YTV Personal Flotation Device

The YTV Personal Flotation Device is Astral's most minimalist whitewater PFD, designed to strike a powerful balance between protection and mobility. The foam panels sit low and close to your chest and back, wide arm openings ensure full range of motion, and ripstop materials feel feathery light for easy paddling. Tp truly simplifying the YTV, Astral didn't even consider a front-zip opening, opting instead for a pull-over design that saves a few extra ounces.

As with any properly executed whitewater vest, you'll find a couple of pockets and the essential lash tab, so you can secure a knife or rescue strobe to the chest. Astral also included six size-adjustable straps (two each at the sides, shoulders, and waist) to ensure a precise and comfortable fit for every individual.

Great once it’s on

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Fit:
True to size

This is my first paddling vest, I purchased to use for SUP. I found the overhead style a bit difficult to get on and adjusted. Once I was wearing it it was fine. Good range of motion light weight. I can’t speak to the flotation because I haven’t fallen in wearing it yet!

Purchased for my wife for SUP, she is 5'4", size S/M fits well. Low profile vest is great for SUP, does not get in the way of paddling. She loves the purple/eggplant color. While we see a lot of people paddling without a PFD but we are more comfortable having the extra protection. This unobtrusive vest makes it easy to bring along and forget that you are wearing it.

Get Floatin'!

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

If you want to go lite and be moving quickly, this PFD is for you. Slimmed-down version of some the other Astral models, the YTV doesn't really feel like it was slimmed down..... It is missing the front pocket and it is a pullover design rather than side entry. Buoyancy felt great. I am 6'1" about 175 and I got an L/XL. It fits great but, when tightened down, the straps are a bit long and unruly. An easy cut and burn made them less unruly. I would get an M/L next time. Oh well! I would recommend for any kind of floating and paddling activities you have planned!

Astral YTV PFD

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

Having spent far too much time in this PFD, I can say that it’s an exceptional option for recreational flat water use. While it lacks the fancy features and endless pockets of my whitewater and touring vests, for most of my freshwater lake and river trips (swiftwater excluded) this is my go to. Super lightweight and barely noticeable after the first ten minutes, it quickly became my second skin for days, or weeks, in my canoe or kayak. Tens of thousands of paddle strokes later I can confidently commend this vest for its excellent low profile and amazing range of motion. Two pockets offer almost enough storage space, although it took some adjusting to as I had become used to the 5,000,000,000+ cubic inches of pockets provided by my kokotat. Oh, and by the way, it floats! Attached is a picture of a somewhat specific use while crossing a more or less frozen lake.

Super Comfy

Used this on a river kayaking trip, loved it! Great range of motion, I don't feel like it's riding up and choking me like traditional PFDs. LOVED the pockets!

Great value

Great range of motion. Material is very durable. The attachment point is the most robust I’ve seen on a vest as it’s reinforces with what I think is a layer of rigid plastic, little chance it will sag or rip. Fits my wife well and doubles as a push-up bra! I’m 5’10” 150lbs male with a 40” chest and the medium fits me very well also.

Not swimming in it!

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

As a petite female finding a PFD I don't feel like I am swimming in is quite a challenge. I loved the Astral YTV from the moment I tried it on. The minimal design with large arm openings makes this vest super comfy and allows for a wide range of motion. From rowing to fishing, the lightweight and durable design make it ideal for any aquatic adventure. The only downside (as others have mentioned) is the lack of storage space. While you may be able to fit a small tube of sunscreen or chapstick, there's not much room for anything else. At 5'1" and 115 lbs I find the S/M size fits great when cinched down. The "boob shelf" as it's being called makes a great fit even better as there is no uncomfortable squishing or rearranging needed. The Eggplant color is beautiful and the interior pattern design is the cherry on top. This is a quality PFD that I highly recommend!

Great, Low Impact PFD

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

This jacket is an excellent jacket for those that need plenty of room to move around and still have high flotation. I have used this jacket for whitewater kayaking (river running), rafting and SUPing (some whitewater). Although I do not personally play boat, many of those I know that do love this jacket. For river running or SUPing I have been pleased with the performance of the jacket. There is so much room around your arms to move around, it almost feels like you are not wearing one. If you are looking for more storage out of a PFD go for the Astral Sea Wolf or grab a dry box/bag. This jacket cannot even fit a clif bar but I normally carry a dry bag where ever I go on the river to keep some snacks.

Great Minimal PFD

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Picked up the Astral YTV because we were short a vest for an upcoming trip. It arrived and I was curious so I threw it on. It was super comfortable; so much so that I ditched my older PFD. I've since used it paddling a couple rivers and a ton of flat water. It's now my go-to vest. PROS: - Lightweight; - Comfortable fit for long stints on the water; - Clean minimalist styling; - Dries quickly; - There's a little space just below the shoulder straps to tuck in excess webbing so it's not flopping around your chest. CONS: - Two side pockets are a bit on the small side (don't expect to stash a ton of gear in these; a protein bar is about all that will fit); - "Hidden" lash tab was a bit of a challenge to mount a sheath onto. Also, to address another reviewer's comment - yes, the vest does have a shelf, of sorts, between the lower and upper sections on the front. Does this make it a "women's vest?" No, I don't think so. In fact, I found it to be rather nice; it makes the vest feel more flexible and roomy even when cinched down tight. Would this feature also be of benefit to women? Yep, probably. Is it a feature that exclusively benefits women? Nope, not at all.

Not unisex it's a women's vest

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This vest is not a unisex vest, as a male who bought this this vest Its meant for women. It has a boob rack to hold boobs. I used it in total 4 days of rafting, so you can say I gave it a solid try.
