You never knew studying could be this cool.

Whether gearing up to get serious about your beloved snow worship or getting in-depth for backcountry travel and safety, this kit lets you look at crystal type and size to determine properties of precipitation, a slope meter to measure steepness, and thermometer to track temperature changes, all of which can help determine stability or slide potential. For further recording, get your hands on a field book and see how the whole season takes shape.

    Perfect for Snow Science

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

If you are looking to get more into snow science, this is the perfect way. All the instruments are super high quality, and I can tell they are going to last a while. Plus, the included carrying case fits everything perfectly and still has more room to include a pen and other smaller items.

    Necessity for touring!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

No matter if you're taking an avi class or going out for your 100th day in the backcountry for the season. You can never be too careful! It's always wise to dig a pit and really understand what's going on with the snow. This kit is super compact, lightweight and carries the basic essentials to study the snow.

Perfect Size Kit w/ all the basics

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

As a Certified Snowmobile specific AAA Level 2 Avalanche graduate and AAA Avalanche Class Assistant Instructor I find the Backcountry Access Snow Study Kit to contain all the basis essentials. It is small and compact to fit nicely in your backpack with minimal weight. This is a perfect kit for anyone taking Avalanche classes, traveling in the backcountry and need basic tools when digging snow pits.

    Everything in one place

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Being organized in the BC is critical. This Mad Scientist avalanche kit is the ticket. Everything in one place! If you are about to take an avalanche course, this kit is a must have.

    Must Have Tools

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Love the compact design of this, it's a must have in your pack when traveling in the backcountry. Knowledge is power and this lets you study the snowpack to stay as safe as you can out there.

    A sanity saver

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Nothing is worse than freezing your butt off and not being able to find your loupe or crystal card. The snow study kit keeps everything organized and at your finger tips. Everything is well thought out and serves a purpose. Can't recommend this enough for any serious snow nerd.

    Great Tool

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Purchased this kit a few months ago and have been using it constantly. I was impressed with the overall quality of the tools. Everything contained in the kit is very durable and can stand up to a beating! The slope meter is nice to keep in a pocket so you can quickly measure a slope while touring - it's a great piece to bring even if you leave the rest of the kit at home. The crystal card included is very easy to read and provides great contrast. It is black, so make sure to keep it out of the sun and in a cold spot.

Overall, I'm very happy with this kit. It is a perfect size and fits nicely in your pack. I strongly suggest purchasing one and taking it out on a tour.

Now that I have it, I LIKE it!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Started with everything in a ziplock bag, and it worked, except when you got some snow in there - everything had to be dumped on the table when you got back to dry out. I thought, "this Snow kit is overkill", but went for it anyway. It has made my time in the snow pit faster. I dig my pit and a little shelf and drop this into it open with all the tools ready to go. No more measuring slope angle with my ski poles. The kit even has room to hold pencils, my Avalanche/Travel log journal, and when not in use, my compass. It fits nicely in the inner sleeve pocket of my pack, and added extra security from damage. The tools inside work as expected - slope angle, temp gage, scope, crystal chart. I like the chart as it is the one I learned with and I like the "snap" to it for my "tap test" (tap the bottom of the board with some snow on it and see if facets dance, or pack "sticks" together). Really can't go wrong with this and I recommend it for those just starting or doing snow study for years.

    Pit performer and organizer

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've been using this kit for a couple of seasons now and weather I am having a casual day of touring and digging quick pits or getting after a full profile I love having my study kit. I always know where all my tools are, and the design is obviously well thought out by snow professionals.

Some of my favorite features to the case:

    - the zip compartment which I use for my pencil, a mini write in the rain, and I actually put my slope meter in there too.

-The ability to hang the kit off my ski tip.

-The elastic band that runs across the back of the book which I use to put my field book in that way all my observation tools are in one place.

All and all a great kit to keep you organized in your pit.

    Good to perfect your skills

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Really makes the process of analyzing where to make your pit more educated and precise. Going step by step using each tool to make sure you're making the best decision.

    Unanswered Question

Does this kit have room to fit a field notebook and a 2-meter collapsible ruler in it, in addition to the tools that are included?
