Mille GT Half Short

Like with their bibbed brethren, Mille GT Half Short brings us a redesigned insert and graphics in the same quality fit we love from Assos. Like its predecessor, the Mille GT is the workhorse short from Assos, built for riding, training, and racing.

The Mille S7 EVO features the same 8mm thick memory foam with a 3D waffle upper, which increases airflow. The all-new kraterCooler system furthers ventilation through the short, with small perforations in the front of the insert to draw air through the foam. Like the previous S7 insert, the Mille S7 EVO also has Assos’ patented goldenGate construction, which interrupts the stitching along both of the chamois' side panels, allowing a greater freedom of movement in this sensitive, rotational area.

The shorts are cut to accommodate a regular, athletic build and given that this is Assos you won't be surprised to learn that the shape is engineered so they fit best when you're in the saddle. While we can't speak for every cyclist, not all of us at Competitive are built like the rail-thin, razor-elbowed climbers of the pro peloton. The mille fit means that the shorts conform to our body with a gently compressive, second-skin fit instead of squeezing and pinching our legs into bulging shapes that range from unflattering to uncomfortable.

The leg and waistbands continue this theme of fitting your body instead of forcing your body to fit the shorts. The legs terminate in low-volume superFlat grip bands to keep the cuffs securely in place, and the waistband uses gentle compression and a wide footprint to ensure coverage without adding pressure and restriction to your stomach.

Nice material but loose at the waist

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I always wear a Large or XL bike short and with a 34-35in waist should fit a Large in these according to Assos. The Large is usable, but the waistband is is loose enough that the shorts tend to ride down. Big disappointment.

Over priced for little chamois

I thought these would be an upgrade to the PEARL iZUMi Quest Short which are $35 as of writing as where these were $85 (normally $150). I would say the chamois offers as much padding and comfort as my year old Quest shorts. So there definitely isn't a gain there. Rapha's core shorts offer much more comfort and padding. Another weird thing about the chamois is there is a break in the sewing in the middle. So the front and back are sewn in only. I didn't see how this made a difference but it was weird and you may need to be careful when laundering these that you could lose a sock or have another garment catch the foam padding itself. At the top of the short there is a neat bit of different material that reminds me of how the top of maternity pants have that soft stretch. It's a neat concept here but there is no grip up top so it ends up sliding around. One thing not apparent from the pictures is the logo is like a rubber/silicone disk. You can't feel it when riding which is good. Just a bit goofy given how just about every other short has no raised bits. The Mille GT C2 are well liked across many review sites and the pad is 2mm denser but Assos' website does not explain if different types of foam are used or what. So if you want Assos and to spend maybe $150 on shorts try those. One nice thing is they dry fast.

my sizing experience

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I have given up on finding an Assos Shirt that fits (too narrow for me), but thoroughly enjoy the 3 pair of their bibs I have, all in a size L. For reference, Im 42"chest, 33" waist, around 185 lbs with athletic build. At just over 5'-9", they are not too long for my somewhat short legs the way other brands sometimes are. I bought these to replace the other Assos shorts I owned until my golden retriever chewed a bullseye hole a very undesirable spot...haunting the person who was drafting me, before I realized the damage. Oddly, my experience has been that the Assos "shorts" are best worn a size smaller than their bibs. For this latest pair, I initially went with the Large (similar) to the bibs I wear, but found the chamois to move around too much...like some of the other reviewers have reported. Thus, I passed them along to the (haunted) guy I ride with. I replaced with the Medium (same size as the damaged ones) and the fit is much better. I don't like these as much as the bibs, but do fit them into the regular rotation, and they are great for indoor training. YMMV, but my finding is to go down a size with Assos shorts.

They are usable and not too bad

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I have never been able to use shorts on the bike. Most slip down after a short time on the bike and need constant reworking. These stay nice and form fitting around my butt which means the chamois stays pretty much in place. I've had about 20 rides with them so far and am considering wearing them for a cross country trip. The chamois is a little thin at 8mm but not too bad. I use a brooks saddle so don't need a lot of padding but I like a nice tight fit with the shorts which these provide. The waistband does it's own thing, sometimes staying up and feeling good and sometimes rolling down and feeling uncomfortable but overall these are usable. I ride hands free sometimes and have perfected the ability of pulling the waistband up so there you go. Yes I would buy another pair though I would probably by a size smaller next time.
