Why We Built The Flyweight Stockingfoot Pant+ Wader With Simms

The river's always fishier on the other side, so we made the Flyweight Stockingfoot Pant+ Wader technical and robust so we can get there comfortably. We also added stocking feet with Hex Air Gravel Guards for extended coverage, superior moisture management, and a smaller pack size than standard options.

Lightweight LOVE & A Super Sweet Fit

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer
Size Bought:
Small

I've been looking for something lightweight yet durable that I can wear for warmer weather walk-n-wades as well as rowing and fishing from a boat and I've finally found the perfect wader! Designed as a "pant plus" these have more coverage then a pant wader but are less restrictive than a full wader. Great for in the boat - I have more range of motion while rowing and I don't have to worry about the dreaded sweaty back. Definitely appropriate for when you need to hop out of the boat to pick apart a run or net a fish. These are super lightweight and packable, and pair really well with the flyweight boots. If you travel a lot (when COVID safe) and don't want to bring your most beefy and bulky kit, these are a great option. There is 4 layer GORE-TEX in the lower legs where you need more durability, and a stretchy 3 layer GORE-TEX in the upper to allow for more mobility. I love the pockets -they are self draining if you wade a bit too deep and they're big enough to hold a beer or your fly box, a couple extra weights, or some floatant. Fun and refreshing color, too. Not too bright, but also not your old school drab tan. I typically wear a small or XS in apparel and the small fits me perfectly with enough room to layer. My feet are a street shoe 8 but I have no issue with the stockingfoot in the small. There is a built in gusseted zipper along the top that easily allows for extra layers, so I'm super stoked to wear these in the fall with a puffy while I'm rowing or walking. If you're busty and have a lot of trouble finding waders to fit your boobs, these could be a great option due to the low cut and adjustable suspenders. Perfect for: - rowing a boat (unzip the gusset to allow extra room for layers or your gut, also say goodbye to swampy, sweaty rower's back) - fishing run-off/spring time or early summer, when the air temp is HAWT but the water temps are brrrchilly - when you're annoyed with the fit of wading pants - when you're putting down river miles off the beaten path (think log hopping, some boulder scrambling, frequent river crossings, heading to an alpine lake) - traveling (they pack down to be no bigger than a shoe box) Not so perfect for: - winter fishing - wading chest deep while swinging for steel Where I've used these: - Rowing A & B section of the Green River - Fishing the middle Provo as far away from the access points as my little legs will carry me - Scrambling out and onto boulders in Bear Trap Canyon & Reynolds Pass on the Madison (gotta fish the buckets, you know?) - Traversing the boulder laden banks and hopping over 4,000 downed trees in Gallatin Canyon Next up: Yellowstone Natl Park this summer and a Snake River trip!!

I was given this product by Backcountry, but this review is my personal opinion and I have some things to share based on my experience with this gear. I am a new paddler who hopes to eventually take on a longer canoe trip. I bought these waders to practice lining a canoe in the river shallows and I loved how well they performed. These Simms pants and matching jacket kept me plenty dry and warm. The pants have nice outer pockets which drain if they accumulates any water. I was worried at first about the enclosed foot fitting into my boots but they ended up fitting great and I didnt feel any bunching up. The pants are stretchy and allow for a good range of movement in the hips without feeling too restricted. The pants come up to roughly the nipple line. The color and design of these pants is eye catching but still subtle in the environment. The pants feel well made and worth the price. Recommend pairing the waders with the Simms flyweight jacket as there?s no pocket in the interior to store anything. I did feel a little sweaty after a while but I think thats to be expected with waterproof gear and a great sign that they keep the water out. Overall no complaints about this gear. 10/10 recommend.

Am I even wearing waders?

