For mountaineering and alpine travel, the right Black Diamond headlamp should give you high output, quick brightness adjustment, dependable night-vision options, and a secure way to wear or mount the battery pack. When the route starts in the dark or runs long past sunset, those details matter more than fluff. You want enough light to pick out terrain clearly, a simple way to fine-tune brightness as conditions change, and beam settings that help preserve vision when you’re checking gear, maps, or camp tasks.
A strong example is a setup with 700 lumens, which gives you the punch needed for skin tracks, rocky approaches, and technical movement where depth and detail count. Just as important, brightness should be easy to adjust on the fly. A feature like PowerTap technology helps you react fast instead of fumbling with controls in gloves or cold hands.
Color lighting also earns its place in the alpine. Red, blue, and green modes give you more options for different night-vision needs, which is handy when you’re moving between camp chores, transitions, and route finding. Finally, pay attention to how the power source carries. A removable battery pack with alternate mounting options can make a big difference when you’re layering up, wearing a helmet, or dialing comfort for a long push.
The Black Diamond Icon 700 Headlamp is built around the kind of details that make long, dark starts feel a lot more manageable. Its dimmable white light lets you tailor output to the moment. Cranking brightness can help when you need more visibility, while dimming down can be useful in tighter spaces or when you want a lower-output setting.
Brightness Memory is one of those features that sounds small until you use it. Instead of resetting every time you power up, the lamp remembers your previous brightness level. That means less fiddling and a faster return to the light level you already know works for your pace and conditions.
The lighting options go beyond white beam output. With red, blue, and green lighting, you get more flexibility for different tasks after dark. Having multiple color modes gives you more flexibility for different tasks after dark.
Then there’s the carry system. The removable battery pack, plus a longer cord and waist band, opens up versatile mounting possibilities. If you’d rather not wear the pack on the back of your head, you’ve got options. That adaptability gives you more options for how you wear or mount the battery pack.
Start with the kind of mission you actually do. If your days regularly begin before dawn, end after dark, or stretch across multiple days, prioritize a headlamp with serious output and adaptable carry options. Big mountain terrain asks a lot from your light, so it helps to choose a model that can handle route finding, camp use, and movement on uneven ground without feeling one-note.
It also helps to think about convenience, not just raw power. A lamp that remembers your last brightness setting can save time when you’re moving early and want fewer steps between stopped and rolling. And if comfort is a priority, a design with alternate battery-pack placement can be easier to integrate into a full alpine kit.
The short version: choose a headlamp that balances visibility, control, night-use versatility, and fit adaptability. In the mountains, the best feature set is the one that keeps your system simple when everything else gets complicated.

Whether we are hiking, camping, skiing, snowboarding, or climbing we make sure to add the Black Diamond Spot 400-R Headlamp to our preparation checklist. The digital lock function prevents the battery from draining while we go about our business in the daylight so that we can rest easy knowing we will have up to 450 lumens to work with as the twilight hours descend.
I've been using BD headlamps for near twenty years now. They have only gotten better; lighter, brighter, more efficient. I was so psyched for this rechargeable and lightweight model. I have gone through a village's share of batteries before this moment. I have a habit of using dim mode or red mode to sustain battery life. So for me one full charge lasts weeks. Here is the rub. With new tech gains, BD has overlooked the actual build. Less than six months of use, the hinge no longer stays fixed in upright position. The headlamp body, though not heavy, flops downward for every time I tip my chin down. This totally sucks for all downhill activity. Like much of my beloved gear, my BD headlamp now sports a piece of climbing tape. Dear BD designers, please fix this analog glitch. Thanks.
Very bright, good settings, long battery. Sometimes I wish I bought the battery one.
I teach a backcountry travel / skiing class. Seems I always have a student forget their headlamp. I picked this up as spare - just in case. I been using the STORM light for years - it's been my go-to morning run light for years. But I am quite impressed with this Spot. Not quite as bright as the STORM, but it has all the feature I need - rechargeable, long battery life, AND the all-important red light for reading in the tent! Good investment.
I'm a big fan. It's a little smaller and lighter than the old one I replaced. Red light mode is great. Definitely checks all my boxes.
In general it was okay. But a piece of plastic broke from it in the first year. The silicone cap for the power button lasted only about 2 years, and it stopped charging after ~26 months.
This is my 3rd BD headlamp and I believe they are the best out there. The Spot 400-R is very light and comfortable to wear, provides a super bright light when needed and it can be dimmed for longer battery life. A solid purchase indeed!
