    Great, simple saw

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is a great snow saw. It's simple and is not over designed like so many others that seem to be on the market. It works great when digging a pit. The length markings on the blade are very helpful. If anything, there should be a better sheath, but the bottom line is that the saw is good and that's what we're focused on here.

    Will rip up your pack

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The saw itself works fine and is super sharp, and I haven't had a problem putting that saw back in the sheath. However, when storing the saw the sheath is not secured in any way and thus easily slides off the blade. As a result, the saw will quickly dice up your pack during a tour.

I bought this with a BCA Float bag so expected there to be some compatibility... maybe I didn't store it properly in the pack's "mud room"? But when I called BCA customer service to ask if this was user error on my end, their only recommendation is to make my own sheath out of cardboard or buy their saw that stows in the shovel.

Save yourself replacing an expensive pack and buy something else.

The right saw for a good pit and more

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

When it comes to avi safety you need the best equipment. BCA show us time and time again they care about their products. This saw works great for pits but can also cut other things. A friend used it to get their Christmas tree right after making a beautiful pit!
Maybe not the lightest saw on the market but still very light and worth it for the versatility!

    Good All-rounder.

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

The saw has some room for improvement, it is a little on the heavy (8oz) and its plastic "sheath" is a touch disconcerting. The saw is sharp though and will cut through wood and snow easily. Makes my column tests a little easier, and will be good for hare hunting in the backcountry.

    Never leave home without it

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Sure its a great saw for digging pits, but it really shines for me when out snowmobiling. This thing RIPS thru wood. Saplings, dead wood, etc. To have un epics, I always carry this sledding to get out of unforseen circumstances. Others said this was a flimsy, I respectfully disagree. It's sharpness yields defined columns and the measurements on the blade help make quick work of columns. Handle, while heavier than others, is super ergonomic, comes in handy when cutting a ton and is MUCH warmer than others. Sheath is finicky but I have used it for years and never had a problem with it. The saw fits easily

    Gets the Job Done

The upside of this blade is that it cuts through snow and wood like butter, making digging pits a breeze. It is incredibly sharp and is really handy to use with the length of the blade marked every 5 cm, making column tests easier than ever to perform with accurate, repeatable results, and since you're a scientist, that's what you really want, right?

The downside to this saw is that it doesn't use space in your pack very well, the handle design is a bit bulkier than expected and the cover for the blade is not really adequate. If the cover bumps anything in your pack, and it will, it will bump the blade cover off and you risk tearing up your pack. What I found that works for me is using my probe cover as a sheath for the blade. This gives me something to use the probe cover for, which was just sitting around before, and allows me the peace of mind that my new Jetforce Halo isn't being destroyed from the inside out.

Further, for those interested, this saw fits, just barely, into the Avy pocket of the Jetforce Halo.

      Needs a sheath

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

The plastic cover that comes with it is next to worthless. If it catches on any thing in your bag it will slide off, or up, and you'll risk tearing your bag apart.

      Bone Saw

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The BCA Snow Saw does just what it should. It's ridiculously sharp and can cut everything, including wood, like butter. I'm giving it 4 stars because it could be a little less flimsy.

For everyone who's had trouble with the plastic sheath, I had similar issues and bloody times attempting to get the saw back into it until I figured out that the sheath "folds" open, allowing the saw to slide right in, then it snaps shut. Since then I haven't had any problems with it and it has stayed put while in my pack. Hopefully this picture gives you an idea of how the sheath opens...

      Bone Saw

      Does what's intended...

Saw does what it's supposed to do. Cuts through the snow with ease and precision. There are better, stronger saws, but for basic tasks like column tests, it works well. Not a great cover for the blade, but all in all, a solid saw.

        SHARP, and flimsy

This is a good saw, it's sharp as hell, so be careful...like Jason down there said, the sheath isn't the most solid thing ever. Other than that, it's light, and it fits in a Dakine Heli Pro DLX pack just fine.

          Good saw

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This saw works great: cuts through the crud easy and I'm not compelled to get a new one, but ...

The sheath on the saw doesn't stay on really well without using a rubber band (which is easy to lose in 10+ ft. of snow). I'm kind of shocked that the sheath hasn't ever partly come off and I haven't reached into my bag for a water bottle and cut myself ... badly. This thing is really sharp!

Other kind-of bummer: I wear a S/M Black Diamond pack and the saw is too big to fit in the avi. tool organizer pocket.

          great saw

Love this saw. I use it for snow pit stabalization testing. However, the blade sheath that comes with it is useless. It's difficult to get on. I cut my hand pretty bad while manuevering it back on the blade. Ended up making a sheath out of cardboard and lots of duct tape.

            I like this saw

My saw came with a sheath, so I am happy with it. It rocks at cutting wood, in the picture I just defeated an asian lumberjack at a wood cutting contest, so of course this saw rocks! and for digging pits and testing snow it works well. Only downside is that is just barely short enough to fit in all of my packs, making for a tough fit sometimes.

              Worst Saw

No sheath... and sharp: It will tear your pack to hell. They say that it's the only saw to be good at cutting wood... that's because that's really all it is, a wood saw with cm marks. Lastly, it's not compact. Doesn't fit in side country pack.

                Not this one

I won plenty of BCA gear of which I am happy. This saw however, is not one of them. There are better ones out there.
Definitely, needs a sheath. Doesn't come with one. Very sharp cutting surface, good. A little too narrow from blade teeth to back of blade. It is light.

Ad says this saw comes with a sheath but...

Ad says this saw comes with a sheath but reviews say no sheath. Does this saw come with a sheath?

                  Best Answer

It does come with a protective sheath. Sometimes it does fall off when in transit or getting picked from the warehouse, but it should come with it. If people don't have it, they can contact us or BCA and we can get it taken care of.
