XC Bib Short

We're sure we're not the only ones to do this, but we love Assos road bibs so much, we often run them under our mountain bike baggies. We've grown so accustomed to the fit and comfort that nothing else quite cuts it. If it's more of an XC day than a trail day, we'll forgo the baggy shorts, but we fear that crashing will trash our beloved bibs so we're grateful that Assos now offers the XC Bib Short giving us an excellent chamois and cut with the added durability to stand up to off-road use. It tested the shorts with BMC MTB Racing Team, helping to refine them into the tough, lightweight, and highly breathable shorts here.

First up, the short utilizes ripstop fabric on the side panels of the legs in the form of high abrasion resistant and breathable dyneRope material. It's a close-fitted woven fabric consisting of a black polyethylene weaving. Claimed to be the world’s strongest fiber, its 15-times stronger than steel while remaining extremely lightweight and able to wick moisture. Elsewhere, it uses its Type.429 Titanio fabric that’s engineered with 4-way stretch so they easily move with you.

Assos also took the opportunity to create a mountain bike-specific insert. Its positioned a tad more forward than on its road bibs and tuned for a slightly more upright mountain bike position and the increased body English required on steep switchback climbs. It uses a thick 10mm memory foam over an elastic insert to soak up the bumps over rough trails while reducing friction for increased comfort. The short benefits from Assos' goldenGate technology that interrupts the sewing in the area between the legs creating three-dimensional freedom of movement. Fewer seams mean reduced friction and more comfort. One of our favorite features of the s7 chamois is its perforated foam middle layer resulting in weight savings and increased breathability.

The shorts also utilize its aeroPatterningFenomeno1 design that consists of a patent-pending single seam that sits on the rear of the legs. This allows the main fabric of the short to wrap around your thighs giving more support and compression. For the uppers, Y7 frame carrier bibTech uses straps cut from wider elastic that sit with less pressure on your shoulders with each strap getting its bibStabilizer giving the straps sufficient support and prevent twisting while also serving as a holder for sunglasses.

A few last bits of tech that make the short a winner in off-road circles is its anti-bacterial odorControl treatment keeping the shorts feeling fresh and the mountain bike-specific leg grippers offering the ideal amount of compression without excessive pressure.

My go-to bibs!

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer
Size Bought:
M
Height:
5' 8"
Weight:
170

The bands are quite stretchy, which means that the jewels aren't crushed when I'm outside of the riding position. The foam pad works great . I've worn this on very bumpy gravel and MTB rides and have no complaints. These are the only bibs I will buy from now on! I typically fit S bibs (Specialized, Pearl Izumi) since my waist is 30 but the leg openings are a bit smaller than most and the M fits me perfectly.

Not up to Assos's standard

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I've owned Assos Equipe S7 bibs and the previous generation bibs too, and absolutely loved them. Unfortunately, I did not love these bibs. They seem to run quite small in weird ways. I wear a medium in Equipe bibs and Assos jerseys + skinsuits and tried a medium for these shorts too. They're very tight and uncomfortable. I'm worried I will break the seam at the top when taking them off. Length is right, but the tightness of fabric is just too mcuh. The seam that runs down the legs between the black and the gray sections creates a pressure point that irritates on most rides. I don't think sizing up would help, as I'm already using a medium when I'm "supposed" to be in a small according to Assos size charts. I think it would create weird proportions if I were to try an L. I wanted to like these and liked the idea of a more abrasion resistant material for MTB. Instead, I'm just going to ride my Equipe bibs on MTB 5'8" / 140lbs

High qual

Familiarity:

Best bib I've set my hands on. To be fair, I'm coming from Pearl Izumi Attack bibs, so it really feels like ditching your Kia for a Mercedes or something. The fit and finish on these are top notch - worth the $$ if you can afford it - consider that mountain bibs can take a beating so it might worth paying a little more for a tougher bib like this anyway. I'm 6'2.5" and the Assos site recommended Medium, which I don't think would have fit. I went w/ Large and it fits really well.

If you like Assos, you'll love these!

After going through the wringer with cycling kit over the years nothing ever fit me as well as my Assos road kit. I frequently rode my s7 and now s9's for XC rides and endurance events because none of my mtb stuff or road kit from other brands does it for me like Assos. For those already initiated with the brand, these Torpedo gray XC bib shorts are more in line with the s7 gen but with the upgraded side panels for trail-worthy durability and even more minimalist straps, which fall between the s7 and s9's in my opinion. The unboxing was similar to the older s7 too. Compared to other Assos kit, these bibs were a bit snug though the hip flexors getting started and I assume that was a bit of the side fabrics which pull and stretch differently than the rest but after a few miles these shorts disappeared and were near perfect for me for the next two hours of race pace singlestrack efforts. To upgrade these I give the s9 insert a slight edge and I'd prefer all black, but the gray's not bad. For all Assos bibs I wish they were an inch longer down the leg which could be accomplished if the brand doubled the leg gripper, but this request does not take away from their 5-star rating. I know we've all got our own sizing and fit preferences but for me being 5'11" and 150 lbs, the mediums are spot on. Most brands I fall somewhere between small and medium but the Assos mediums are perfection everywhere. Aspects Assos gets right and IMO sets the bar for all other brands : Straps - wide and snug with consistent tension, they last forever Chamois - perfect density for short and very long rides Compression - nice everywhere, through the legs, shoulders, across hips, and up front where it really matters! No "room for error" Durability - I've owned s7 T.Equipes for years, each pair with hundreds of rides and thousands of miles. Sill performing like new, albeit a bit sun-faded. I've bailed very hard descending on rocky single track in my Assos s9 road kit and I am astonished that they were not damaged while I had to visit the ER for stitches from what happened behind the fabrics. My prediction is that these XC shorts will hold up to the harshest of challenges and last a long, long time. Some balk at the price but from my experience, Assos bibs are WORTH EVERY PENNY. Trying to justify saving a few bucks over the 5+ year lifespan of a pair of best quality kit instead of replacing some cheaper, lower performing stuff every couple of years is something I've decided I don't have the time or bandwidth for anymore.
