Slope Meter
Before you pick out a line, you could do the old "Ehhhh, I think it's probably roughly maybe about a 40-degree slope, I guess", or you could whip out the Backcountry Access Slope Meter and actually get a real reading of the angle of the slope you're checking out. BCA hooked this inclinometer up with red, orange, and yellow markings to easily point out the most dangerous slope angles, and included a compass so you can double-check your aspect at the same time.
- Inclinometer designed specifically for backcountry touring
- Reads any slope angle up to 60-degree steepness
- Red, orange, and yellow danger markings centered at 37 degrees
- Compass assists with aspect information
- Item #BCA000H
- Degrees
- 0 - 60F

Reliable and easy to use
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
Admittedly, the inclinometer on the BCA app is pretty nice, but I hate the idea of relying on anything electronic in the backcountry. This thing is easy to use, doesn't rely on batteries, and the compass works much better than the uncalibrated POS on my phone! This is a great stocking stuffer for anyone who spends any time in the backcountry! Would also make a great gift paired with the BCA field book for anyone looking to practice taking observations.

Essential
When your phone dies in the backcountry, and you don't have a slope meter...you might want to think about grabbing one of these.

Technology is great until the battery dies. This is so lightweight and small that it fits perfectly into the hip pocket of my bag. It is easy to get to, I am not worried if I drop it in the snow, and it doesn't take batteries. Batteries in the cold don't mix well and usually, you will want to save your phone for emergencies or emergency selfies.

This is a pretty straightforward device. simple and easy to use to take the guesswork out of finding the angle of the slope. Recommend getting two because they do have a tendency to disappear.

MUCH better than an iPhone

This is a great tool for any winter time backcountry user that is concerned about avalanche safety. Previously I’ve used the iPhones built in feature, which wasn’t made for this purpose, was hard to orient and could die. This thing is extremely simple to use and read, not batteries, and in hardly noticeable in a jacket pocket. If you are looking at this review in the first place just buy one.

Must have!

A must have for backcountry touring. Great for testing the angle on a slope to see if you are in fact in avalanche terrain. I love to just stop and test myself or others on what we think the slop angle is. It weighs practically nothing, so it's great to just throw it in your pack.

Best $25 you'll ever spend!

This is such an awesome tool and I use it quite often and keep it close. As we cannot guess right on the slope angle this helps a ton in whether you ride a slope or have to travel elsewhere for goods. I usually put my ski pole down on the slope and the slope meter on top of the ski pole. The colors are awesome in telling you red is no good and the orange and yellow for "umm, what's your knowledge tell you?". Combined with training and proper planning, definitely keep you on and on top of the snow.

Simple tool that keeps you safe

This is a back country skiing must have. It's a simple tool that does a important job. I have really appreciated the hole that I have strung a string thought to keep the slope meter easily accessible around my neck or hanging from my packs shoulder strap.

Such a simple little tool can really make the difference between whether or not I ride a slope or don't. For those of us who tend to highly overshoot on our estimations of slope angles and/or don't have clinometers in our eyes, this is the tool for you. It is simple to use and easy to read, especially with the color coded system letting you know when you are getting to a dangerous slope angle. It is a very small tool that I like to keep in the chest pocket of my jacket for easy access, that can and should be utilized by everyone in the backcountry. The only downside is that the compass is less than helpful often times and doesn't seem to work incredibly well. That being said, for it's primary function, it works great, thus definitely check it out, it might be the best 25$ you ever spend!

Slope-o-meter
- Familiarity:

Amazing tool to have in your pocket while you're out there walking in the snow with skins on the skis. I can't stress how critical it is to use one if you aren't completely sure what the slope angles are measuring out to. 35 degrees can seem an awful lot like 30 degrees and that can be the difference between a slab tearing out and fun turns down to the car. I prefer the BCA meter with the compass just because it makes this thing the terrain selection "utility knife" - figure out aspect and slope quickly. Actual size is quite small (maybe ~3.5" long and ~2.0" wide with ~0.5" thickness) so it fits into your pocket nicely.

Simple and Reliable
I really like the BCA slope meter. 2 reasons, it is liquid filled like a level, making it quicker to get readings. I also like the compass feature that is built in.

Slope a dope
- Familiarity:

Picked this up to replace a 12 year old model I bought eons ago. I like the smaller size and the compass attachment. It fits easily in my Patagonia hard shell chest pocket for a quick inspection of any slope. There is also a hole for some dummy cord so you can tie it off. Using it is simple, simply whip it out and measure up. What I particularly like is that when the angle gets into avalanche territory this is color-coded so you can tell with a very quick glance the angle of the slope. The compass feature is nice because it gives you a quick check on aspect as well. All in all it is a pretty basic piece of kit, easy to use, nearly foolproof, and should be in the backcountry quiver of any off piste powderhound.