Great settings, easy to use, and bright! This was definitely an upgrade from my old headlamp.
I've been using BD headlamps for 20 years, and the line keeps improving every year. Grabbed the Spot 400-R to keep at my cabin so I don't have to remember to bring the one I use for the backcountry every time I head north. Bonus: it's rechargeable, so I don't need to remember batteries, either.
Has multiple settings for brightness, plus your red lamp. Holds charge for a number of hours. Great headlamp
Awesome light, wondering about black diamond design choices. For all of your headbands, one of the plastic buckle is facing the inside, from everyone who I’ve seen use it. It is an uncomfortable piece of technology. Therefore, was wondering what was the thought behind this. As somebody has used your products over a dozen years, wanted to ask about this design choice. Sincerely a customer who just replaced his faithful headlamp.
This lights functionality is great. Buttons work well and all settings perform as expected. The color of the product I purchased was listed as bordeaux and the accompanying pictures showed a dark scarlet or marroon case and band. The color of the bordeaux case and band in real life is much closer to milk chocolate. There is very little red.
It makes light. It's rechargeable. It's not trying to do anything else. Lives inside my pack all the time, comes out for walking the dog at night.
This is a great all-around little headlamp for most backcountry purposes. I've used it since it first came out on backpacking trips. I enjoy the light modes and separate button to switch between lights. The door on the charging outlet is a little cheap looking/feeling, and I really wish BD would update it to USB-C like everything else has now. Really tired of needing different cables/connectors for everything. Other than that it's been good.
So far so good! Lights super bright and love the red light function. Have not had a chance to test the longevity of the battery, time will tell.
Powerful light, simple button set up with many functions, quick charging and slick look.
Great headlamp but not charging via usbc in 2025 is extremely frustrating and makes it hard to recommend. Literally the only thing I own that charges with micro usb.
I needed a new headlamp for my upcoming through hike on the Arizona Trail. I think it is very important to have long battery life and low lumen output options. On through hikes it is usually days between charging opportunities, in some cases over a week. Most of the use for the light will be managing gear in the dark or using the facili-trees; which do not usually require brightness. Even if a night hike is needed, 200 lumens is more than enough. The functionality of the two buttons for most settings is very intuitive and the addition of the side tap for instant full bright is a nice touch (😀). Having a digital lock rather than a physical lock is a must! My high output headlamp for night skiing is a physical lock which I have bumped on while getting snacks or transition to DH. I will be replacing that headlamp with a digital lock style. I don't care too much for the red light option, but on a trail with shelters, like the AT, it is a must. Nothing wakes up the sleeping hiker next to you than a white light! It's also helpful in designated camping areas where folks may be packed tight.
The Spot 400 rechargeable has all the features, is super bright, but is still compact and lightweight. Get one!
This is a lightweight and powerful rechargeable light that is hands free and comfortable. Definitely a great choice for my retirement!
use it for hikes, muktipitch night climb and camping site. I really like it so far.
wanted lighter rechargeable nheadlamp for my wife's travel kit.
Headlamp is comfortable. Illumination perfect for my evening walks.
I've had several generations of Spot headlamps. This one is well engineered, comfortable, easy to use, and the rechargeability is nice.
Works well, bright, easy to use, easy to charge, lightweight.
Great headlamp. Does what it should and then some.
I use it in the woods to lightly illuminate my trail. With the dimmable red light beam I can walk in safely, without spooking the animals, and still see clearly. The white light beam, when needed, is marvelous. Don N.
Love the rechargeable and all the many features! Thanks BD
Great light, holds charge well and charges quickly. It’s super bright.
I love this headlamp as it is bright, easy to use and dependable. No need to troll any more reviews, buy this one.
Really good light. Easy to use. As you say in Sweden - Rekommenderar
This little light is a powerhouse! I love it, comfortable and easy to use. Great output of light as well.
The headlamp worked great and the red light was a life saver at the hot springs.
Used this lamp twice. Still getting familiar with stepping through the different modes. Being able to work with both hands free is great. Lamp is light weight and compact so it does not get in your way while using.
What an awesome lamp, I love the three different modes and charging capability. If you’re looking for a well priced all around all in one headlamp that’s rechargeable then this is the one for you
This light is perfect for all outings, it is light weight enough for trail/hiking adventures and bright enough for XC Skiing, biking and other adventures.
