I love the Mad Creek

First let me say I had to hunt and search to find this jacket. I was not able to find it through Backcountry, but after finally getting my hands on it I don't regret the effort. It's unfortunate that Backcountry apparently hasn't been restocking the M & L sizes, hopefully they won't be discontinuing it. The Mad Creek checks the boxes I needed for a lightweight running shell at a fraction of the cost of other brands (and side by side comparison is almost identical). It sheds water like a duck even after hours of running in continuous steady rain, but expect some water to sneak in at the usual areas - the full length of zipper especially. Wind resistance is great for such a soft and lightweight shell as well but don't expect Pertex Quantum Air to be entirely windproof. You do get outstanding breathability as a tradeoff however. The only thing I would change would be to add a drawstring to the hood to help keep it down tight on windy days. Having it balloon and flap like a trash bag on your head is probably this jacket's biggest downfall. I'm 6'4" & 185 lbs and the large fits my long arms perfectly with plenty of coverage in the back. All this said, I'd buy it again in a heartbeat.

This needs to be your lightweight go-to

I was given this product by Backcountry, but this review is my personal opinion This shell covers all the bases - no matter what activity you're doing. It's lightweight yet durable - allowing you to throw it in your backpack without concern of taking up too much space or weight. I've used it on a few spring hikes already and having it with me on the summit was a game changer. The breathability is a great alternative to a wind breaker/ rain jacket when its still warm out but you're chilled from drying sweat! The design team killed the design of the cuffs on this jacket. The cuffs are bunched on the inside, allowing your inside sleeves to not get caught on stuff, while the top of the cuff extends further out on the hand. As someone who has long arms, having long sleeves is always an aspect I look at before purchasing gear, and this design addresses all of those problems in one. Honestly whether you're bagging peaks or making coffee on a tailgate - this jacket can be used in so many other situations. I've taken it out fly fishing and cycling and it stands the test. Its awesome to see one piece of gear stretching into so many different uses - something a lot of brands miss these days.

DWR Waterproofness

Is this the more environmentally focused DWR coating? How often does that have to be reapplied to maintain water resistance? Anyone know how water resistant this is? Thx!

Great Jacket

I have been shopping around for a lightweight windbreaker for some time now. This jacket is great, it easily packs into its own pocket, is super light and does the job. I have used it as an outer and mid layer. Would definitely recommend. Fits true to size, I bought the XL and have had many issues with jackets being too small in that size.

Very Impressed

Backcountry nailed it with this jacket. This is made of Pertex Quantum Air - basically a windbreaker, but more breathable - making for an extremely versatile piece. You sacrifice some of the wind resistance of a typical windbreaker, but in exchange, are able to keep this on while exercising without becoming clammy immediately. The material has a great feel compared to a windbreaker as well - soft and comfortable against the skin and pleasantly stretchy. I am typically between a small and a medium, with the chest being the limiting factor, and this fits perfectly in a small. It is not too baggy, but also has room for a midlayer or thicker fleece underneath. The cuffs sit very comfortably with plenty of stretch and the hem has a slight drop tail to it, giving nice coverage in the rear. I was weary of a hood with no adjustments, but it sits comfortably with just the elastic and moves with your head perfectly. This will be a super versatile piece that I see myself using mountain biking, ski touring, trail running. For the weight conscious out there, my size Small weighs 5.1 oz and packs up tiny.
