Why We Built The Mad Creek Shell

When you're checking off big rides or pedaling deep into the wilderness, be prepared for it all with our Mad Creek Shell. We built this technical layer to let you pursue your favorite trails even when the forecast's looking iffy. We designed the shell with breathable construction that perfectly balances performance with wind and water-resistance. One of our favorite features is the zippered hand pocket, which converts into a stuff sack when you want to store the jacket in a pack.

Not worth the money

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

After wearing this jacket twice, a hole developed at one of the seams. This jacket was not inexpensive and the seam should not have split after two uses.

I?m 5?9 160 and usually a M or L. Apparently I should have ordered an XL. Had to return. Bummed, because it?s great fabric, nice cut.

I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

Bought as a Mother's Day gift. Upsides: she loved the color, the weight, the material, and the features. Downside: sizing runs really small & had to send it back

Amazing Light Layer

Size Bought:
L
Height:
5' 5"
Weight:

I was given this product by Backcountry, but this review is my personal opinion. This is an amazing light weight layer I have been reaching for when leaving the house for any activity. The fabric is light, soundless, and comfortable. The whole jacket can be tucked into the single pocket for easy storage and packing. One of my favorite things about the jacket is the snitched cuffs which ensures the sleeve stay out of your way. The hood is perfect for pulling over a base ball hat as well as a bike helmet. My favorite activity with this jacket so far has been hiking and running, but it is built for mountain biking. Overall it is a great light weight layer for any activity.

Well Done Backcountry

Size Bought:
Small

This jacket was intended to be a lightweight, packable layer when mountain biking, but it's more than that! I noticed myself grabbing this jacket for EVERY active pursuit. Whether it be biking, running, hiking, running errands. This jacket gives you an extra layer of warmth for those brisker mornings/evenings, early Spring days. When it's slightly colder, but not cold enough for a mid-weight jacket-otherwise you'll overheat. Has one pocket on the right side. Perfect for keys, headphones, or doggy poop bags. Favorite Features -Packable -Lightweight -Snitched Cluffs -COLOR (Brandied Melon) -Water Resistant to LIGHT sprinkles -Moisture-wicking fabric to keep me dry from sweat -Silent. Fabric doesn't make any noise Cons -One Pocket. Honestly, the one pocket doesn't bother me. When I'm active, I want to trim weight.. I don't want my pockets filled while running. It's a perfect size for the keys or headphone case. If I need to haul around other things, most likely doing an extreme activity, therefore I have my pack. Well Done Backcountry!

Almost perfect!

The fit, lightweight fabric, packability, AND awesome two-way zip feature is great. This is almost perfect, it just needs hand pockets! Maybe if one of the packable pockets could be convertible as a hand pocket as well, it would only need one more hand pocket on the other side. Or just make it with one packable chest pocket and two hand pockets? I've been looking for a lightweight packable jacket with a two-way zip for quite some time, so when I go climbing I can belay my partner wearing it without tucking it in or scrunching it above my harness. I'm still debating whether to keep this jacket, but leaning towards keeping the jacket b/c it's hard to find a packable double zip jacket. Backcountry, please make a version 2 with hand pockets as well!

My new favorite spring jacket

It?s so perfectly light and the material is incredible. The zippers going in both direction were a plus I didn?t know I needed - I end up adjusting the zippers as I heat up with my run but still want some protection. It?s also great because it doesn?t make that swishy noise that other shells do. There is only one pocket on the right side that that barely fits an iPhone. While it?s nice to be able to put both hands in pockets as you walk, it?s not a big deal but worth noting.

I wanted a running shell for windy and/or foggy days without all the swooshing material sounds. This jacket is perfect! Great fit, love the fabric, silent, breathable, and still warm. The only thing I wish was more color options.

I am a Backcountry employee that works on the brand team and have some feedback to share. I am so excited every time I reach for my bike so I can wear my Madcreek, or is it the other way around? Either way, this jacket is worth a second look. The Pertex Quantum Air is ultra-light and adds just the right amount of protection/ warmth to your early morning/ spring rides. It is treated with DWR so will repel light sprinkles, the moisture-wicking fabrics will also keep the rider nice and dry. It has a snap on the hood which is so cool! It keeps your hood in place while biking. If you purchase your true to size the jacket will fit next to skin. If you are looking for it to fit like a wind shell size up from your true size.