Headlamp does its job well. It is small and the battery lasts longer than I will ever need as of now. Would recommend to anyone.
It’s a shame it doesn’t add the RGB bit it performs well and the battery life is decent.
I've had this headlamp going on 2 years. and got one for my wife. Has all the features you want.
This headlamp has worked out really well. I love that it is rechargable so I don't have to keep buying batteries. It took me a minute to figure out all the different features, in particular how to lock the headlamp, but now I have the hang of it and can use it easily.
Love the new easy-to-distinguish top buttons and the smooth light angle adjustment. My older Spot 350 has more flush buttons that are hard to differentiate, especially while wearing gloves and the "clicky" angle adjustment was a bit annoying.
This headlamp is fantastic and I've had quite a few. I just graduated from a non-rechargeable 400 spot which I thought was great to this rechargeable version. I have taken it on a seven day backpack and had plenty of power left over. Features that I love are if I were to bring a power bank, I could charge it up without bringing an extra set of batteries. Effective elastic strap. Spotlight or close light and I actually do use the red light so I don't destroy my night vision or wake everyone else up in the tent. Easy access buttons and a super bright tap on the side. I would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone. Thanks, black diamond for another quality product!
This is a very handy light. I bought it as a replacement for one my Wife broke. This one is really bright. She loves it!
Loving my new headlamp, got tired of buying really cheap one and got myself the good stuff!
Wow..this thing is super bright! I really like the ability to ramp up/down the brightness & the ease of changing between your lights depending on the situation. My hubby appreciated the 'red' light when I was using it in the tent. Also liking the ability for a 'lock out' so that it doesn't accidentally get turned on in my backpack. Solid headlamp thus far.
light and works really well, it's a little too easy to accidentally press the button on the side that changes from dimmest to brightest mode but other than that its perfect!
I wear this lamp every night for weeks. The controls are intuitive and easy. Charging is great and the battery life is long. It's a very simple lamp that doesn't bugger up your pocket during the day and hangs lightly around your next at night. Recommend to all my coworkers and also to friends that spend time outside at night.
I replaced my existing headlamp (it was pretty cheap) with this one. The existing one only had 1 brightness and 1 color light so it was pretty blinding at night backpacking. Tested the Spot 400 at home and it was so much better! I could dim the lighting to adjust to the brightness of the room and use the red light at night. Also love that it's rechargeable so I don't always worry about swapping batteries in the middle of the trail!
Very lightweight and is extremely bright for those hikes that start before dawn the rechargeable version is lighter than the disposable batteries
Solid headlamps for dark walks or trail runs with the dogs. Haven’t had a chance to use them for camping but given how bright, lightweight and with a small profile; they will be a welcome addition to my gear.
Comfortable headband, super bright but what I like the best is the rechargeable feature! NO MORE BATTERIES!
I love it so much. It is so bright. I love the color purple.
I ordered this to replace a Black Diamond headlamp I have been using since 2018 and have not been disappointed. I like the updated slim styling. The instructions were easy to follow and it has worked flawlessly so far. I am a mechanic and wear it for hours at a time, often stuffing it in whatever pocket or crevice is available. My only concern is the durability/longevity of the built-in rechargeable battery. My old headlamp could use rechargeables or standard disposable batteries interchangeably. I have no doubt though that Black Diamond will stand behind the product if any issues related to the battery arise. Would recommend and buy again in a heartbeat.
Use this for Nordic skiing at night plenty bright, great battery life and it recharges quickly.
Great, reliable headlamp! Big upgrade from my Petzl lamp!
Really am pleased with the updates to an already excellent design. Immediately can see and feel the difference with a softer, slightly more rounded, lighter, and better ergonomic design. The materials and textures are perfect for look and feel, and weather proofing. Lastly I love the intuitive, simpler button redesign. A+++
Look, you can spend more on a headlamp, but wasting money is dumb. This thing has every feature you want and every feature you need, while also being easy to use. Want to make it brighter or dimmer? Hold one button. Want to change from focused light to wide light to red light? Press one button. Want to lock the buttons so it doesn’t turn on in your pack? Hold both buttons. Need max brightness quickly? Tap the side. Want to turn on the red light at night so that you don’t kill your night vision? Hold the second button. You can do strobe, or SOS (let’s hope you never need it). It’s water resistant. It’s rechargeable. It has batter indicator lights. It has brightness memory when you turn it on and off so you don’t have to change it every time. It’s literally the best headlamp you can buy, and it’s half the price of several inferior headlamps. Don’t be a dummy; but this lamp.
