Perfect Fit

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer
Size Bought:
Medium

For the first time in my life, I found a jacket that fit me perfectly. Comfortable to wear and keeps me dry all day. Phone picked is snug if your phone has a case but it prevents it from jostling around while skiing. It protects well against the wind as well (as long as you have the vents closed). I've also had some contact with brush while skiing off piste and there is no evidence of any ripping or tears. Keep making this jacket this exact same way.

Seems tough, but the zipper…

I bought this item in January. It seems bullet proof when it comes to keeping the elements out, but the zipper is already acting up. At one point I could not get the zipper to come apart and had to take it off without unzipping it. Normally a large fits right, but this jacket feels big. Maybe that’s the style but I wish I purchased a medium.

Sizing is a bit bulky but totally works for me. I am 5’10” 175lbs bought size M, fits comfortably with layers underneath. It’s super nice to have freedom of movement , haven’t had any issues with zippers yet after 3 days at Steamboat.

Zipper is the weak point

I purchased my cottonwood bibs and jacket in 2021. They had a winner minus a glaring flaw with the zipper size. It is too small and it binds. It has done this from day 1 but the warranty doesn’t back up the design flaw. Getting the zipper started is an issue and it binds. Why for a jacket like this they would go cheap on the zipper astounds me… such a minor cost to put in a quality zipper. The zipper binds when traveling above the collar bone to fully zipped. It just hangs and it is a fight. This is because no one considered the tooth size for a small zipper would be impossible to zip when the fabric is worn and bent at natural human angles. So you unzip the jacket to access a pocket inside… well good luck. If it is fully zipped and the jacket is on your body you are not doing this easily. Same goes for zipping it back up to fully zipped. Starting the zipper is again an issue. It binds immediately. Some of the teeth seem loose at this point and I’m hoping it gets through another season without breaking. Pretty dissapointing. The complaints regarding the hood and a helmet are legit. You pretty much can’t ski with the hood up and have any peripheral vision. Perhaps they fixed this but mine is terrible. I get lots of comments that are positive regarding the appearance in the lift line and when I ride with people. It is a bummer to have to tell them to avoid the jacket due to the weak zipper. Being in Utah, and skiing the cottonwoods I doubt you are getting many positive referral sales for this jacket from me. Regards, Ski Patrol Alum

This is an amazing coat. I struggle often with shells because I have a swimmers build uptop and a rhinoceros build below. I have longer than proportionate arms. (Ape index anyone?) I have had my eyes on this kit for a while and just put it through the ringer last week. I skied hard open to close, took many tumbles, apre'd hard as well and was comfortable, dry and got comments the entire day. When this first came out of the box I was worried, it was very boxy and long in the arms, even for an orangutan like me. However after a little wear, it settled and fits perfectly (L top, M Bottom) Never once was my movement restricted, or did I feel like I was wearing a tarp. I was dry and the water beaded right off, even when others around me were soaked. There are more than enough pockets of all sizes, and the goggle wipe on a tether is *chef's kiss* The pocket zippers stayed closed the whole time even though one spectacular five point yard sale. Sometimes in shells, when a pocket is full it gives the wearer a lumpy appearance but this is not the case for this one, couldn't tell I had: extra goggles, water bottle, protein bar, turnikit, knife, beanie, phone, maps, balaclava all in the front. There are other comments about the front zipper, I didn't have any issues albeit being very stiff I do also have the matching bibs and they fit great. Buy them, you won't be disappointed.

Amazing pocket space

I have been using this jacket for a few weeks now and I never have to worry about running out of pocket space. The gortex material is very durable and lightweight. It’s a perfect resort skiing jacket and keeps me warm on the coldest of days. I had no issues with the zipper it just takes some finagling rarely.

Bad Zipper BC on gives45 day warranty

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

While I loved the coat the zipper failed. The gearhead I call had me write an email to the warranty department. I sent three emails which I got a 3 read receipts, but still no reply. When ordering another ski jacket a gearhead got me an RMA# to return my old coat. 10 days later they sent an email that they were sending the jacket back because of the 45 days. BEWARE of BACKCOUNTRY BRANDS they only give a 45 day return. So If you buy a ski jacket early , do not ski for two months and have a broken zipper on day 1. You have wasted $500. Needless to say I am sending the new ski jacket back for my $ and ordering one from a vendor that honors their products.

Zipper is a Major Issue

I really like the design of this jacket and the material, but the zipper is a major issue. This is a 3 layer Gortex shell and designed to be outside. The zipper is not. It's tiny. It's week. It splits open and the teeth are not robust enough to keep the zipper closed.... a nightmare when out in the elements. My first jacket was replaced by warranty and I had the exact same issue with the 2nd jacket. That's 2 season's in a row with outerwear issues. Not good.

Great shell, lots of nice features.

This jacket is great for charging in powder or just riding groomers out. One suggestion I would make, the zipper on the bottom tends to creep up and reverse zip from the bottom up. So some sort of feature that would keep this lower zipper secure. Other than that love the jacket and recommend.
