Keeps you breathing in more ways then one.

With its Airescape technology, the Astral V-Eight Personal Flotation Device is one of the first breathable PFDs. This technology puts vents throughout the vest to keep cool air circulating, so you stay cool on those really hot days. For further comfort, the vest is fitted with a soft EVA foam back panel designed to cushion your back against your kayak, while its quick access knife tab and expanding mesh pockets let you outfit the vest to your liking.

Great vest - very comfortable

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Backcountry has the best customer service teams of any company that I have dealt with. I received a call an email shortly after I made my order. My vest arrived one time and was able to use on a two day paddle down the Current River in Missouri. True to size and very confortable. Easy to adjust. Pockets on either side easy to access. Great buy. Paddling friend had just purchased a different vest and once he saw mine was disappointed he didn't get this one.

Hey Glenn, thank you for the great review on the V-Eight and also on Backcountry's customer service. I have been a rep in the industry for 24 years and know that their GearHeads are absolutely the best out there!

Enjoy your Astral PFD!

Got this for my dad and he was pumped!

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I myself do not kayak but my dad has gotten into it the last few years. I got this for him as a gift and he has absolutely loved it. He wanted a life jacket that is very breathable because he was going to be using it during the hot summer days in Boise Idaho. This surpassed his expectations and he says it is very comfy on his back as well. It is not super bulky at all but yet it is still super safe. Please let me know if you have any questions on this jacket in particular.

Green River Approved!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Great vest for anyone looking for the safest and highest performance paddle/row jacket in the market. On the Green river, it is required that you wear a PFD. This is a great option due to the breathable back and the open fit. The design means material wont get in your way when you are constantly working your upper body while taking a beating from the sun. The overall low profile nature of this thing makes it a top pick!

Breathable, Light and comfortable !

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I am so glad I got my V-Eight this year. I wear my PFD any time I am in my kayak or wading the river and in the southeast it can get scorching hot in the summer time. I wear good breathable shirts, but if they can't breathe under your PFD what good are they ? The vents on the V-Eight make a monster difference in the coolness as well as the other features that assist in air flow. It is light, comfortable and does its job well. The high back fits my kayak great and allows me the full benefit of my lumbar support. i would recommend the V-Eight without question to any paddler that needed to be cooler on the water.