Nice and lightweight; the highlighter yellow color is just as visible as I hoped it would be (for when you're rooting around for your headlamp in a dark backpack...). Settings were a little convoluted to figure out -- had to get on YouTube to understand them all. Haven't taken it out in the wild yet to really test it out, but so far so good.
I love all the settings this headlamp has, and haven’t even had to use them all yet. It’s super convenient because it’s rechargeable, so this is definitely my go-to now.
Just received the Spot 400-R. I have only had my headlamp for a week but did have an opportunity to use it one time and it works great. I will be using it for the upcoming hunting season and expect it will be my new go to light. Thank you for putting out a great product!
Lighter, with all the features: lock, red light, flash mode, water resistance (better than advertised), and a super bright option. I like that the controls went back to the 1st gen layout. 🤌
Easy to use, bright, lightweight and comfortable. Different modes, such as spot, spot & flood, flood, and red-light, are all useful. If I had one suggestion it would be for a slightly brighter red light. It's useful in a tent, but not quite bight enough to navigate on foot through a pitch-black forest. It would also be nice to see the mini USB port switched out to USB-C, which seems to be the way everything is going and would mean needing to carry less cables. Other than that, I have no complaints. It's just a great headlamp!
I like it a lot, only used it for running. It's great that you can recharge it. The strap is not super confrontable for running but it's good. I really like the tap to set max power fast. A 5 star headlamp.
Purchased the Spot 400-R for trail running. This is my first rechargeable headlamp & I love it! The battery compartment is a point of failure on regular headlamps & rechargeable-only eliminates this issue.
This thing is bright and dim and flashes and turns red and I love it. Yaay for rechargeable headlamps!
Used these for years, replacing them with this purchase. Love the red mode
I haven't had the chance to take it out on the trail yet, but was perfect when I lost power two days after receiving it. I love that there are so many settings available!
It's probably got a few more features than I'll use, but the dimming feature is pretty cool. Spot light is bright and area light works well. Lots of power for the compact size, perfect fit. Time will tell how the rechargeable battery holds up, but I prefer that to changing batteries.
Lamp works great for hiking, enough light power and battery has been lasting long enough.
Lives up to the reviews/ratings. Easy use, plenty of brightness, quick charge
I've got a couple of headlamps. One that is extremely light for backpacking, one that is almost too strong, and now this one. This has quickly become my go-to, first grab light, and I plan on having it with me on pretty much all my future trips.
Small and bright and rechargeable what else could you ask for?
I have many BD headlamps, but all the alkaline models. This USB rechargeable is so much easier! Love it.
The perfect headlamp for the backcountry. Lightweight and durable with a reliable charge
I absolutely love this light, so much I bought a second for backup. The brightness level being adjustable makes the battery last an exceptionally long time. Very comfortable, and being able to lock it is helpful to avoid finding it on and spent in my pack. The biggest sale point for me was after I accidentally sent it through the top-loader washing machine and fully dried it too, and it still works flawlessly! Very bright, comfortable, and durable!
Awesome love it so far! Love that it’s rechargeable.
As someone that hates fooling with any light just before a run, this sucker really is a gem. No hassling with directions or batteries, it's pretty intuitive. Performance wise, it's lightweight without any bounce when adjusted accordingly. The angle adjustability of the light really is a thing of beauty for runners. I also like keeping it a little bit greener in the long "run"using only a rechargeable battery. I would venture to say it's very versatile, but really shines when you're looking to move fast and light.
Very bright and have only had a quick test but very happy!
After doing alot of research I decided to purchase this for my husband’s birthday. He was so impressed by this headlamp. I have purchased other ones and he was always disappointed. Not this time! I will recommend this headlamp to anyone looking for a great product!
Very bright. Seems to hold a charge well. Great not having to worry about batteries. Easy to operate. More expensive that similar battery operated model but worth it. Highly recommend for night time activities whether hiking, spelunking, running, or working around the home.
After using both the Spot 400 and the Spot 400-R extensively, I can confidently say that there is nothing I would change about them. Both have operated flawlessly and are exceptionally feature rich.
This is the best light Blsack Diamond has ever sent to market. BD products are always well built but if I'm being totally honest the lights weren't necessarily easy to use in terms of accessing thier full functionality. This one is the exception. Streamlined, simplistic, well designed and bomb proof. Love it.
