When only the best will suffice.
The phrase "don't compromise" has long been the mantra employed by Assos for its technical cycling apparel. Sure, it sounds like a sound principle to adhere to, but it takes a detailed inspection of the product at hand to really see what the Swiss designers mean by this. Take the new LL.pompaDour_s5 Women's Tights, for example, as they were constructed to specifically fit, support, and protect the female body in cold winter-weather riding conditions. And while many apparel manufactures claim that their products possess these same characteristics, no one but Assos is as obsessed with refining its items until absolute perfection is achieved.
The platform for the LL.pompaDour comes from Assos' LL.uma that it replaces, but the pattern has been revised to mimic the LL.716's twinDeck-foiling technology. What this means is that instead of using a bulky and inflexible membrane for the thigh and knee panels, Assos employed a specific double-layer construction — Assos' RXQ fleece-backed material provides next-to-skin comfort and light insulation, with a layer of its proprietary Stratagon ultralight membrane keeping you shielded from the cold, wind, and light rain. Together, this dual-layer system provides total freedom of knee movement, while still providing exceptional comfort and protection from the elements.
The LL.pompaDour was constructed using four panels, six different textiles, and 10 components. For the majority of the paneling, Assos' RXplus fabric was used. This is a heavier-weight, refined version of the former Roubaix fabric, meaning that it provides both an increase in abrasion resistance and insulation. The real beauty of this material is that while it effectively shields and insulates the body, it still delivers that legendary, silky Assos touch to the skin. The second brand new fabric to emerge from the ASSOS Textile Lab is known as stratagonUltra. This ultrathin material was strategically placed due to its elastic properties, as its flexible composition works to move with you in the saddle and block wind and cold air from reaching sensitive skin underneath.
Combining what Assos calls its Advanced Ergonomic Pattern Design (AEPD) racing cut with its cycling-specific body-mapping pattern design, the LL.pompaDour also benefits from the most thought-out design process in the business. Assos is the first to tell you that high-end materials mean nothing if the cut isn't right. That's why it's spent a significant amount of time on two points of study — how the body is shaped, and how it changes throughout the movements of cycling. Accordingly, the AEPD cut is made for the shape of cycling, not standing (just a little something to remember when you try it on). With the LL.pompaDour, the cut greets the contours of your body and adds a slight compression to aid in muscle recovery and stabilization.
For the uppers, Assos built the LL.pompaDour using its patented ABC-M bib closure mechanism. This was first introduced on the Lady T.FI 13 shorts, and it's essentially an adjustable, female-specific "monobib" construction. This closure provides three different closing positions ranging from tight to loose. Assos recommends the tight position for more support while racing, with the loose setting providing a bit more flexibility and movement in the torso region. Adjustments are made using the new carbon buckle at the front. Assos rounded out the system using its durable and lightweight ultrasonic welding technology for attaching the buckle to the fabric.
The final LL.pompaDour touch-point advancement is the chamois. The tights use the legendary Assos custom elastic interface insert, high-density memory foam s5 chamois. With years of field analysis, Assos has refined the Lady s_5 insert to the point of perfection. The female-specific Lady s_5 insert is more breathable that previous versions and is specifically designed for the female anatomy. Overall, Assos' incorporation of proprietary technology has created a chamois that's painstakingly designed to provide the best in anatomical fit and comfort.
The Assos LL.pompaDour_s5 Tights - Women's are available in five sizes from X-Small to X-Large and in the color Black Volkanga.

- Q & A
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
- Fit: True to size
I'm typically an XS in bibs and exercise leggings, and these are true to size. They are tight, just the way a pair of cycling tights are supposed to be. They keep me warm in the fall and winter for those occasional cycling days in between ski days. I'd estimate that they're good for 30s to 40s, but I'm not going for a ride outside if it's colder! The only con on these is the weird strap around your neck. I know that this is "cool" new styling for women's cycling bibs, but it takes some getting used to and feels a bit like a loose noose. Not my favorite thing.
