while it was well fitted to my frame left no room for layers. The loft was low which I thought did not suit the price point of the jacket. This is definitely a "lifestyle" around town jacket designed more on style than function. The main zipper seemed poor quality, was hard to line up, giving me a hard time about 1 out of 3 uses. Perhaps this was a one-off and a different zipper would have performed better. Honestly, the price point seems very high for the quality of this jacket and its components. The material feels cheap (although probably reasonably durable). And, while low loft does not always equate to low warmth, this jacket was thinner on the warmth scale than I was looking for or that I thought was reasonable for the price point. Compared to other jackets in its price range, you could get much nicer quality or much more useful technical features and certainly more warmth. I will not be trying the large, I will be looking for a different down jacket altogether. If you find it on sale, I could see it being a worthwhile piece of gear.

I love this jacket! I wore it in Utah and New York during the winter, it is so cute and versatile. I am on the shorter side so it is hard for me to find a parka that I like because they are all so long, this jacket (although not a parka) fits me like a shorter parka that for me is the perfect length. It covers my butt which I like. The navy color is so cute and can be worn with anything! The lined pockets are amazing and so toasty! I love all the pockets they jacket has including the chest pockets. Also like that the zippers are the minimalist ones that are the same color as the coat and are hidden in a way. The only negative thing I have to say about this jacket is that the sleeves are a bit short, even for me, which makes the fabric with thumb holes unusable. Other than that, love it!

I love this jacket for just around town. It's super warm and on the long side which I love. It's not something I would take backpacking because of the weight, but it's perfect for walking my dog, hanging out with friends, and just being outside. The sleeves are slightly short which is why I gave it the four stars, but the black stretch cuff underneath keeps my wrists warm. Overall, a great jacket!

I read all reviews saying it is a weird fit but purchased it regardless. Now that I have tried it, I found out that everybody was correct saying it is a weird fit. It is too tight around the shoulders and chest but baggy around the waist. The sleeves were right for me but my arms are smaller than average, so I see how other people have had issues with sleeve length and width.

I got this as a gift and have initial reports - Great feeling jacket. Heavy and built well. Long enough to cover the hips, but runs snug on the body and was certainly built for a slimmer person. That said, just choose a size larger than you would expect and you'll have no issues. Great jacket with that aside!

I'm a petite person, and usually when I see reviews saying "this fits small in the shoulders" the garment fits me well. However, this jacket, while nice quality, is sewn with very limited mobility in the shoulders even on me, and I'll be sending it back. It's disappointing, because I love the material and the variety of pockets. The jacket's body is very long on me but the sleeves are too short. I'm 5'4, 110 lbs and got the size S, and the length is more like a parka than a down jacket for layering. Backcountry is on the right track with this jacket's quality, but I hope they'll dial in the fit for next year.

Hey Courtney, I'm so sorry the jacket wasn't the right fit for you. The jacket is designed intentionally to be a longer parka style to keep you nice and toasty in the backcountry. If you're looking for something with more stretch we recommend checking out the Wolverine Cirque insulated jacket. Item BCC00BZ.

Love this jacket. Flattering feminine fit--difficult to find in puffies! The inside pockets are so soft and it feels so good to wear. It is warm and a great price for the down fill. The length keeps you warm if you want to sit on a cold rock or bench or do a lot of leaning over--it keeps you covered. The sleeves are a little short.

Material is great and I like that it zips up high to cover your neck. I usually purchase a L or XL, and for the most part this size fits nicely. I have fairly broad shoulders, wider hips and a smaller waist. Little strange around the shoulders, bunches up higher than I would like but most likely this is due to my shoulders being wider than the fit. The longer length is amazing since you don't find it very often. Very warm and cozy jacket. As with others, my only real complaint is the sleeves. They are short, and if you put your hands through the elastic thumbholes I feel like the jacket is going to rip when I stretch down to touch my toes. If I don't use the thumbholes, the sleeves ride up about 2-3" up my arm. Other than that, it's good to finally see a jacket that has a fitted look and still durable/useable. Not a great fit if you are a curvy lady but better than most jackets on the market for a fitted and long look. Hoping they make a few more colors and longer sleeves in the next batch!

This jacket is beautiful and the cut is very feminine. I ordered this jacket in the Tawny port/dusty cedar and it is lovely. As the previous review, my only complaint is the fit. I am 5ft 8 and always wear a Medium. The medium fits me well but the sleeves are too short and too tight, which result very uncomfortable if you have to wear several layers. I decided to order the large size and the sleeves are better but the body is a little too large, so I am debating if keeping this jacket or not. It is a shame as this is a very high quality jacket and I really love the longer length of the body.

This jacket is one of the best I've ever owned....and I've lived in Wisconsin for 30 years, so I've owned a lot of jackets. I love that this jacket is super warm but not bulky. The little details like a stiffer area on the hood that acts like a brim and the vents show a lot of thought was put into this jacket. My only complaint is the sleeves seem quite short. I originally ordered a small, which fit well in the chest and waist (I'm a 34B and consistently wear size small in tops), but the sleeves looked like 3/4 sleeves on me. I exchanged the small for a medium and the sleeves on the medium are better, but still shorter than I'd like ( I can't wear the thing over my thumb and be able to comfortably bend my arm). The moral of this story is that if you're tall (or even just tall-ish) the cut of this jacket may not work for you. I wish Backcountry would make this in a tall option, so I didn't have to have a jacket that is too big in the body to get sleeves that are long enough to cover my wrists.

Thanks for the awesome review Joanna!

My husband purchased this for me as an early Xmas present and I love it so much. I wanted a warm puffy that didn’t make me look like a snowman and very importantly, covered my tush. This jacket does the trick! It’s super warm, slenderzing and covers what I needed ;). I got an XS and I can still layer under. I also love that you can vent this jacket if you get too hot which was a fun surprise. New favorite jacket for sure.
