Shoulder-season champion.

When summer fades to autumn, and your riding days get shorter and cooler, let the Assos iJ.tiBuruJacket_evo7 transport you back to the warmth of early summer rides. The tiBuru is one of our go-to staples for fall and spring warmth, but depending on where you live, it can transcend those two seasons and slide through mild winter months while keeping you comfortable in the mid to low 40s. Thanks to the combination of Assos RX and RXQ fabric you'll find that this jacket lands at the perfect balance between a thermal jersey and a winter jacket, with fleecy lining that keeps you warm but enough breathability to keep you from overheating when you ascend twisting canyons and steep city roads alike.

This iteration of the iJ.tiBuruJacket is designed to be a bit more subtle than previous generations, and while it comes with bright color options like voltYellow and reOrange, its branding is much more subtle, so you can comfortably blend in to a crowd in this piece. Its fit is slim, and features strategic paneling of two different fleecy-fabrics to provide the right amount of insulation for winter rides. Assos' RX is a thicker fleecy fabric that insulates your core and upper arms, where your body meets the most wind, trapping heat within its matrix of fibers, while wicking away perspiration. The back panel is constructed with RXQ fabric, which still offers fleecy-softness, but is lighter weight to allow for elevated moisture transfer and heat dissipation, so you don't overheat or end up spinning home in a clammy chill.

The iJ.tiBuruJacket_evo7 fits snug, but does allow enough extra space to layer underneath when needed. Because the fabric is naturally soft it's comfortable enough to be worn as a thick thermal jersey when the temperature isn't too chilly, but a light jersey or baselayer can add heat retention when the mercury really drops. Just as we've come to expect from Assos, the iJ.tiBuruJacket fits precisely with a smooth aerodynamic cut that doesn't flap in the wind. It features three back pockets with an integrated Assos rear stabilizer panel that enables the jacket to click onto your body and keep the pockets positioned properly, even when fully loaded. One zippered pocket offers a secure stashing spot for cards, keys, or other essentials that you want to make sure stay safe on the ride.

Excellent lightweight option

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The Tiburu jacket is perfect for an early summer morning ride, or a post work spin in autumn. I would recommend breaking it out between about 60 and 50 degrees. Materials are absolutely top notch, and fit is Assos standard, which is slightly smaller than most brands, but a little bigger than Castelli. Feel free to reach out to me at jdraper@backcountry.com if you have any questions!

Recommended, but use a base layer

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: XL
  • Height: 6'0"
  • Weight: 190lbs

I've been wearing this jacket in temps ranging from low 40's to low 60's (F). Initially I used a merino base layer for the cool temps and it did not perform well. The description above asserts that the jacket has a 'fleecy layer' and while that is technically accurate it overstates the amount of insulation in the garment, because in practical terms there is none. If you wear this jacket against your skin in 40 degree weather then it will get cold and that cold will be transmitted to your skin. If you sweat then it will be transmitted even more directly. I prefer the Castelli seamless base layers because the insulating layer is mostly air, which is easily displaced if you unzip your jacket during a climb, but anything that creates some space between your body and the cold air will work.

The fit on the bike is excellent, with the usual Assos patterning and stretchy panels to provide superb comfort in the riding position. Fitment is snug but not tight, so it feels great on the bike.

I fit a 42R jacket, with a long torso and short arms (wingspan is 5' 9"). The XL fits me very well.

Some people like to cosplay as their favorite pro cyclist or team, but I much prefer plain black, especially for winter gear. So I think Assos color options are great. YMMV
