Trim the fat, but not the warmth.

The mornings and nights during your week-long climbing trip to Vedauwoo can be chilly when you aren't sending it. Throw on the Arc'teryx Men's Nuclei Hooded Insulated Jacket to maximize your warmth without being weighed down. The Nuclei is stuffed with Coreloft insulation, which is made with highly crimped multi-denier siliconized polyester yarn, making it lightweight, breathable, compressible and moisture resistant. You won't feel restricted when you wear the jacket thanks to its trim fit, gusseted underarms, and articulated cut. The Nuclei packs down to the size of a water bottle, so it takes up very little pack space and can be easily clipped to a harness.

    Tremendous Jacket And LIGHT

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: XL

I've been looking for quite some time for a lightweight, synthetic jacket to wear as an outer layer when moving during Winter hikes (which is not really what this jacket is intended for I should point out). I specifically wanted an all synthetic coat, with decent fill weight AND with pockets and no breathable side mesh, polartec, etc. Proved harder to find than I was expecting.

When the jacket first arrived my first impression was this is overpriced nonsense. It is VERY LIGHT. Almost impossibly light. The fabric seems like if you look at it funny it would tear. Was pretty sure I'd be returning it. Then I started wearing it. It is surprisingly warm (and I should point out here I get cold VERY easy. You know when you're out on a nice day, everyone is in t-shirts and there's that one guy in a zipped up fleece? That's me). I took it for an easy paced walk in the 30's and some breeze wearing only a t-shirt and I was sweating in it 10 minutes in. It remained warm even wet (and it really doesn't get that wet - it breathes very well). I've since hiked in it in light snow, temps down to 20 about 20 deg and always been warm. It cuts the breeze surprisingly well to (I'm talking 10-20mph; Haven't been out in worse yet).

Long story short, I think this jacket is awesome. I still can't believe how warm it is relative to the weight. Gone right to the top of my "must have" hiking gear list for all seasons.

    Great Jacket in the Alpine

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

This is a great jacket. This and an R1 are my go to layers for temperatures between 30 and 40 degrees. The Nuclei really cuts down the wind and keeps in body heat. It is well fitted and the generous seat keeps it tucked in place under a harness. While not waterproof, it will keep you dry even if you're caught out in some substantial drizzle. I wouldn't reccomend using it in a full on storm though.

This jacket packs really well into it's own pocket, I'm not sure why they went with a separate stuff sack that fits awkwardly in the chest pocket. I untied the included sack and just stuff it into it's own pocket. I wish they had sewn a loop and used a double sided zipper in the pocket though. Also, the hood fits really well over a helmet. Which means it is a little bit on the big side, and there is no draw string to pull it tight. All in all a great jacket.

    Great Jacket in the Alpine

    Super light and comfortable.

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: Large

Really cool jacket. Super light and warm. Packs really small. The sleeves tend to swallow your hands a little otherwise I would have gave it a 5 star rating. I'm sure this is partly due to the minimalist design not using any Velcro straps on the sleeves.
