Always toss it in my pack

Why carry around a shovel handle and axe when you don't have to. I love this 2 in 1 combo. With the lightweight aluminum axe head, i never think twice about tossing it in my bag, where as with an ice axe i would only bring it if i knew i needed it. Great addition for ski mountaineering in mostly snow and easy ice. The steel head is helpful too if you know you're getting into steep blue ice and rock.

I love it when a company nails a product I have been dreaming about. An ice axe that attaches to a shovel blade - eliminate another piece of metal weighing you down in your pack. The Shaxe is not only an essential piece of gear for keeping weight down for big missions, but also really helpful when snow conditions are leaning more towards hardpack and an ice axe might be more useful than a shovel - but, of course we still want a shovel in the event of avalanche, for snow pits, digging a shelter (think hard windslab, spring melt-freeze). Where it truly shines is what it was purpose built for: carrying deep into the mountains to climb and ski your dream lines.
