Astral hit the nail on the head when it created the Astral Green Jacket Personal Flotation Device. This is a PFD for whitewater professionals and professional river rescuers, and it oozes toughness and utilitarian purpose down to the tiniest detail. The front panel features a large clamshell-style opening that can hold a rescue rope, there's a quick-release harness built into the side and a tow system on the back, and Astral included Spectra safety loop for emergency extractions.
Astral's designers even worked in their unique Tectonic foam panel fit system, which uses a static panel at the chest and a dynamic floating panel at the torso to maximize mobility and keep the PFD comfortable as you paddle. Sure, you could find a lighter PFD option for the river, but you won't find another with the laundry list of forward-thinking safety features of the Green Jacket.

Such a great vest! It is very comfortable to paddle with and does not rub on armpits. I recommend to anyone that needs a PFD!

Got one for son
- Familiarity:
- I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
We get into some knarly places so it is good to have gear and safety training to go with it. He loves being able to learn rescue techniques and how to think tactically in pressure situations. This pfd is super comfortable and allows him to get the most out of his paddle when working the hole.

The preferred PFD around here
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
After paddling whitewater kayaks 12/12 months last year and really enjoying it, I've begun steadily upgrading all of my gear as my experience has grown. Mainly play boating on the New River near home and creeking locally with my much more experienced friends. After having to climb out of a cave and rescue my boat recently, I learned firsthand how important a pfd with a good harness could be. As a former USN Rescue Swimmer I love this piece of bulletproof gear. The pullover style fits great and really feels comfortable. I am not super stoked about the lash tab location, but really that is my only issue. The pocket is easy to access and extra roomy. I like being able to keep my rescue rope close at hand under the front and my tether with carabiner in the side pocket. I keep a yellow climbing cam in the front pocket for anchoring my boat too and this is very handy for other situations. I looked closely at several other popular designs and asked a lot of questions before going with this one and have been pleased with my choice. I'm 5'9"/160 and the M/L works great in just a rash guard shirt or with my drytop. Photo is of my buddy Nathan at Kanawha Falls, he's wearing the Green Jacket that saved my butt that day.

Best PFD
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
If your looking for the safest and most comfortable PFD look no further. The GreenJacket is a staple of mine for all rafting trips. It has super convenient storage pockets to stash rescue gear and a small camera. The jacket also doesn't get in the way of paddling.

Great jacket
- Familiarity:

The Astral Green Jacket is in my opinion the best PFD on the market. With ample storage space for my entire pin kit, a small throw bag, and rappel gear, all while maintaining a low profile that doesn't hinder mobility, I only use the Green Jacket for professional photo kayaking, guiding, and expedition paddling.

Not the best when it comes to floatation. The Koatat Ronin Pro & Kokatat Maximus size L/XL has 17 lbs 5 oz. The Astral Green Jacket size L/XL is 16.4 lbs. So opinions aside Kokatat is the best when it comes to floatation unless you don't want to float higher.

Bought the best!
- Familiarity:
- I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
After a rough float with a sawdust and down vintage PFD, I upgraded and went straight to the top of the line. I bought the LE9 version and I'd love to have pictures but I'm patiently awaiting arrival. Having used the Zen Class V on the Colorado, I was well aware of the safety features on all class V PFDs, but so many of my guide friends rave about the green jackets superior design and layout. I'm looking forward to great support and function, and a YUGE zippered pocket up front since I'm usually better prepared than most. Will update when I get the glorious LE9!

I absolutely love this PFD. If you are in need for a solid, reliable and comfortable rescue PFD this is where your search ends! I initially purchased this item before a swift water rescue course where I really had a great opportunity to test all aspects of this PFD, it exceeded my expectations and after many many floats since then I know this PFD is going to last me a very long time. The front storage pocket is extremely useful and easily accessible. No complaints!

Best Rescue PFD on the market
I use this vest for work when guiding whitewater rafts. The vest is comfortable, loaded with great features (integrated rescue belt, large front storage pocket with organizers, mini throw rope storage, side pockets, felt lined hand warmer area, etc.), and it looks good too. I recommend learning how to use the rescue features from trained professionals. If you are in need of a full featured rescue PFD then you can't go wrong with this one.

I bought this for my daughter and she loves it. She tried multiple PFD's before deciding that this one was the best fit. She says its very comfortable and loves the pockets. She is 5'6" 130 LBS and I purchased the S/M for her.

BEST PFD out there
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
I use this PFD all the time for creeking, instruction, and playboating. It's super comfortable and has all the features necessary for a good rescue PFD. The Green Jacket is very durable & holds up for year under the abuse of sun & being shoved in the back of trucks. It also features a great front pocket for organizing all your snacks, sunscreen, earplugs, river knife, pin kit, and whatever else you might wish you had space for!

Great Jacket
Bought this after a close call on a class 5 stretch of river in Colorado. Since then having the peace of mind when it comes to safety included with the jackets features, there is no other way to go. Used this jacket in a pin situation only about a week after receiving it. It performed flawlessly. Would recomend. Super comfortable, good looking, and extremely functional.

Alternative knife mounting
I like to wear my river knife on the left side of the rescue belt. The knife is much lower profile here making getting back into a raft much easier. It's a real low drag spot. Surprisingly easy to access with both hands.

Absolute Bomber PFD
I bought mine at the end of May just gearing up for the season ahead and oh boy, Astral did not disappoint. It's ready to go out of the box, no nonsense there. Comes with a user guide and some stickers as well. The "Pull Over" donning and doffing is much less of a hassle than many (just as myself) expect at first. Once it's on, you completely forget that little bit of extra effort it took putting it on until it's time to take it off again. It fits perfectly thanks to the three adjustment buckles on each side, never too loose - and never too tight. The quick release rescue loop provides a sturdy attachment point for hauling boats or performing a "live bait" rescue, and the peace of mind being able to get out of it in a pinch. Another added safety feature that astral nailed wis the Spectra safety loop

Safe...
I purchased this Greenjacket for a female acquaintance. I own three others, all lime green in men's. I have come to trust Astral products. My primary reason for this trust is safety. This Type V pfd provides it. All systems are 'go' with this product. One and only desire is what every woman and paddler cries out for, and that is 'closet space'. Though better than adequate, I wish there was more room for storing gear in and on the vest. Otherwise, great product and no better investment can be made in protecting one's life on the water. Notable, I also own several Astral Dyneema Throw Bags.

Benchmark for rescue vests
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
I've used this vest in a swift water rescue class and elsewhere on the river - it performs exceeding well. The over-the-head entry does take a bit of getting used to but the multiple straps snug down well and the fit is perfect. I attached a river knife to the shoulder, not on the ill-placed tab on the very front of the jacket. It is much easier to climb back on or in a raft that way. The big pocket in the front can hold a lot of various stuff and behind it you can put a small throw bag. The safety tether was easy to release with either hand too. I'm 5'9" at 175lbs - the M/L was a great fit even over a dry suit and polypropylene underneath.