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I was given this product by Backcountry, but this review is my personal opinion and I have a lot of amazing things to share with you based on my experience with it... Color - First of, let's talk about the color and get it out of the way...yes, it's not the typical boring natural khaki, green or camouflage colors that is typical in the wader market. If your goal is to blend in the natural surroundings this color is not it. If your goal is to fish in style and look great in photos (high contrast) and have some new-school color in your life, this is the one and only! You just have to work on stealth and presentation of your flies to the fish and you are back in the game. Sizing/Fit - I'm 5'6" athletic build and I own 3 pairs of Simms Waders (G4, G3, & Stockingfoot) in Small Mens size. The Backcountry x Simms Flyweight Stockingfoot is almost exactly the same fit as my waders mentioned above with a slightly different modern take. First, all my Simms waders ends above 2" from my nipple line. In contrast with this new Backcountry x Simms Flyweight, the waders is a touch shorter in covering my chest and ends right below my chest/nipple line area. Think of it as a wading pants with at least 6" coverage above your waistline. The fit is purposed driven, nothing bulky and fits like a modern technical shell, it's not too tight and not too wide like a clown suit. Less is more! Material - The new Gore-Tex material is thinner compared to my Simms old G4, G3 & Stockingfoot but this new Gore-Tex is on another level of durability, lightness & flexibility (4 layer of Gore-Tex goodness). There is a noticeable stretch on the waders which allowed me to move with confidence especially sneaking (bending/crawling) on spooky wild trout in narrow creeks. The knees all the way down to the boot/neoprene area are reinforced with thicker materials for durability just like my G4/G3's. The gravel guards (Hex air) are completely revamped on this Backcountry x Simms Flyweight Waders. They used a thinner polyester grid-type fabric to protect your boots/booties, what they've achieved is a much lighter protection from the natural elements from hiking, wading, etc. The durability of this new gravel guards is still inconclusive for me. Application - Since owning this new waders, I have used it during a light spring snow showers (30-45 degrees) in Silverthorne, CO and all the way up to 87 degrees of full throttle sun in Sacramento, Ca. My take? I prefer using this waders between 50-80 degrees or depending on water temperature. This is NOT the type of waders for winter/early spring condition for me. The waders performs flawlessly on long hike averaging 3+ miles approaches to alpine lakes, small creek tributaries or even on long days of wading & boulder hopping in tailwaters such as Cheesman Canyon or Eleven Mile Canyon in Colorado. What's new - The new stuff are the two front anterior hip pockets that is made of a stretchy fabric commonly seen on running shorts or trail pants is something truly extraordinary. At first, I was skeptical and definitely would not place my phone or car keys on this pocket unless I'm on a shallow water. There is no velcro or zipper closure on pockets and can definitely see myself wading on deep water while my phone is in these pockets. What I love about it is that it holds my 12 oz water bottle and 2 beers! If you're waist deep in the water, you can keep your beer cold, voila! There is no other pockets or interior pockets/organization on this waders and that is a good thing (weight) and bad thing (no place to store car keys/phone or fly box) depending on your needs. The front anterior zipper with button clasp is a game changer when the nature calls and if you need air ventilation when the temperature heats up! Verdict - The Backcountry x Simms Flyweight waders is at home for adventure anglers looking for light/durable performance waders.

Amended Review

In my original review, I mentioned a few issues with these waders that I've now rethought, and, after trying on every wader made in the last four years, I decided to repurchase them. OK, so I stand what I said before about the pockets. They have no usable pockets, nor the usual Simms internal zipper that lets you add your own pocket. So there's no place to safely stash a phone, pliers, etc. I fish with a sling pack that I like to have out of the way while I'm casting/landing. So I don't want to have to bring my sling back around once I've got a fish (and I'm managing the net, rod, etc.) to reach for things like hemostats or my phone for a good pic. So that was really the most disappointing part. However, I decided to do two things. I am rigging the sling of my pack with a magnetic attachment for my phone, and I am literally cutting out the internal zipper of my other Simms waders and sewing them on the inside of these. Other pockets: I don't plan to ever use the existing front pockets, unless I want to slip my phone in there for shallower wading. But I certainly won't use them for a fly box or beer. That sounds very uncomfortable and even less attractive. Length: Now that I know a little more about wading, I realized the length was perfect. I thought that being a little long by a couple of inches was bad, but it's actually super helpful when you're navigating a cliffy hike, kneeling to net a fish, or doing other bendy activities. OK, so why did I choose these over all the other zillion pairs I tried on? 1) The 4-layer Gore Tex is awesome. These are constructed similarly to the G4s, from what I can tell. I think they'll end up being pretty durable. I hope. 2) That cropped top means easy peeing. After spending the last few weeks in my Soul Rivers, I am tired of shimmying out of my waders to drop trou on a 12-hour day. 3) DO YOU SEE HOW GOOD LOOKING THEY ARE?? That may not matter to others, but it does to me. 4) I like that I'll be able to layer them in the winter and shed layers easily in the spring. They seem pretty versatile.
