You've never had pants like these before.

Literally translating to 'storm nut,' the Assos hL.sturmNuss Pants are truly for the psychopathic cyclist that'll ride through anything. Waterproof, windproof, and on a completely different level of breathable, the hL.sturmNuss Pants are a summary of everything that we love about Assos — impeccable, innovative quality that you simply can't find anywhere else.

Like any new Assos product, the hL.sturmNuss pants are a complete flip on design conformity, and they owe their very existence to Assos' new Triton fabric. Straight out of the Assos Textile Laboratory (how big is the Assos building anyways?), the new material is as close to a sentient being as we've ever experienced. Why do we say this? Because the pants adapt to temperature. Let us explain. Triton was developed by Assos to provide the best ratio of impermeability-to-vapor permeability ever in a cycling pant. Basically, this ratio is integral to eliminating fussy humidity and over-sweating in rain wear. The fabric features a flexible membrane barrier that lets less body heat escape when the internal temperature is low, and when the internal temperature starts to rise, the pores of the membrane open to let the vapor escape. This means that the protected membrane is constantly regulating your temperature in order to provide a consistent level of warmth. All the while, the pants are keeping external moisture sources out and keeping sweat from building up, or remaining, on the skin. Dry from the inside out. Finally.

We're sure that you're as impressed as we are, but of course, Assos didn't stop there. The hL.sturmNuss features different weights of the Triton fabric throughout the pants. On the center panels, where your legs are most affected by the elements, Assos placed the heavier, Triton 2019 material. At the side panels, where flexibility and elasticity are more crucial, Assos positioned the lighter and malleable Triton 0017. Together, you don't have to sacrifice comfort and movement for element protection.

For even further protection, Assos placed rear-positioned ankle zippers that run from the hems to about midway up the calves. Under the zip-closure, you'll find Assos' signature ankle grippers. At the waist, the hL.sturmNuss makes use of what Assos calls its half-short specific waistband. As the name suggests, this closure systems fits, looks, and feels the same as your favorite pair of Assos shorts — minus the chamois. Assos has also taken the precaution to tape the critical seams of the pants. Now, seepage has been completely thwarted.

As impressive as the Assos fabric lineup and features are, the true Assos signature is in its precision fit. Utilizing what Assos calls its Advanced Ergonomic Pattern Design (AEPD) racing cut, the hL.sturmNuss benefits from the most thought out designing process in the business. Assos is the first to tell you that high-end materials mean nothing if the cut is bad. That's why it's spent a maddening amount of time on two points of study -- how the body is shaped, and how it changes throughout the movements of cycling. Accordingly, the AEPD cut is made for the shape of cycling, not standing (just a little something to remember when you try it on). Altogether, the characteristics of AEPD make the pants 'click' into place for the ultimate in cycling fit.

The Assos hL.sturmNuss Pants are available in the color Black Volkanga and in six sizes from Small to TIR.

    Rain Pants that Fit

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

Unlike other rain pants I've owned by Gore and Showers Pass, these are clearly designed for hard riding. There is little excess material to flap around, and there is a complete lack of the ‘whiffing’ sound of my thighs rubbing against each other and the up against my seat like I get on more 'conventional' rain pants.

I've worn these for 3-4 hours in moderate to heavy rain, and while I can't say I remained bone dry, I also can't recall even one second of discomfort.

The silicon grippers at the waist and ankles keep water out, and when paired with the Assos SturmPrinz jacket, I can finally say that I've found a perfect rain suit.

Do yourself a favor. Stop buying cheaper rain clothing and spring for Assos. Nothing will keep you dry after four or five hours in a downpour, not even Assos, but the level of comfort in cold driving rain that I've experienced while wearing this stuff is beyond belief.

    Highly recommended.

    Stay dry through the worst

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These are really fantastic pants; I've never gotten wet while wearing them. Well, not on my legs, at least.

And they seem pretty good as far as not getting too hot, as well. The only time I've felt sweat on my legs, under them, was when it was just shy of 60F and sunny (it had rained earlier, and I hadn't had a chance to take them off yet).

They also crunch down very small; I haven't stuffed them into a jacket pocket, but I imagine I could.

I've even used them, a couple of times, as a windbreaker for my legs on 40-ish degree days.
