    fuguHelm Cap

When it comes to winter riding apparel, aside from the feet, the head is the most neglected part of the body. When you think about it, this is an absurd notion. After all, whether you're on the hoods or in the drops, your head takes the brunt of oncoming wind. So, if you have the slightest care for your ears or well-being, you need to slip on the Assos fuguHelm Cap.

The fuguHelm cap benefits from a similar combination of materials as Assos' iJ.Habu jacket. It has a stretchy, windproof front to shield you from cold winds, yet the back portion breathes easily and provides the perfect level of insulation to keep you warm and comfortable. Assos gave the cap a short bill that can be flipped up or down, and two short elastic loops over each ear that allow you to tuck in the temples of your glasses.

The Assos fuguHelm Cap is available in the colors Black Volkanga and White Panther and in sizes 0, I, and II. Assos places the cap in its climaRange 4.4 category, or in non-Assos-speak, extreme winter. The fuguHelm is designed for sub-freezing conditions, so be aware that any temperatures over 32 degrees Fahrenheit will start to feel a bit toasty.

    The Perfect Cold Weather Hat

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

This is my cold weather must have cap and I have used it for several years riding in Norcal and now central Oregon. I have a large head, 7.5+ and size II fits perfectly. The hat fits close to the scalp and down on the forehead, covers my ears completely, and closes out any wind trying to come in from the edges. The outside ear loops keep glasses in place so one does not have to put glasses inside the cap, it also works with the arms inside, just a little more cold air intrudes. The material blocks the wind and breathes without any added bulk and my helmet fits easily over the cap. Combined with a helmet cover and various neck gators my head comfort is never an issue. I loaned it to my wife, then bought her a size II due to hair and ponytail. The cap is notched up in the back for a pony tail and works great. The bill is short and does not offer much sun protection but I run it low on my forehead and it covers my wrap glasses from horn to horn with maybe 1/2 inch outfront of center, enough to tilt the head and block some low sun. For comparison I use the original Rapha Winter Cap in warmer weather. The Rapha cap is bulkier, and does not offer as much wind protection, and has a larger bill.

    Fantastic

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Height: 6'3"
    • Weight: 209lbs

I've tried all manner of options under my helmet for the 0° - 10°C range with varied success. This thing is pricey, like most Assos kit, but as usual they don't disappoint. Somehow this manages to be warm without being sweaty, keeps the ears comfy, has a brim that keeps the low angle sun at bay, fits nicely under your helmet. Fantastic.

    Exactly as advertized

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have been using this cap for > 3 seasons. I use it for temps below 40 degrees F generally. It is much warmer than any other skullcap or helmet liner I have used. It breathes so well in fact that my head is still dry even when riding if unexpectedly warm temps arrive suddenly. It is way more comfortable, (and warmer) than adding a balaclava, at least for me. The brim is just long enough to keep early AM low winter sun at bay and fold up to help evaporate moisture a little faster. Is it worth the extra money compared to others? If your earlobes don't freeze, you can hear oncoming traffic despite the ear flaps on your current hat, your fingers and toes aren't cold, and you have no complaints after a winter ride at 25 degrees you don't need to spend the extra for this hat. Otherwise, worth every penny!