What more could you ask for in a running light? I have two and keep one near the door for taking the puppy outside.
Love the dimming function. It’s better than any headlamp I’ve ever owned that takes disposable batteries
I finally found a great headlamp. Light weight, comfortable, USB rechargeable, good batt life, more than enough features
While I haven't had a chance to use this at the crag or at camp, it's been great for late night walks with the dog. I just keep the red light on most of the time, but I can easily move to a bright white light if I need to.
The new Spot is the latest in a line of great headlamps by BD. Love the compact, water resistant, rechargeable features. Dimming feature helps save battery live. Great power, works well on the trail and anywhere else.
I’ve used these headlamps for several years and they’ve always put out an impeccable product. I use mine for work in the underground utilities industry. Charge time at 3 hours sucks when the lamp only lasts for about 1.5 hours. Micro USB was a terrible choice as we all know they always fail. It’s not if but when. Should have used a USB C and maybe a larger battery for longevity. It’s great for the short period of time it stays on though. Was so excited for the new product line too.
So I purchased it for my day to day used. Tried it when it arrived home and everything was fine. The next time I took it to camping, the bigger light seems won't turn on! I only have the red light and the smaller one. I changed my petzl one that I have for ish 6 years for the BD one and I didn't even bring it outside, it's already broken... usb-C need to be an update too.
Outstanding product 3 modes…regular.. high intensity and red mode..,rechargeable and weighing a light few ounces.. love it
Great, quality product. Intuitive controls and I like the spotlight and floodlight modes. The buttons could be bigger and easier to hit.
Rechargeable is the way to go… light and bright and awesome! Molly in customer support was fantastic!
A great improvement over previous generations. Rechargeable feature is great, no more guilt of using throwaway batteries. The Spot 400R is significantly lighter, thinner, and more comfortable than the Storm 500R in my opinion and I would recommend it over the Storm 500R unless you need the extra charging capacity of the 500R. I found them to be similar in light output which is incredible. For the price, these lights are a great value. The features are easy to use, I found the tap feature unnecessary but I haven’t played with it enough to know if I will end up liking it in the future.
Great headlamp. Having a rechargeable battery is great for staying out a little later and I can easily charge it when I get home.
This headlamp is killer. Super light, bright, and rechargeable which saves on batteries. I have several BD headlamps and they never dissapoint!
This is a great headlamp! I really needed a lamp that had a blinking application because I walk on a busy road...AND in the dark. This is perfect!
Love my new headlight for dog walking in winter in dark Summer Nights. No more batteries!
easy to operate and recharge, plenty bright for walking dog, throwing and spotting the ball. We bought two and are happy with them.
Very clear bright light, and rechargeable. The battery life indicator on the side is very helpful and the digital lock feature keeps it off in my bag.
My son lives in Maine where the mornings & evenings grow dark early. This headlamp is invaluable for him to walk his dogs.
I am very impressed with the battery life on the rechargeable battery! I went on a 7 day back country trip, the headlamp still had a charge and I never had to put batteries in it. I am all for the rechargeable battery option!!
I've had quite a few headlamps over the years. I hesitated on this one only becausse of the rechargeable battery. BUT, this is the best headlamp I've had. It lasts a long time and charges quickly. Has quite a few features that all work together well. It is fairly small, but powerful.
Excelente producto la recomiendo por eso le doy 5 estrellas
As a professional naturalist guide (for over 25 years), it's important to be prepared and well-equipped on all of the trips I lead and personal trips too. I'm excited about using this on the trail as my headlamp I carry on all of my day hiking trips and especially on backpacking trips. It is lightweight, compact and has a powerful beam that is dimmable. Having a red light option and the ability to lock the light in the off position were selling points for me as well. I've been looking for a high quality headlamp and I believe this one fits the bill!
Great light. Love having the rechargeable version!
I’ve owned the previous 4 models too and this one I like the best. They’ve fixed the previous usb port that now is perfect. It’s smaller and sleeker. It’s still waterproof. And now… not only brighter, but also green and blue light! Love it.
This headlamp is perfect! Super light , adjustable and bright. It has multiple settings, and I love that it is rechargeable.
Lightweight but powerful. All the light options are a bonus. Excellent quality.
Best headlamp I've owned so far - it's compact and light but still has many features and is very bright. It's also comfortable and I love that it is rechargeable. I saw tons of reviews with rating it as one of the best headlamps on the market currently, and I definitely do not regret this purchase!
