Comp Grid Pullover

Featuring a hybrid fleece construction that performs well during active pursuits, the Backcountry Comp Grid Pullover comes in handy whether your dawn patrols involve steep skin tracks or frozen ice faces. The mix of grid and hard fleece creates warmth where you want it, and breathability where you need it, with thicker insulation at your core, and breathable lightweight comfort in places where perspiration is likely—the back and underarms. The hood is built to discourage ice build up during winter sports, with laser-cut ventilation and a shaped binding, so you're free to keep it equipped even while you're working hard. A nice dose of stretch in the construction ensures full mobility whether you're wielding ski poles or an ice axe, and the strategically placed seams keep chafing to a minimum beneath your pack.

Great looking hoodie, quality feel

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Large

This is a great mid weight layer to use as either a base under warmer clothing or as an outer layer on cool days [40-55 degrees]. I'm 6'2" and 195 lbs and a large fits great. It is a little longer in the arms and waist which suits me well. If you like a slim athletic fit this is a great hoodie. The two fabric style is nice and the offset zipper is a unique look. Highly recommend either as a training top on cool days or a layer under a jacket.

Tall fit, awesome thick quality

Familiarity:

For a tall skinny guy it is hard to find good-fitting layers. This fits longer and slimmer than similar products from other brands and the fabric has a nice girth to it. Its the perfect weight for early morning camping and bike riding, and I plan to use it in the backcountry this winter. I was most impressed with the design - its front pocket is big enough for a larger cell phone to sit vertically on the chest, the sleeves are long and don't slip up when you put your arms over your head, and the thumb holes are nicely placed so that they aren't gaping open if you aren't using them. I love the neck design - no chafed chin! Backcountry really nailed it on this one in my opinion. I think its pretty reasonably priced and excellent quality.

My new favorite hoodie

I was looking for a light weight layer for early morning fall/winter runs and evening dog walks. This has been my new go-to layer. It's super soft and warm. I also used it for a 65 mile gravel ride in Island Park Idaho last weekend and it performed perfectly for hill climbs and fast descents. I am tempted to buy a second one in case this gets discontinued.

Great for $30

Bought this in a medium black on steepandcheap for $30. Fit is great. Trim without being too snug. Arms are just long enough to use the thumb holes without the shirt riding up when you reach overhead. Logos are subdued, which is great is you don’t like flashy, obvious branding like I do. The hood? Personally I love it. Zips up to become a balaclava that rests right under the nose. I have a big head and it fit me fine, so it’ll fit you. It CAN be worn fully zipped without the hood, though it does bunch under the neck like others have mentioned. Easy as dropping the top zipper a few inches though. Likewise, if you don’t want to get the balaclava effect just fold the offset zipper to the side and it functions like a normal hood. The quarter zip has two zippers so you can use the hood but still vent the chest should you need it, I like that. I don’t use chest pockets, but I appreciate the it being there. Held my iPhone 8+ with a little room to spare to give you a size reference. The “grid fleece” isn’t the typical grid you’d expect like in a Patagonia R1. It’s thin fleece with thicker, raised dots of fleece (see pic). This is placed on the back, in the hood, underside of arms, and at the lower hemline of the shirt. The chest and upper arms are regular micro fleece. It’s July and 90+ degrees outside so I haven’t got to really test the item. Felt good in my 70 degree house though. I’ll have to wait for cooler weather to test it’s insulation and breathability though. At $30 it’s a solid piece, even a bargain. At full retail price it’s putting itself into a territory with stiff, well-reviewed competition. If I had to choose between this at full price or an R1, I’d go with the R1. I can see possibly paying $50 for this and think they’d sell like crazy at that price. Having said that, I’d buy one in every color if they were offered in the $30-50 price range. Seems to be a very versatile, considerably well made piece, and I look forward to testing it out. 4/5 stars mainly based on full retail price, and not being able to actually test the item just yet.

Collar/hood design is awful IMHO

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

I picked up 2 of these on steep and cheap for $29.97 each but will be returning them because I absolutely hate the collar and hood design. The zipper can't be zipped up all the way without wearing the hood because the neck hole is so small when zipped. It is about 5 inches in diameter, so you literally have the hood opening digging into your throat and a lot of bunched up fabric due to the hood being designed to cover your mouth with barely enough space for your nose to stick out. When you do wear the hood and zip it all the way up, enjoy having fabric pressed tightly to your mouth and digging into your nose. The hood is such a snug fit that it causes the garment to start to ride up because the cut of the hood is too small. Try to turn your head and it rides up even more. That being said, for $29.97 the build quality is nice, but I personally can't stand having a (IMO) useless hood and zipper.
