Why We Like The Astral Hiyak Kayak Shoe
The Astral Men's Hiyak Kayak Shoe is lighter, more durable, and faster-drying than traditional neoprene booties, not to mention grippier and more stable. The abrasion-resistant, water-repelling canvas upper is far more durable than neoprene, and it's bonded directly to the G.ss outsole for enhanced stability. Airmesh insulation, like neoprene, traps air between your foot and the outside to keep feet warm. But unlike neoprene, it dries overnight, so it's ready to go again the next day.

Dope shoes
Out of the box, it seems a few design upgrades have been made! The velcro fits my ankle more precisely than previous models. The triple stitching is still tye way to go! And I swear the rubber is a bit stickier! This is at least the fourth time I’ve bought this shoe. The addition of women’s sizing was a necessary no-brainer! I teach rowing on whitewater and am a swiftwater rescue instructor. This shoe is THE shoe my feet prefer. And when it’s time to go kayaking, it does that too.

Great shoes
Love these shoes. Comfortable and felt great while walking over huge rocks and during a rescue. The suggestion to by up a size was great advice. I wear and 8.5 and purchased a 9 and they fit well.

Best Coastal Expedition Footwear, period.
Always have loved the Hiyak, for years its been my go-to expedition kicks on long coastal trips. Perfect for walking over sharp rocks and barnacles as well as gripping to wet logs and paddleboards. Comfy all day long. And now I absolutely love the new Driftwood Gray colour option!

Best river shoes I have found in 20 yrs
I own a kayak school/tour company. I am on the water a lot. I have been wearing these shoes for years. They are very comfortable, provide good ankle support, great traction and I like the strap covering the laces to keep them from hanging up in the boat. This is not my first pair, won't be my last.

Great Wildwater Shoe; #69 thread needed
First, the great: these feel like a shoe, are decent for hiking, and (best of all) will flex to fit in most any WW boat. The sole grip is pretty good for a year+. To improve: Please Astral, stop sewing with such weak thread. I’m continually darning my HiYaks with fishing twine and a simple, inexpensive upgrade to a stronger thread could prevent this. (Also, larger and stronger velcro on the laces enclosures please). And yes — I’ll buy a new pair with or without these changes—please though, why not improve?

Terrible Grip
The Grip is TERRIBLE, don't believe the hype. On SANDY or WET ROCKS like every scout or rescue scenario you get no traction and it's super sketchy. Plus the sole is starting to peel away from the toe box after 4 trips. Otherwise these shoes are rad, I love the extra ankle protection from the high top and love how the velcro covers the laces making them super secure.

Fit great over my drysuit.

Lightweight and comfortable. Astral seems to run narrow so wide feet or thick socks/liners need to size up.

Best paddling shoe. Period.
Best paddling shoe hands down! Flexible sole for cramming your feet in smaller full slice boats. Amble grip on wet rocks, and a little ankle support for scrambling around put ins and take outs. I have been using this shoe for years and am siked to get the new gray color.
